Affordable 1970s Sports Car Challenge Part 2: U.S. Federalization Boogaloo

Try lowering compression, increase ignition timing (to compensate) and +quality in the exhaust. I did +4 on the exhaust to bring the emissions down.

Switching to hypereutectic cast pistons will also help lower emissions. And of course using a two way cat is pretty much a must.

You must use a new trim of your part 1 entry. The engine cannot be swapped, it must be a new variant of the same engine.

1975 Régal Coati 1700-F GTE

This federalized version of the Coati includes all the latest '75 regulations for the US, including emissions and safety. This meant a major front fascia facelift for the engineering team tho - gone was the long nose. To compensate for the now 90hp engine, a loss of 20hp compared to the '70 engine, the Coati went through a diet - it lost nearly 80kg. This means the emission compliant 90hp dual weber engine is not such a big loss on performance, still retaining a sub-9 second 0-60. With the diet, improved sport tires and general tuning, it means the Coati is now even more agile with much better cornering performance.

Visually, the facelift also includes a second side mirror, wheel arches and slight cosmetic changes all around. Régal now offers a second color for the Coati - Vert Lime. The interior was sacrificed however - lighter cloth and plastic instead of heavier steel, chrome and leather, which helped keep it down to 780kg only. While a bit more uncomfortable, it is a much better sport car now - hopefully enough to justify the 15% price increase.

You can order one at any Angus dealership in mainland US.

1975 Cambridge Kobold 1600 XE

For the 1975 model year, the Cambridge Kobold has seen a host of improvements.Better interior components, revised brakes and suspension tuning, alloy wheels (a company first!), a manual sunroof, auxiliary driving lights, and a five speed manual transmission has increased the XE’s drivability, comfort, and reliability. Larger bumpers, side impact beams, and a side mounted fuel filler neck allows for excellent safety scores with the NHSA.

The undersquare 1.6 litre OHV inline four has been revised to comply with the new '75 emission rulings. It now has a catalytic converter and will run on unleaded fuel. It produces 71 horsepower at 5.900 rpm and 75 pound feet of torque at 3,500. It allows the Kobold to reach nearly 19mpg and a 0 to 60 speed of 12.3 seconds. You can purchase a 1600 XE from your local Cambridge dealer for only $16,000.

Oh, and just to clarify, we are finding that 2900 emissions on the engine tab pages, correct? Not the one on the final detail stats for the car? I noticed that are wildly different numbers.

Tiffosi to hold US sales of Zero BB coupe
Milan, Italy - During a press briefing on wednesday, Costrutione Tiffosi confirmed that the Zero BB midship sportscar would only be sold in Europe for a remaining 2 years and then leave the market without a successor. The project’s lead engineer, Mr Federico Risi, stated Zero BB “not to be a priority to be federalized.” Instead, the company would focus on the US debut of its Chittai sedan, which has been on sale in europe since november 1973 and is finally expected to make its US debut for the 1975 model year, severely delayed.

Yeah, it’s the Engine Variant emissions. The detail stats one would be the Trim Emissions.

In a large shed car manufactory workshop, somewhere on the northwest shores of Lake Mara:

OOC: I know that a click on adv 70s safety would do the trick, but the main issue was styling anyway… and SCNR.

Everything’s bigger!

Get your increased fuel economy, increased engine size, bigger bumpers and lights while having a bigger amount of cash to spend later!

Nah, I’m fucked. The emission just bugged and now it’s at 9999.

You are using leaded fuel if you are seeing that level of emissions

That’s it, yeah, I was clicking all sorts of stuff but that.

E: Still hopeless, well that’s it for me then.

Did you try a 4 Barrel Carb with a two-way catalytic?

1975, the year of the car…or was it? It definately was the year of a lot. In the car world, there were some winners(dont quote me) and there were a lot of losers(Qoute me!!)

The '75 Raven(all models) was no exception to the rule. Hampered by emissions and safety regulations, this “sports car” turned into a somewhat econo-penalty box. Going from an already low 85hp to a meager 66hp this “sports” car wasnt scorching any pavement any time soon.

Luckily for the Raven, IT wasnt the only vehicle with that dilema.

Recognizing this, the THEN geniuses at Wells decided to market the Raven instead of a track car of its day, to more of just “a cool car to have”.

What was the other option? Initially hitting the market with an overly stiff “track oriented” suspension setup. The initial Raven completely missed the mark.

For '75 the suspension was tuned for comfort, rather than sport. Wise, being that the average Joe wasnt going to the track every weekend. But for those that dared, they found that with keen precision, the Raven could slice through corners with the best. Anything less and your kissing the sidewall, thanks to the 195 series tires.

Despite the suspension being tuned for comfort and being much more driveable, the chassis engineers have yet to quell the terminal oversteer issue that plagued the original model.

And what might be the most disturbing(or not) to some is that the 1975 model is now a 2 seater instead of 4. I guess they figured there’s no sense in trying to lug around 4 people with only 66hp. But then again, this IS a mid engined car so maybe it being a 2 seater isnt so bad after all.

It’s not all bad though, because where the Raven lacks in power and refinement, it makes up for in the style department. Even with losing its headlight covers, you wont mistake that split grill from a distance. I’m told the designers went to great lengths in the mold process for the massive front and rear bumpers, as to not have them actually look like they were an afterthought.

So, for $15,500 what do you actually get? A sportsy looking not-so sports car is the answer. Fun to drive around town and in traffic, but when the speed picks up, driver beware. Not saying you need a drivers skill training course lesson, but it wouldnt hurt.

I decided to take a break from automation until the next update. So I’ll just withdraw from the challenge, it was fun though! Good luck to all competitors!

@DuceTheTruth100, sounds like you followed a similar path that I took with my entry, hahaha! Fingers crossed neither of us get lost and make it to the finals!

I had to go back and re-read your post. Yes I did take a similar path lol. Thanks to the reviews I now know things I need to work on. I feel like I’m Hyundai coming up in a world of Hondas and Toyotas.
