ABS-01P1 / 1995 Rising Sun Sports

EDIT: 17/05/2025

Clarified some rules
Added @ of third ABS- runner
Dropped Sportiness requirement from 24 to 21

Welcome to our first testing round!

I will keep this brief but I wish to make some introductions :) Me and a few mates are going to be running a series of competitions called ABS, this competition serves as the first round of our testing series, we could call it ABS Series 0. This is to test and polish our ideas, and get feedback on our rulesets to try and make them shine before we launch into a proper series. You can find out more in the first comment to this thread :)

O P E N

… you must first make an impression

So, the task at hand is simple; engineer and design the single best piece of Nippon steel ever to be made into a compact sports car to grace the 4 islands. It wont necessarily be easy, in fact it might be quite difficult, but with enough elbow grease I am sure you can pull it off. There are obviously some rules, which we will go into below :) For now, please, have a look at these reference cars to get an idea of what sorts of cars we want to see

E X A M P L E S

O P E N

A tough nut to crack

USE THE AL-RILMA OPEN BETA BRANCH
Rules are found in the segments below, but here are some absolute no-nos

  1. Don’t try to cheat with advanced trim settings (namely don’t mess with wheel width or anything to lower the center of mass)
-You can use them, but within moderation-

  2. Don’t try to cheat with intentionally broken mods, this is largely a non-issue these days

  3. Don’t cheat by using a different .car in Beam

Mods are totally cool, feel free to use them, that includes mod bodies

V I E W

It all starts with the basics

In order to even have a lick of a chance of being accepted, your car body must meet the following requirements, don't worry, they aren't too restrictive. Your chassis / body has to be/have:
  • The year has to be set to 1995, the body can be of any MY
  • a wheelbase of at least 2.4 meters, or 94.5ish inches
  • seating for at least 4 people
  • has to have some corrosion protection, a galvanized chassis is enough
  • the engine must be in the front

.... and that is it. Feel free to make whatever you please, even a van if you really really want to

V I E W

The Heart and the Soul

Now to get into the meat of things; the engine. Here, we have set slightly more regulations to try and keep power in check. As a general rule of thumb, shoot for around 140 - 160hp for the lightest cars, and up to around 250hp for the heaviest cars. Otherwise, rules are as follows:

  • Set the year to 1995
  • Engine displacement is limited: Up to 2.0L for F/I, 3.0L for N/A
  • Maximum Engine Service Cost of $700
  • Cannot have a loudness of over 45
  • Run 95 octane Premium
  • Max boost pressure of 0.8 bar
  • Superchargers are limited to a max. capacity of 1150, and max gear ratio of 1.45
  • Keep reliability over 65, The Japanese do value reliability after all
  • In order to be legal on Japanese roads, the car / engine has to meet the WES 8 emissions criteria

You wont be penalized for making excessive power, we don’t think slapping people like that is fun, but we ask you to please be realistic for the spirit of the competition.

V I E W

From the TĹŤge to the Expressway and all the way to Downtown

Now to get into the meat of things, here, I will list all of the other stats your car has to meet, there is going to be a bunch, so please bear with me
  • Seats 4 or more people
  • Minimum drivability is 55, to keep the car easy to live with
  • Minimum sportiness is 21, we are making sports cars after all (was 24)
  • Comfort minimum is 15, again, keep it livable
  • Your car has to be reasonably safe, so keep the stat at least at 45
  • Reliability is a Japanese value, so keep it at 57 or above
  • Absolute maximum fuel consumption is 10L / 100km, easy
  • We don’t limit the maximum amount of aero fixtures, but keep the downforce realistic, around 20 to 30kg at decent speed
  • Don’t use race parts such as full sport undertrays or race interiors
  • Run medium compound tires, the maximum allowed width is 225

We know getting into these stats might be a bit challenging, so we recommend you ask around if you feel like you are missing something. You can even PM me or the other competition runners. Personally, my tip is to use (+ quality) a healthy amount, it got a lot cheaper in the last updates

V I E W

In the middle of the Lost Decade

Now to go over the *really* boring stuff, the maximum allowed costs and production effort.

The techpool rule goes as follows:

  • You get up to $8.5 million combined
  • Every category starts at +3 and you add from there, don’t go below +3
To access the techpool menu, click the [+5] icon next to any quality slider

Now for everything else:
  • You get up to $21500 of approx. cost, this is visible in the [Statistics] page
  • You also get a maximum service costs of $1200 (fucking turbos I swear)
  • Maximum combined Production Units stat of 87
  • Quality range from -1 to +15

O P E N

So how will this actually work?

