I think it’d be cool to see a spec sheet/ spreadsheet type thing of all the entries at the deadline so we could kinda “forecast/debate” who will win.
Mine might look fast but according to some of these numbers posted, DONT BET ON ME!!

I’d love to see that too! I sometimes do stuff like that for other competitions, but we can’t see all the .car’s on this one so I’ve only been able to download a few to check out. I’ll say that there is a massive breadth of performance so far, which is interesting. Also from the few I’ve managed to export some very very different handling characteristics. From cars (like mine), that are very fun/leary and sideways, to others the are much more understeery that I would have thought, and a couple that are much more neutral, but somehow twitchy at the same time.
Judging from last time, It’s likely that the host will be reviewing the designs on stream before racing with them; while he does this, the specs should be visible for studying, even if he doesn’t look over them himself. That’s probably the best opportunity to study them. (:
The first one, Hakone, is exclusively a long series of switchbacks down a mountain; Cars that handle well will have a strong advantage over power focused cars, and cars that tend to wheelspin or oversteer at low speeds might be almost painful to watch.
The much more traditional Hirochi Short Course won’t be as one-sided, as there are places to really use power, but it is still a handling-focused course. Power alone can’t win there, but with something else going for it too, a car can still shine.
Yet handling is next to irrelevant at the unique Neon City course, because all the turns are very wide and sharply banked- so sharply banked, in fact, that centrifugal force ends up pushing the car against the floor and sharply increasing the friction it’s fighting against (might even bottom out cars with low, soft suspensions or lots of overhang) Power will be the main focus there, though transmission design & management will also play an important factor in ensuring the most out of said power.
Overall, it will certainly be interesting to see how these cars interact with these tracks. I can’t wait!
I can honestly say that after driving my car in Beam for the first time a few hours ago, tuned to good Automation stats…it’s under powered quite possibly…it likes to understeer…but will take a corner…
lets see how far that gets me lol.
edit: just read the extra part…wow, this is gonna be pretty dope! Im not on call tomorrow so I’ll be tuning in.
don’t you worry, I’m already ahead of you on that one
So Hakone for me, based on futzing around on the Automation short course, is either going to be a strong point or my total undoing. Should be interesting.
A few things to add. While Hakone is indeed about low-speed handling. I personally think acceleration and espcially braking performance is more important here. There are a number of cars so far that I’ve seen, that don’t have ABS, but have some powerful brakes. So they lock up very easily, and regardless of cornering performance may struggle around here. (assuming @TheTom uses realistic abs, not arcade abs in beam)
Hirochi is a good balance yeah power is still important here, and imo its one of the most forgiving tracks in the game. So it’ll be less harsh on the power cars I think, but all cars do need to have some level of grip to get round quickly.
As for Neon City, I actually found this to be the hardest for my car, a power car. It doesnt’ really require great traditional handling characteristics, but a car had to cope with changes in slope fairly well (mine being rear-engined does not), and stability is key (again not a strong point of my car either). So imo its more a test of stability and power, than outright power.
Minmax Turbo IMP
AWD, 1998 cc, turbo charged, I6, EFI, Dual Cam, Limited slip, all around disk breaks, $25000. Imp
Is that some negative camber in the rear I see?…see you at the race buddy.
Those are some great observations mate, nice analysis!
The one thing I would disagree with you on, though, is the acceleration on Hakone; it is a downhill course, which is advantageous to cars with less power. Additionally, how fast a car can accelerate isn’t as important as how consistently it can get use said acceleration, which depends on how composed it stays through the turns. A car can have more power than any other, but if it can’t hold onto its grip in the turns, it’ll find itself unable to do anything with said power once it reaches the straights. Composure in the corners and stability on exit, I bet, will have a bigger impact on the overall time than plain acceleration.
And as a separate note about the cars themselves, one last thing we haven’t considered is how easy a car is to drive; after all, the host doesn’t have days to spend learning the intricacies of every single car before each race. He is a good driver, and will definitely try his best with each car; But with the time he has, he may end up being able to get more out of a car that’s easy to push to its limits, than one that might technically be faster but is harder to learn.
Ah! When I said acceleration I was meaning acceleration out of the corners. Which is a mix of power, traction and cornering grip. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Personally for me it’ll be interesting to see how easy or difficult my car is to drive… Personally I think its easy but that’s because I prefer cars with a large rear weight bias. And would rather have a bit of snap oversteer potential, than even mild understeer under braking.

To keep everyone up to date, here I will list all the contenders and all the disqualified cars for the challenge. They are listed here in chronologic order, aka. the first one that was submitted is listed first. If you don’t see your second car, it’s because only one submission per player is allowed and the first submission counts.

Wait, I’m confused. How is my car a race car? It looks nothing like the example pic and follows the rules to a T. If the power to weight is too high then why have the rules as they are?
Not very nice of you to add rules on the fly, race engine my ass
hahahah
Since he never said realism would be judged (or even looked at), I have to agree that this binning is rediculous. He never said they had to be realistic to this class, just that they had to be worth less than $25,000, so Most of those cars haven’t violated any stated rule. He can’t just bin cars that he thinks are unrealistic when most of the contestants aren’t even trying to be realistic in the first place!
It is a cool challenge overall, but this is a serious problem. Most of these cars should be allowed to compete.
Either write all the rules down, or accept what you’ve been sent if it’s not breaking any of the written rules.
Cam profile was not mentioned anywhere.
What’s race-y about it anyway?
If I remember correctly, it had like 200Nm at 3000rpm, that’s more than some engines make peak.
How do you define race engine?
5 valves per cylinder?
Wonder why VAG didn’t think so and put their 1.8 20v engine in both turbo and n/a form in almost all of their cars, from the Polo to the Passat and A6.
shitfest galore, begin.
I, for one, actually agree with the host’s decision to exclude some of the cars before the tournament has even begun… And there are many cars on the bin list that have too much power for their weight, so it makes perfect sense. In fact, I most likely would have struggled to challenge for the top spots if they hadn’t been rejected - but at least I am lucky to have made the entry list.
