The year is 1995 and the world is set to see a brand new race series.

The series is loosely based on the FIA WEC. This series will combine the thrill of coffee, oil and petrol with an advanced R&D mechanic to create a season of intense in your face racing.

[size=150]R&D System[/size]

The R&D system works by giving you R&D points which can be spent accordingly. You obtain these from your final race position. This system allows cars that are at the back of the pack to catch up with the rest of field creating much closer and much more competitive racing. These R&D points are worked out by (Production Units *50). If decide to invest in developing your chassis or engine you use work out the difference in points from the previous iteration of the chassis/engine to the developed chassis/engine (e.g. (275PU – 250PU)*50 =1250R&D) The R&D costs in the rules are what you have to spend to develop the first vehicle in each class. At the end of each season you will earn extra R&D which can be either put towards a new chassis/engine or developing the existing chassis into a better one. There will be a 4 day window after each race in which you can spend your R&D points and make any setup changes. I will also include bonus R&D points for the best fuel economy and the fastest lap time.

There will be an overall team championship and a championship for each class. Point system TBD as I need a general idea of the number of people entering.

[size=150]How the Racing works[/size]

The races are 24hr long endurance races so certain factors are taking into consideration when working out the results on my fancy calculator that I made on excel. The first of which is lap time your vehicle runs on the track, as it is an endurance race there needs to be pit stops so I generalise that everyone has a 100lt tank of fuel on board and I work out how many laps are needed before a pit stop is needed using the distance and the fuel consumption. I then add 1minute 40seconds to the time for the pit stop. Through my calculations i work out how many full laps you complete (including pit stops) before the 24hr time limit.

I will be back home just in time to create an entry. Are you doing any sort of tire wear calculations as well or only fuel?

only fuel. There are too many variables with tyre choice, size and quality to calculate the wear.

This looks like a good way to introduce myself to Automation championships. Count me in!

R&D is a nice idea, but for less confusion, why not just take out the conversion rate and just express winnings in terms of PU alone? Saves having to do one mental calculation… every single time!

Edit: when working out fuel efficiency, I would recommend using the engine’s specific fuel consumption rather than the car’s economy stat, as a race car will be operating at wide-open throttle most of the time. Something like this:

e = efficiency in g/kWh
p = power in kW
l = load factor (complete guesstimate of 80%)
d = density of petrol (710-770g/l)

24efp/1000d = total fuel burn in litres

As much as i would love to have a complex system of working out the engine specific fuel consumption it is at the moment just not possible. I’ve set this tournament up so it properly starts after my exams finish and as i am working with excel and as i am just not that proficient with excel ill leave it to the current system. If this tournament gets enough traction and i hold a 1996 AWEC then ill attempt to create a system that works.

I used the R&D point conversion as it made it feel like it’s a larger difference. I will leave the R&D points on there i’ll just put the PU equivalent in brackets

I don’t know if this is of any help, but Der Bayer’s BROBOT calculates fuel consumption dynamically during the race. I’d be perfectly happy to have people test out whatever fuel-consumption calculations they want on my machine and compare it to the BRC 1945 results - although I don’t know what units Der Bayer uses. (Kilograms seems most likely.) (Edit: Kilograms confirmed.)

Given that this file was made in an older version of Automation, the best thing might be to strip the data straight from the Packbat-Engines-Models.lua file; the format is something like this:

so, at full throttle and 6300 RPM, you can read off 119.5 kW and 480.9 g/kWh to calculate 57.48 kg/hr fuel consumption.

(For the record, the actual fuel used during Green Hell testing was about 29 kg/hr, assuming Der Bayer presents the numbers in kilos. If the units are liters, then naturally fuel consumption is less.)

Preview-Edit: I completely understand not using this kind of calcuation for Round 1 of the tournament. If we can figure a good system for the future, though - something which approximates well the kind of results Der Bayer is getting for much less effort - I would be thrilled to see it used.

Edit #2: Using the training videos, I estimate 25.0 kg/hr on Automation Test Track, 26.2 kg/hr on Brands Hatch Indy, 25.3 kg/hr on the Airfield Track, and 28.6 kg/hr on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. For comparison, at full throttle the car should be using 32.2 kg/hr at 4000 RPM (80 kph in second gear) and 60.8 kg/hr at the 6500 RPM redline.

Yeah this round of the tournament is basically a test run for the format of the tournament and to see what can be improved for future iterations of this tournament. Creating a system that allows me to work out a more accurate fuel consumption during the race is a future goal for this series.

I wish. Given the size restrictions and the nature of the not espace body, I can either choose an undersized AWD or an FR format. The original had a mid-mounted turbo 3.5L v10 (oh man) pushing out 800bhp and carbon ceramic brakes. I definitely will fall short of that power given the 400PU limit, and I won’t be able to match its acceleration off the line with a front-engined setup, so I’ll just make mine as fast as I can :stuck_out_tongue:

Okay, after some fiddling, here is my lol-mobile, a remake of the Renault Espace F1 which, coincidentally, made an appearance in 1995 (hence the inspiration):


Sadly, my version is nowhere near as powerful as the 800bhp 3.5L V10 in the original. However, the original was an MR with a replica body shoved over an F1 chassis. This one is rather different, having had to resort to AWD to match most of the performance benchmarks. But AWD also makes for some rather quick times around the track… will probably be going to the pits an awful lot more than most of the other competitors though :laughing:
