3d artist and auto technician

Im an auto technician here in the US (ford and im working on BMW certs next year) i had a few questions, first off though, im a 3d artist and have been modeling since Half-Life modding came big back around 2000, and would love to contribute if you need the extra help. I just picked up the game and i have to say that im incredibly impressed with it, have done an astounding job with the engine build so i hope you take all this as positive criticism if i give any criticism at all  and this probably is not the place to post this, but im sure it can be moved if necessary.

  1. Opposing piston engines such as an opposing 4 engine, rotary engines.

  2. Torsion bar suspension, twin I-beam suspension, and leaf spring.

  3. Cooling systems, oil fluid type, oiling design such as dry sump, side oiler, etc.

Also in order to better design the cosmetics of a car wouldnt it be more beneficial to be able to manipulate points on a car as opposed to just a broad section of it? i think it would allow more flexible design.

Heyya! Glad you’re enjoying it so far. Here some quick answers.

Boxer 4 and 6 are coming. Rotaries: sigh youtube.com/watch?v=P4S6L-kMev0

Already in, currently not planned, already in.

Not enough gameplay value to be implemented, has been considered thoroughly.

Awesome sauce.

I must have missed that, i only remembered seeing 4 link and McPherson, what about Rheomagnetic?

Yea i guess i could see that, thank you for the extremely speedy reply by the way!

I am not really sure whether modifying the car body by manipulating it vertex by vertex (it that what you meant, or did I get you wrong?) would produce nice results quickly.

No i was not talking about manipulating by vertex but having a more customizable design it would actually lessen the load to develop because you would need less car bodies, for example you could just have a 2 door, 3 door, 4 door, etc. and allow the player to greater customize sections.

For example look at the picture of the awesome 68 mustang fastback im working on right now. If you were to have each green dot moveable, and it effects the blue lines of vertex’s its more customizable without adding a hellatious amount to the modeling while still allowing for more player customization. Im not poking, just trying to be helpfull  I think it could help with calculating aerodynamics as well because from the facing of the front of the vehicle to the rear (simplistically) you could just see the angle of one point to another in order to roughly calculate aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Neat ^ They may be too far along to go that route at this point though… If i’m not mistaken the car designer would be pretty core coded at this point.

How do you like the EVO btw… I almost went that route but couldn’t get over the boxer rumble…

Yeah, I suspect something slightly more detailed could be possible, but you always run into a lot of problems with keeping everything smooth and un-kinked, as well as keeping panel lines as straight as possible. I’ll make a tutorial video for the skinning process one day, then everyone can see what is involved in even getting it to work as much as it does already

Regarding helping out with 3d work. Having seen that Mustang model I’m happy that you’d be able to do good quality stuff, but right now we already don’t have enough budget to pay our 2nd artist (kubboz) to do as many bodies as we’d like to be able to.

Oh I didnt want pay, was just to help out on spare time

Ahh, that would be OK. We’d just need to get you to sign a thing saying it’s OK to use them in a commercial product.

You might want to have a look at this guide (not entirely complete) of how car bodies work - wiki.automationgame.com/index.php/Car_Bodies

yea i love her, i got her brand new with 16 miles on it for $44k, and probably $15k in parts later she just sits in the garage now next to the 68 coupe that im slowly rebuilding… (by slowly i mean over 5 years), i take her off road every now and then she runs like a champ.

You can model in Maya, but you’d have to put it into a copy of max to do the final bits and pieces of material assignment and such.