Your entry should consist of 2 things + and optional 3rd

  1. Your .car file, your car name is up to you, of course
  2. Some flattering pictures of your car, you can also submit a .gif if you want to go above and beyond
  3. A recording of a BeamNG lap time on the designated track, this is OPTIONAL

If you do choose to submit a laptime, you will be placed in 2 series’, one that only takes the .car file into account, and another that scores you among other people who have submitted laptimes

We will give more exact instructions and explanations in the segments below, please have a look at them

V I E W

Knock 'em out, beautiful

What is the point of having a car if it is ugly? Yeah, there isn’t one. This is why we score the looks of your car. The system is really quite simple.

  1. First, you send us the .car file, along with images of your car
  2. We make a poll where others can score your car between 1 and 20
  3. We have a few more articulate people give some extra points that do NOT affect your final score
  4. We publish the results

Style is half the battle, so make sure you nail it. Shoot for realism, that has sold well in the past from our experience. Remember to put effort into the photographs as well

Please do not take offense if you score worse than you thought you would, it is entirely unpredictable. We will show off our favorite picks as a separate treat

V I E W

The Ride of your life

This is where we score the engineering side of the car. This process isn't complicated either, but it is objective
  1. We apply scoring multipliers to the stats of your car
  2. We take each category and tally up to get your score
  3. Your car gets it’s engineering placement

Multipliers go as follows

1.15x. Drivability, Sportiness and Comfort
1.1x. Cost, Reliability, Fuel economy
1.0x. SVC, PU, Safety

This is the other half of your placement in the competition. From our experience, well balanced cars work the best. Have a look at the scoring multipliers too, we are going to experiment them as publish rounds to figure out a good system

O P T I O N A L : V I E W

Scream and Shout

Now for the most simple part, your lap-time. There are some rules:

  1. Record it, we need proof that you actually ran a 00:01 minute lap
  2. Stay inside the track, cutting the shoulder is allowed
  3. DO NOT EDIT YOUR CAR IN BEAM

The track you are to race on is Hirochi Circuit Short

Simple, isn’t it? We rank you on lap-time and add it to your total. This also adds you to the +LAP-TIMES scoreboard. We suggest you upload the recording of your lap-time to Youtube, and send us the link to it.

O P E N

Cut your teeth

In order to submit your car for review and scoring, you can choose to do any of these 3

  • A: Reply to the thread with the file and images (preferred)
  • B: PM it to @Cobby or @Shitsoom or @bulba
  • C: Send it to the submissions channel of our Discord server (coming soon)

You are free to submit your car at any time of your choosing within the deadline

I am re-treading ground here, but your entry must include your .car file, images of said car, and optionally a recording of your lap-time. We will use your username in the scoreboard

Your deadline is 2025-06-06T17:00:00Z

This is still a bit in the air, if enough people tell us the deadline is too strict, we can extend it by a week

Let’s fucking do it, welcome to Phase 1

And that is all! We wish you good luck and happy building!

If you are unsure if something is about your car is fine or not, ASK! We want lots of submissions, it is in our interest that your car qualifies

Below, in the first few comments, we will post the link to the style vote, post the scoreboards and keep you updated

We will also have some information about how this series actually works, and an upcoming Discord server.

You gotta start somewhere, right?

In all truthfulness, we aren't sure how big of a demand there is for a thing like this. Either way, we decided to try our hand at building a small community from the ground up.

We think the key to good quality is feedback and iteration, and what better way to get that than making a place where we can freely chat and brainstorm these rounds. The goal is to, eventually, become excellent. More than anything, we want you to be a part of this.

What does this actually mean?

Well in short, for how the competition actually progresses, basically nothing. We run the competitions here on the Forums, and on Discord. Think of it like crossplay. You can submit your cars here, or on our Discord, an entry is an entry. We just wish to see you interact with us, and help us actually get good at this competition stuff.

Hope to see you there, space cowboy!

ABS - AutoBeam-Series

Phase 2 information

So what is a Phase?

In short, we have split our competitions in 2 phases, Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 1 is (for now) a 3 week long design and engineering effort, often of a fairly tame nature. We thought the idea of iteration would be interesting, so we came up with Phase 2.

