ARM38: Life’s Little Luxuries

Previous round: ARM37
What is ARM?

The Client

Carl is 36 years old and lives with his wife in Woking, Surrey. He is a fan of retro vehicles from the early 80’s up to the mid 90’s. Kind of the heydey of what were your boring run of the mill cars when Carl was a lad. His wife, Mandy however doesn’t understand this at all and much prefers modern cars with all of the amenities and safety that buying something built in the current century actually provides.
The subject of this ARM is a car he has currently owned for about five years now, but even though it is a high range model for the time it really isn’t what you would call a “premium” vehicle.
With this in mind the challenge in this ARM is to modify the car into a more upmarket vehicle that satisfies both what Carl and Mandy want.

Carl wants:

  • The looks of the base car kept as much as possible, he much prefers the retro aesthetic to modern designs.
  • Bright and interesting colours of 80’s and 90’s cars instead of the sea of monochrome in anything from the 2000’s and onwards.
  • He isn’t a fan of the minimalism of modern cars and the ipad on the dash look of the screens.
  • Will be using the car as a daily driver in summer and taking it to shows, so will need to not be a complete pig to drive.

Mandy wants:

  • She much prefers the reliability and ease of drive of a new modern car to the hassle of something from 40 years ago.
  • Safety of a new car, older cars are just inherently less safe by there very design.
  • Mandy actually really loves the uncluttered look of new cars.
  • Probably won’t be driving the car much as it is Carl’s car but doesn’t want to be sitting in a stripped out cardboard box.

For more info three questions are allowed to be asked in a direct message. These are private unless you really want the results public, it’s up to you.

The Car

The car for this round is another fictional Automation brand. It is the Knightwick Cosmopolitan classic. In its day this was the upmarket model in the Cosmopolitan range, the classic sedan body style only being available with the larger 1275cc engine.

The guidelines here are a bit vague considering what kind of car he wants. A suggestion (if that is not too much strain on the host of course), could it be an idea to add what we have had in some previous ARMs that you could ask the client X number of questions to draw your conclusions regarding that?

I’ve added some parts in “the client” to try and help with regards aiming the type of car.

The question idea sounds good too, was that used previously in ARM? is it public questions before or secret in dm’s?

Also i forgot the damn steering wheel and pedals so i’ve just uploaded a new version of the car

It has been secrets in DMs so you get 2-3 questions to choose wisely…

Does replacing the suspension type on either axle with a different one count as an extra-cost option?

Good call, I’ve added that to the list now

The 3 speed transmission doesn’t exist in 2020, so would a 4 speed automatic be still considered “free”? Also does the car need to hit some emission requirement?

No don’t worry about emissions, it’s still an old car at the end of the day so just running on unleaded would be better than the four star it was designed for.

Yeah the gearbox thing is a bit annoying tbh, to save getting people to download a revised car with 4 gears I’ll just do your suggestion and say a four speed basic auto is no extra cost.

What version of the game are we supposed to be using?

Stable non alpha branch

Maybe update the car for future competitors to avoid confusion for them at least?

The usual thing to do for ARM is that no matter the number of gears, a swap to the same TYPE of transmission is done with no cost penalty. Worth considering?

I guess rules are nailed now since a while ago…?

Yeah no one had any other thoughts on changes so seemed good to go.

LMJ DESIGN SMOOTHLY TRANSITIONS THE COSMOPOLITAN TO SOMETHING FOR CRUISING THE ROADS OF THE 21st CENTURY!

As a client, you wanted subtle changes on the outside - here they are. Staying true to the original shape, we uncluttered the look by dechroming it and giving colour to some of the unpainted plastics. Speaking of paint, we stayed true to the spirit of the original - but now with a bit more shimmer, a bit more shine and a neat pearlescent effect. Smoke tinted headlight covers both smoothens the flow of the lines as well as it protects the headlight lenses from rock chips, and to match it, indicators and taillights were changed out for smoke tinted units. A subtle and period correct bodykit enhances the lines, rather than cluttering them down, and neat little period correct touches are also classic Minilite style alloys, fog lights and a flip up style sunroof.

If the changes are subtle on the outside, you will have a surprise if you look underneath. We grafted in the whole front subframe from a 90s Honda Civic HX, which gives it double wishbone suspension and a CVT transmission. We could of course have given it the Honda engine too, but more true to the soul was to still keep it Knightwick powered. However, we bored out the standard block, gave it fuel injection and a low pressure turbocharger. 95 hp in this light car will maybe not make it a powerhouse, but still a zippy little car that will feel quick and nimble, as well as keeping up with modern traffic. Upgraded brakes means that it also can stop when the modern traffic does the same. Electric power steering and ESC makes it even more effortless to drive, while air suspension means that it can ride smoothly over bumps without losing out on handling.

The inside was kept close to stock in spirit, but now it has wood and leather worthy of a british car, and a new black carpet replaced the old beige one. Air conditioning was added, as well as electric windows and a 8 speaker stereo system with retro looks but modern technology. The seats were swapped out for modern ones with better support, headrests all around, built in pretensioning seatbelts as well as anti-submarining design for better safety, also ISOFIX mounts for child seats were added, a great addition for the family man.

All of this will be yours for $20 200 AMU!

How do you download the car and put it in automation

You need to place the .car file into the car import folder, it’ll then tell you if you need to subscribe to any mods used.
