America rode into the 70s strong and mighty. In our timeline, conflict in the Middle East led to oil shortages in the US, strangling the economy and pushing the car market to smaller, less powerful, and more fuel efficient vehicles. This also lead to the creation of CAFE regulations, emissions regulations, and the rise of the SUV and minivan.

In this world (similar to AHC01), America found a large supply of oil spanning Texas to California and ended most dependencies on Middle Eastern oil. As such, there was never a need to adopt smaller vehicles as gas remained cheap and plentiful. CAFE doesn’t exist to mandate fuel efficiency, but companies still strive to create fuel efficient products to win over customers. Emissions regulations were adopted, but at a slower rate than the rest of the world. The SUV and minivan were invented, but never saw widespread adoption, leaving station wagons as the dominant family haulers.

The year is currently 2020. America is a leading oil exporter and cars have stayed large and powerful since the 60s. Companies know that the way to capture the American market is with a large, RWD car platform with ample power, with wagons strongly preferred for family hauling. Your task is to make a wagon for this alternate America, either as a brand new platform or as an update to an existing one.

TLDR: Create a RWD full size station wagon for the average American family.

No carbon fiber allowed (including carbon fiber wheels and carbon ceramic brakes)
No race parts, including anything with the word race in it, billet steel parts, and semi slicks (you’re doing something very wrong if you’re putting semi slicks on a land yacht).

Design: The car must look snazzy and modern, even though it’s on the cheaper end of the model lineup.

Prestige: Big cars come with big, powerful modurs. Prime for showing off and one upping other dads at the Fourth of July BBQ.

Comfort: America is big. Long car rides are commonplace. The car must be comfortable.
This will be evaluated with 2F 3R seats, regardless of seating configuration.

Practicality: The car must be able to hold the family and their gear/luggage.
I will ignore the base stat and evaulate this holistically.

Reliability: The car must be dependable enough for anything thrown its way. The last thing the family wants is a breakdown on a roadtrip.

Drivability: A car this size will be tricky to drive in tight areas, but the easier it is to drive, the better.

Service costs: It shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg to keep this thing on the road, but the average American has excess money. Insert inflation comment here

Sportiness: It’s not a sports car by any means, but there should be a “smiles per gallon” factor to it.

Price: Even the more budget customers can be somewhat free with their purse strings, but a car than do more for less will be appreciated.

Fuel economy: Fuel is cheap and plentiful, and those oil reserves haven’t dried up yet.

Safety: A car this size should be far from a death trap. Don’t skimp out here.

This equates to 91 RON for those in the rest of the world.

Such a lenient emissions compatibility standard should allow for OHV engines to remain competitive - and compatible with the rule set.

Whether the latter is a regular or high-flow unit doesn’t matter, nor is a pre-cat required.

Or ~2.8m at minimum for metric system users.

In any case… You wait ages for a strictly wagon-based round to come along, and then two of them (I’m lookin’ at you, QFC73) arrive at once.

I don’t want to knock the challenge, because it’s a great idea. None of what I’m about to say is about the challenge.

I am fed up with the pushrod slander.

Pushrods do not need lax emissions standards to be viable.

I just went and spent all of ten minutes making a test mule. 3.1m Tahara, basic techpool, barely any quality, premium interior and a 7 leeder vee eight modur making 360 hp and 450 lb ft with an electronic limiter to keep the speed legal because it can hit 180 mph. And a ladder chassis with advanced safety to bring it up to 2.25 tonnes. It hits WES ELEVEN. Even a fat, bloated land barge can hit the hardest standards - you just need to know what you’re doing. This isn’t some cheesefest, it’s an alu engine with precats and hypereutectic pistons that doesn’t even use an eco head. Perhaps the compression is a little low, but that’s it - and I could pull it up with actual

Folks have been coddled, folks have gotten weaker and weaker emissions standards, and just haven’t learned the system. You can absolutely hit WES11 with a pushrod in 2020.

It’s not emissions standards that hamstring pushrods. It’s more the everything else. At the economy side of things where the cost savings matter, most realistic buyers also care about fuel costs - which suuuuuck for pushrods. At the pricier side of things, most buyers - especially influenced by challenge hosts - value the additional power and RPM capacity. The niche for a cheap but inefficient engine doesn’t exist in 2020.

It’s not evil emissions standards that kill Pushrods.

It’s players not knowing how to use the new emissions system, and it’s also a changing market that squeezed them out. Pushrods are more viable here than elsewhere - because fuel economy is a one-eagle priority, not because WES8.

Can we please, please stop repeating this myth that Pushrods can’t hit WES11 and need to be coddled? Players just need to git gud.

To be honest, I didn’t think anyone would even try a pushrod engine. I kept the emissions lax because it fits the alternate timeline.

I’m playing around with the idea myself, a simple 575Ci V8, ~550hp ~600lb-ft sounds about right for a modern no gas crisis american engine. Fuel Efficiency does suffer a bit still working on that…

But it’s WES11 compliant, and moves my wagon down the strip in about 13 seconds with an automatic. So overall not to shabby for a testing platform.

Dude, same results with a twist 500” SOHC but we got the same power at all most the same revs lol

  • clarified that an ad and a discourse DM of the car file are required for submission
  • Banned carbon fiber
  • Added carbon ceramic brakes to the banned list
