2008 Economic Crisismobile Challenge (Cancelled off)

2008

The year is 2008, The 2008 Financial Crisis is coming into a close, and your car company is thinking of exporting the cheapest stuff for the cheapest families out there, this is basically a gateway to modern shitbox engineering. Most of this will take place in my eastern-European nation that keeps getting invaded, Titanicette.

GROUND RULES

  • No carbon fibre, or any lightweight material for the body and chassis.

  • Any layout for the engine is fine.

  • No more than 6 cylinders.

  • ONLY Cast Iron items.

  • No race items, these are shitboxes, not racecars.

  • Redline of around 5,000 RPM.

  • Any drivetrain is allowed.

  • Drum brakes only.

  • Any tires are allowed.

  • No Aero.

  • Basic Interior, anything is allowed for the Entertainment.

  • Any steering is allowed.

  • Traction aids ONLY for more expensive models.

  • No safety.

  • No limit on price, just keep it cheap.

If there are ignored items, they are free to your imagination.

Cast iron head would be ancient by 2008. 25 years prior to this, a shitbox Nissan Micra had an all aluminium engine.

I think you only meant cast-iron internals.

That means a standard steel chassis and bodywork, although the former may be galvanized and the latter treated, for rustproofing purposes. Anything more advanced (and lighter) than those would be overkill, though.

By 2008, this would also have been very archaic - solid front discs at minimum would have been preferable.

That would be taking things too far - I’d suggest regular radials, medium compound at most.

Again, this isn’t the (late) 1940s anymore - even the bottom of the new car market would have had some emphasis on safety by 2008.

Why limit the redline specifically? It feels so horribly arbitrary. You know what kind of engine the current ruleset would allow? A 400 hp, E85 powered, 4.0 turbo I6. And you know what kind of engins it would not allow? A 65 hp, normal 95 RON powered, 1.0 N/A I3. Guess which one should go into a 2008 shitbox?

My thoughts exactly. The soft limit of 5k RPM should just be abolished. However, if the client really wants a cheap car at the bottom end of the market, the cylinder count should be capped at four, with a maximum displacement of 2000 cc.

Or rather, no functional aero fixtures (wings, spoilers, lips) or undertrays. Body moldings disguised as aero fixtures could be acceptable, though.

It would be better if the client could accept anything up to a standard interior and entertainment system, but nothing fancier than that.

I see you definitely have lot of questions, so we shall see if it’s possible to give good answer.

It turns out it very much IS possible to get good answer

We shall start with Zastava Skala, which started it’s production in 1971

560px-Zastava_Yugo_311_1116cc

In case you heard of Zastava Koral or Yugo, this is it’s older, bigger (hatchback version of Fiat 128 and therefore equal to first gen VW Golf) and cheaper cousin.

Was it avaiable in 2008? Funny you ask, it was. That was it’s last year of production tbf but still.
All-cast engine? As is case with some Micra mentioned by someone else in here, this has aluminium head so no, it wasn’t entirely cast-iron affair.
Does it have redline of 5k? No, it develops it’s maximum power at 6k
Drum brakes only? No, has discs on front.
No safety? Well…yes and no. Note that cars do advance in safety beyond having airbags. Stuff that also counts in this regard would be crumple zones and seatbelts…latter of which definitely is present in this car

Otherwise seatbelt buckles between front seats wouldn’t make much sense.
Headrests are also visible on at least 2 out of three pictures I posted about this car…and they are also part of safety package

In case you decide Skala is too old, may I direct you towards Tata Nano?
I mean, it’s even cheaper AND a modern design
Tata_-Nano-_Kolkata_2011-09-15_5184

We shall disregard the fact this fella is absolutely tiny compared to Zastava and therefore much smaller 2 cylinder engine is sufficient to propel it.
Said engine features both block and head made out of aluminium, so it isn’t all cast
Redline at 5k? Again, no. It develops power beyond 5k.
Drum brakes? Yes, it has those all-around. I shall remind that this is very small vehicle.
No safety? As was case with Zastava, I shall try to find seatbelts.

Also note this also has headrests.

So, we had concluded that two very cheap cars avaiable in 2008 might happen to be touch bit more advanced than what your rules would picture.
Note that Zastava cost like 3.5k euros in said final year of production.

Go into domain of what would be usually very cheap cars (Zastava Florida, Dacia Logan, Lada Kalina) and note those would cost twice as much as Skala. Also note they might be even further from your ruleset

New for 2008, the LMCC Naturi.

Passes the 0-60 test with flying colours. It’s new stick shift gearbox provides a positive shift in a reliable transmission and all round independent suspension allows it to corner and cover bumps much smoother than older systems. Has a sun roof that allows you to enjoy a warm summers day.

With new rust protection and all a new chassis it’s durability combined with good fuel economy provides low costs over the entire long life of the car. Only has 3 types of bulb easily available online, at dealers and in many shops. Complies with all emissions and, thanks to a new pressed steel monocoque chassis, safety legislation*. Comes as standard with a heater, fuel gauge and winding windows, dealers will be happy to assist in the installation of an entertainment system of your choice.

Price: A mere 6550 AMU

*Within markets this document is published within.

Note: I included a sun roof because the Fiat 500 used a similar one partially to save on the amount of steel used in production.