Phase 2 is an shorter (for now) 2 week competition, where the goal is to iterate on the theme of the last competition. For instance, if phase 1 is 1985 Sports cars, then Phase 2 could be 1985 Group B. We would love to see P1 entrants make a rally car out of it, but you don’t have to. You can also just make a new car. P2 is just a way to have a faster, more exciting round with some iteration in there if you want.

Welp, phase 2 should start right around when p1 is judged. So sometime next month, hope to see you there!

Asking for clarification

  • Automation version (Al Rima or stable) does not play into rules, if yes, i’m guessing Al Rima version which offers the super chargers only?

  • Are cars required to be from a Japanese based company or is it cars that are sold in Japan.

Also as a suggestion, a price increase can help a lot with getting better cars. I suggest something like 25k over 21.5K

The idea was to make Japanese cars for the Japanese market, but I guess I never did specify. On the budget part, we will see but we did put a lot of thought in, these are meant to be on the more affordable side. Despite that limitation I still got a 2.9l powered AWD coupe in spec

So no NSX or MR2 alikes?

1. Don’t try to cheat with advanced trim settings

I think it would be smart to specify a limit on the use of advanced trims no? if its not a clear distinction then it could lead to problems down the line.

2. Don’t try to cheat with intentionally broken mods

Can we have an example of a “broken mod”? i don’t know which mod would be considered broken? did you mean any mod thats not on the Steam Workshop?

Also why submit the .car file to discord and not here? and where is the Discord link?

Ooh nice. A discord submission requirement AND no discord link…

That’s the price as shown in the Markets section.

Why, then, isn’t there a maximum Engineering Time quota?

Why use these and not sports compound tires (as some of the inspirations did in real life)? To keep costs down and everyone on a level playing field? On that note, you may consider forcing everyone to set wheel/tire quality to 0. And what about maximum width or minimum profile? If you insist on either of those, I’d suggest 255mm for the former and 45 for the latter, with tire widths not ending in 0.

That’s the engine service cost, not the trim service cost.

To match the inspirations, shouldn’t we have to be limited to a maximum of 6 cylinders?

What about a maximum wheelbase limit? 2.7m would be appropriate in that case.

If this rule is retained, then will all those seats have to be full-sized? Better yet, I’d suggest dumping this rule altogether.

In reality, there was a gentlemen’s agreement limiting manufacturers to 276bhp - although some export-spec trims made more than this.

What about a sports interior (not as light and bare-bones as a racing interior), but still lighter than most other options? Does that count as a racing part as well? And are magnesium wheels also treated as racing parts?

In any case, I could take the open alpha build for a spin just for this challenge.

The best example of broken mods is the various open wheeled bodies on the workshop. The width of the cars is abnormally low (because it only counts the inner body, not the suspension and wheels), which makes for an abnormally low frontal area for drag purposes and hence an abnormally high top speed and efficiency.

Other sorts of broken mods used to exist, but the possibility for them got patched out.

Yeah I am working on that, we prefer you to submit here either way.

Engine SVC is limited to 700 while trim iz 1200

We went with medium compounds limited to 225 because these are budgety cars and we felt sports would make things get out of hand. Most of the cars we based this on would have come with 205 - 215mm wide, high quality regular tires.

You are free to use a sport interior, its a sport interior, not a race interior

Why limit ET and PU when they scale roughly the same? I see no point in doing both

That gentlemans agreement was bigger bullshit than Gross HP measurements.

I am working on the Discord, we prefer you submit it here either way as that is less of a hassle for us. We give you 3 options on how to submit and the server is the last one, I don’t see how 2 people have already went to the last and least preferred one as the default

I agree on the advanced trim part, but it really is a nightmare to try and regulate, and seeing how often I need to use them to build my cars, I don’t feel like banning them. I would want to say I trust the competitors to know where to roughly draw the line, but I will specify my intent a bit better. Really it just boils down to tire manipulation and such

Sorry for double posting, but I wanted to ask if the requirements felt a bit too tight. I had a pretty easy time meeting them, but if they seem too high, we can edit them to be a bit more lenient

Your wording made it seem like those were 3 required steps and not 3 different options.

My bad, yeah I suppose you can read it like that. I’ll edit it after I get home from my trip. HTML formatting on mobile isn’t fun. Enjoy the round though friend
