2003 Mazda Mx5 NBFL

So this February after 23 years the childhood dream came true, and I got my first car, hell, what a first car: a 2003 Mx5 NBFL 1.6L. Always had a soft spot for the NB(FL) thanks to NFS nostalgia, but it sure was a challenge to convince the mom it was safe and reliable enough.

She had just 96,080 km on the clock, and was sold by a dealership, which is obliged to give a year warranty by Belgian law. It did come at a pretty hefty price tag of 7k€ (Yeah, Mx5s are beloved here),…good bye all the savings of having a job in the summer last 5 years. But now it’s more 96,800 ish on the clock.

As soon as I got her back “home”, I got rid of the aftermarket front “grill” which I’d rather call car braces than anything else.
Speaking of “home”, through the week she sleeps at my grandmother’s empty garage, as I don’t have any space to park her at my dorm, during the weekends though, she sleeps under a car cover in a spot near my parents’ house:

She’s far from a minter, the bodywork has plenty of scratches and marks, even hail dents on the trunk, the rims are curbed and even have some rust, but the chassis seems solid and structural rust free. Their “free maintenance” was a tad…errrr though, they didnt let the car run for a bit after draining the radiator and refilling it, resulting in this after the first drive:

Pretty much shat myself thinking she was burning coolant or leaking, but refilled the coolant with distilled water, and since then hasnt dropped.
The right front brake semi-seized up after a spirited drive with my dad during my absence, he had freed it up afterwards, but it kept seizing when brakes were applied, so on I went, using only E-brake to slow down on a 1 hour trip to the dealership where I bought the lil Mx5 to get the calliper changed under warranty. That was a nervewrecking adventure, I can tell you. But! Butbut but but, they had a black hardtop for sale, which I quite happily picked up to be able to use her next winter.

Sure does change the way the car looks from the side-back, and wheee, no blind spots with the hardtop, in contrary to the soft top.

Still on the to-do list after having worked and earnt some cash in July:

  • Simple 2-DIN radio
  • Summer rims (black??) + tyres (for some reason she got sold with winter tyres)
  • Hard Dog Rollbar to have some rollover protection just in case.

Cheers for reading!

Black rims are overrated, IMHO. Stick with something classy, not rice.

I would go silver or something in that nature usually not a fan of black myself, the problem is that the interior, hardtop and soft top all are black, so sticking to that grey/black theme might pay off with classy 15" rims like Enkei RPF1s or 6ULs.
EDIT: Input is very welcome though, still pondering heavily whether to go silver or black and what rim.

Black rims do fit silver colored cars very well if you ask me, I wouldn’t use the term ‘rice’ on just that.

First things first, congratulations, and it does look great.

Now, a radio is a must, obviously, as are the summer tyres.
I’m such a fan of the standard Mazda wheels that it would be sad to see them go. Personally, I hate black wheels on most things, and I’m sure a Miata would be one of them. Keep it classy.

Also, why bother with the rollbar? It will end up spoling the looks and if you want rollover protection, maybe what about not rolling it over :stuck_out_tongue:

I would go with the black double hoop design:

Subtle, and without the flame sticker, the least obnoxious, and hopefully classy. You never know if someone runs a redlight and T-bones you at 70 kph, the odds are slim, but the risk is high, my neck being folded like paper and head scraping over asphalt aren’t appealing thoughts.

Oh, double hoop is acceptable, for some reason I thought you’d go full trackday, bro.

I don’t see how it would be effective if, say, I were driving it, but it doesn’t detract from the looks at least (if it’s in black).

Yeah, the challenge I’m hosting right now would be more for like 4 years in the future :joy:
This mx5 will be my Daily Driver for the coming 3 years (I know, I’ll regret having a thing as DD that hardly even has a trunk to speak of), and might serve to wet my feet in the trackday bro’ world when I can afford to break parts.

EDIT: Yeah, I’m 6’1 myself, my head will stick out too, but it’s better than nothing

I say if you’re doing anything aftermarket you should steer towards this.

Forget trackday, go for off-road rally.

Wow jelly, would pay 7k euro for something with that low mileage! Can’t find an NB with less than 200000km here unless it’s been modded to the gills.

Ohgod :joy: To be fair, these things are badass as f*ck (well, still adorable, but badass). Daily driving one of these would be hilarious but Belgium’s like one big town, not many places to offroad (without getting arrested).

Well, I might be wrong, but Australia is one damn big place, resulting in higher mileages by nature. A one hour drive is pretty far to my European standards, but I don’t know how it is in urbanised Australia.

But yeah, she comes from a Dealership that specialises in importing (low mileage) Mx5’s from Germany, don’t know how they find them, magic probably, or they rolled back the clock when importing, but I’d rather not think of that being the case  Time will tell, previous owner was a female, so the mileage could be legit. #sexism
