AGC44 - Roost (Submissions open)

Roostertail, roost
noun: a high arching spray (as of water, dust, or snow) thrown up behind a fast-moving motorboat, motor vehicle, or skier
-to roostertail, to roost

Roost is an offroad racing game where players must navigate open world A-to-B levels and rally stages in a wide variety of terrain, ranging from tight and technical enduro courses to wide-open and fast desert stages and everything in between, from day to night and summer to winter. Each stage usually takes between 10 and 25 minutes real time to complete, but may extend for even longer. Players must choose their ride for each stage from what they believe will yield the best result and fastest time. New models with more performance will be unlocked as the player levels up by completing stages and unlocking achievements. Will you take the agile Enduro-bike, the stable and powerful Sport UTV, or an ATV that offers qualities of both? The choice is yours!

Rules

Engineering will not be judged

  1. The vehicle must be a motorcycle, quad-bike/ATV, a buggy or any vehicle closely related to these. The vehicle may not be a Trophy-truck or any larger type of offroad car. See inspirations.

  2. Road legality is not required. Front and tail lights should be used if the vehicle should reasonably have them.

  3. The vehicle does not need to look completely factory stock. There are some upgrade and customization options in the game.

  4. Interiors or mechanical components that are covered by body panels or otherwise not visible to the outside are not required and will not be judged per se, but the build will be considered as a whole and having some detail also on the inside will be taken into account as a net positive.

  • Any vehicle where the driver sits inside the vehicle/cage should have at least one seat for the driver and a steering wheel or other steering system.
  • Any vehicle where the driver sits on the vehicle or the seat and steering system are clearly not inside or are an integral part of the vehicle are expected to have those already.
  1. The vehicle must be technically possible to exist in real life, but it doesn’t need to strictly follow the engineering trends of real-life vehicles.

  2. The vehicle must be open-top. No hardtops allowed. A plastic of fabric type of cover over a cage is allowed.

  3. An ad with the vehicle make and model and at least one picture must be posted here. The ad should also include basic specs for the vehicle, such as engine type and size, power, weight and drive type. These are general specs for the in-game stats.

  4. Naming scheme:

  • Model and Family name must be AGC44 - (your username here)
  • Trim and Variant name must be your make and model

I reserve the right to bin any entry that goes too far out of scope for the challenge or otherwise against the spirit of the challenge, for example meme builds.

Rules clarifications

The actual type of vehicle can be anything as long as it is suitable for the game (for example motocross, enduro or adventure bikes or others are all OK because all of these bikes can be used for offroad racing, as long as it stays within the intended scope of the game and inspirations. You probably wouldn’t take a heavy adventure bike to a motocross race, just like you wouldn’t take the motocross race bike to a Safari rally. It’s up to the player to choose the best vehicle for each level or multiplayer race and your job is to build one option for the player.

The vehicle can be an entry level model or a late-game unlock, judging criteria does not take that into account. Judging will be based purely on the build itself, not how it would compare to others in the game.

There is a case to be made for a lot of engineering choices that for one reason or another aren’t used in real life. If you can make a reasonable explanation for why your build could reasonably exist, that’s more than good enough for realism. Going with a tried and tested solution may as well be a good enough solution. All vehicles are assumed to run on gasoline internal combustion engines.

Rules 4 and 5.
For example a motorcycle should have the engine (a mechanical component) visible to the extent a motorcycle normally would. It must also have the front suspension visible, because that holds the front wheel. Same for the seat and handlebars, because the driver sits on the bike and seat and handlebars are always visible. Rear suspension on the other hand would normally be fairly hidden inside the bike, therefore rear suspension does not need to be fully modeled in the entry. A fully modeled rear suspension will result in an overall higher score in Build quality, as an example.

An UTV with a cage like the Polaris RZR should have at least one seat and a steering wheel present, because the driver sits inside the vehicle. Suspension is clearly visible on the outside so it must be present. Engine is usually not visible at all, so it’s not required. There is also nothing stopping you from making it with an internal suspension similar to the rear suspension on a quad-bike, but then it must be at least mentioned in the submission that it has internal suspension. Having a fully modeled suspension and interior will result in an overall higher score in Build quality, as an example.

