A legacy built, Part 1 (submissions open)

To build a legacy, you must make a legend.

Now days designers fail to understand what makes a design, so legendary that it becomes part of a companies legacy. This challenge is more of a practice, one to see who is the most capable to carry a design from its introduction to where it stands right now. Of course designs change as times change but the legendary cars, carry what made them special over. As the part one, we may start with the more iconic platform, the coupes, Trying to make a car from 60s, 80s and 2000s. The focus is to carry the design you start with over to later decades, not just by the looks but what it stands for. Of course each decade would have it’s own challenges to design but it should be a fun one. Let’s start with some inspirations!

Get inspired

  • Ford Mustang from 60s, 80s and 00s

  • Mercedes Benz SL series

  • Nissan/Datsun Z series

Rules

  • Must choose one of the following markets as it takes a part in the points given.

Sports
Light sports
Pony
Muscle
GT
Super

  • Convertible versions for these markets if eligible.
  • Make sure that you set the Model and family as (ALB)-Forum name.

  • Cars that have a note/ad that explains a bit about their design philosophy or just a sales pitch can earn up to 2 points.

  • Cars and engines must be built in the 3 different decades with the technology available to those decades.
    Model 1: 1969 and before.
    Model 2: 1975 (For bodies)-1989
    Model 3: 1985 (for bodies)-2009

  • Cars must be realistic to a degree, you may get creative and make race variants, but make sure to make a street version first. In other words no race parts, unless you have a street version made (which would be used for judging). Race versions or special trims are not mandatory, but if submitted, can give you up to 2 points.

  • Have fun, but test yourself. This challenge is for you to practice on understanding what becomes a design identity and language for you.

  • Interiors are not mandatory but can earn you up to 3 points! 1 point for just putting a dash and seats, 1 for putting effort (covering the floors, door panels, center console and etc) and one last point for going above and beyond!

  • I don’t want to limit the budget and prices for the first part, please ensure to keep it realistic to the era and don’t overdo it. I trust you.

  • I’m not gonna accept cars from Alrima update as it’s too unstable right now. If the update is fully released, I’ll extend the deadline to let you update your designs.

Decade specific rules

  • 60s:

  • Cars must use leaded fuel

  • Cars must use open differential

  • Max capacity for engines is 6.5 liter/396 Cubic inches

  • 80s

  • Cars must use unleaded fuel

  • Cars must meet WES6

  • Cars must have at least one feature (mechanical or cosmetic) carried over from 60s.

  • max capacity for engines is 5 lieter/305 cubic inches

  • 00s

  • Cars must use unleaded fuel

  • cars must meet WES8

  • Cars must have at least one feature (mechanical or cosmetic) carried over from 60s and one from 80s.

  • max capacity for engines is 5 lieter/305 cubic inches

Pointing system

It’s average of each decade.

  • 15 points for designs (excluding interior)
  • 15 points for creating a design language (Identity built with the looks and mechanical design. This is how I break it down.
Engine /5 if it kept it’s cylinder count, displacement, name.
Body shape /5 if it moved forward with design generations whilst keeping it’s relative proportions.
Fixtures /5 the fixtures you place on the car and how it has evolved in it’s designe language )
  • 5 points for meeting it’s market demands. (Less the negative values for the market, the better)

This challenge’s deadline is 12pm MT January 15th 2025

Have fun!

Big fan of the idea, just a couple of issues with the ruleset. 3 quality is too restrictive, especially for drivetrain on super and muscle cars. With a soft price cap, quality caps make even less sense.

60s muscle could readily have LSD and more than 6.5L.

So is it 65, 75, and 85, or 60s, 80s, and 00s?

305 cu. in. max from the 80s onward? I think that equates to 5000cc at most.

absolutely in love with the concept of this event. Lets hope my enthusiasm translates to a good score.

What about model/trim year ranges? In keeping with the premise of this challenge, think they be 1960-69 in Part 1, 1980-89 in Part 2, and 2000-09 in Part 3.

Additional generations from the 70s, 90s, 10s, etc. are not required (and are outside the scope of this challenge), but you could make them if you wanted, and would help fill gaps in the lore.

So, for pt1, we are to just turn in a 60’s car?

What would you suggest for the quality sliders?
Open diff for 60s gas mainly a challenge aspect to see how people work around it

No, part one is meant for coupe body styles, you have to make 3 models from 60s, 80s and 00s

Yes 5liter forward to keep the challenge a little spicy

The reason for 5 year grace is as some may make a car for early years of the decade, so it might make sense to make an older body. Like the early 2000s mustang sharing a lot with it’s late 90s model.

I suggest no such restrictions. Price constraints are more than adequate.

Fair enough, I’ll update the rules, goals are mainly the story of design anyway…