To lower the barrier for entry as low as it can be, a high level of detail is not required for a legal entry. A full 3D-build is not required and great results can be achieved with minimal 3D, not much more than a normal car would need. At most dog tape needs to be used to create a buggy that is perfectly legal, as long as a suitable body is used. The vehicle will be judged based build quality and design, so it should still look good and be well made.

Judging:

Engineering will not be judged

Build quality: how well the build is made?

Design: does the build look realistic and like it could actually exist?

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC. Somewhat offroad-worthy, but it’s not exactly designed for racing. Could be a bonus or achievement unlock.

Polaris Sportsman 550 EPS. It’s more of a workhorse, not so much for racing. It could work for certain forest levels for example, but would probably be a starter vehicle you get for free after the tutorial.

How about class 11/5 VW Beetle styled cars? the Manx is close enough to make me ask.

class 11

class 5

I guess since a dune buggy is OK, a sand rail would be in scope too?

Sand rail is fine. I considered a Baja Bugs and chose to leave it out of the inspirations. I would say it’s OK, but it’s very thin ice. Anything larger would definitely be off limits. If you can give some example pictures of what you have in mind for the Beetle I can make a more informed decision

I will say that’s okay. I can see there being a use for those in the game and it’s essentially just a tintop buggy. But that’s as far as I’ll go because I do not want the challenge to be about actual cars as much as bikes and stuff like that. Anything bigger than an old Beetle transformed into an offroader is off limits.

So we need to build a lighter off-road vehicle, not a larger one as seen in the Dakar Rally or Baja 1000 Trophy Truck class.

So something like these could technically be viable as a lower power entry? Both are v small and have that sort of buggy/UTV vibe. Obviouly the 500 wouldn’t be as tame as a Jolly, but footprint and drivetrain should be viable.

are Class 1 buggies allowed or would that be too closely related to a trophy truck?

This would not be allowed because it’s too much like a trophy truck

I will add to the rules that closed cockpit cars are not allowed even if they technically would fit the Class 11 and Class 5 vibe, which also means I will have to go slightly back on my decision with those cars. This means the Class 11 and Class 5 Beetles are no longer allowed as hard-tops.

Open top Beetle or 500 or the likes are allowed if the vibe is like this:

or this:

but not this:
.

Having some sort of a fabric or plastic type of cover over a cage is still allowed like with the UTV vehicles from inspirations. Dune buggy styling is still completely fine:

Type 1 Beetle is absolutely the biggest car based platform allowed.

The less it looks like a factory car and the more it looks like a buggy, or even better, an ATV or UTV or a motorcycle the better.

The Citroen would therefore not be allowed as is and even as an open top model would still need more gasoline in it’s veins off-road energy. It needs to look like it can handle heavy jumps and rough terrain, which the concept car doesn’t really do.

A buggified 500 Jolly would therefore be fine, but a near enough stock 500 Jolly is not.

I’m trying to be as clear as possible with this, which is turning out to be really difficult. If you guys still have questions, don’t hesitate to ask. I’ll add the pictures here to the inspirations list and will look for more images of different types of vehicles that are and aren’t allowed

I’m also considering adding bonus points for [is motorcycle, +3], [is ATV (3 or 4 wheels) or UTV, +2], [is buggy, +1] and [is car, +0]. This will still keep all options viable, but will incentivize the lighter and more purpose built off-road vehicles over just modified cars. Let me know what you think of this.

Ok so it seems like we’ll have better luck with a dirt bike, atv or side by side then … better get to work

Time to go for a Quad, hope i can pull it off

Probably not needed, given things are purely visual judging (points help tends to be a balancing thing to help even out engineering choices). Unless the game itself is actively biased towards a MX vs ATV sort of vibe and doesn’t treat all the racing disciplines evenly.

No bonus points system then.

I mean, one thing to keep in mind is that buggies are built on shortened floorpans, so technically a standard bodied bug IS a bigger car, so it makes sense.
