Assetto Corsa Challenge - New round - GTR GT3 on Road America!

Yes

Alright guys, this round will draw to a close in about 24 hours, so @findRED19 prepare yourself

Don’t forget to put your laptimes into the sheet!

So cobra next? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

No driving assist means i’m most likely gonna be shit… You know, keyboard and all

The track should be relatively easy compared to what we’ve raced on so far. So there’s still hope @koolkei

My idea was the Cobra on Silverstone 1967:
Car:
Only auto clutch & auto blip assists allowed.
100% damage
Vintage Tires
Tire wear on
Manual Gearbox
35L of gas to start the time attack sessions. (the fuel gauge will read exactly 1/4 tank of gas  )

Track:
Green surface
25*c
any time of day

If needed we could do an “easy” rules set? If everyone is on-board with that. It would allow any changes/assists to the car, but not track settings… Still 35L of gas to start though.

I’ll get my good time (that someone will definitely slaughter right away) when AC is done updating.

###Time to beat: 1:48.845

Tire wear on? Well. Fuck that hope. I’ve actually done enough laps on that 240R to actually almkst run out of fuel

I honestly found it more engaging with tire wear on. At first you have fresh tires that need to be broken in, then you’re running around with hot tires that are at their optimal, and eventually you find them loosing grip due to wear.

On the bright side, I never specified anything more than 1x tire wear, It could have been a lot worse… (and look as my suggestion for an “easy” rule set…)

yeeeeep definitely time to break out the wheel again. Either that or short shift so much :joy:

edit: You may need to allow people who literally do not own a wheel or controller some grace, I suspect the traction will be prohibitively poor i.e. this challenge is probably very unfair for koolkei.

p.s. with the mouse my favourite thing in the Cobra is to turn the electronic stability to like 25% and then lay down some massive smoky drifts hahaha. Good times for casual fun.

Would my “easy” rules allow that? …or do you want to modify the first rule set?

I dunno to be honest. I’m going to give it a test run…

EDIT: yeah so it’s not that bad if you’re very very careful with the mouse. I’d still say with a keyboard it’s going to be tricky. But, uh, with the settings you already specified I got a 1:48 while spinning out across the finish line on the first lap when the track was still green and the tyres cold, so :joy:

EDIT 2: aha I see what you’ve done here. It takes time and effort and care to get the tyres up to an appropriate temperature and you have to pace yourself to get the proper hot lap. Screw it up and you’ll crash and have to start all over again! I forsee the times tumbling quite quickly, I was able to get a 1:45 on the 2nd lap but then pushed it too hard and shot off the track.

Exactly!

…and the track is simple enough for keyboard players to handle ok on…
…and my best hot lap was completely meet by your first cold mouse attempt… I’ll try some more this week though.

Fiddled with the settings a bit. Have the following recommendations for non-wheel users:

  • Open the diff right up. You don’t need locked diff when applying full throttle in the corner, the car has so much power to weight you’ll oversteer.
  • Reduce the positive camber on the rear wheels. Also better for tyre wear, if only a little.

With these, it’s possible to apply full throttle judiciously in the fast corners and you won’t shoot off the course ass backwards into a “surprisingly solid hay bale”.

p.s. 1:43 on the 3rd lap haha. I estimate a maximum performance lap will be something like 1:41.

Well… I’ll try it first. And nothing was said about tire blanket :imp:

I noticed that too but given the spirit of the challenge I would assume that it should be off, given what Red said

1:56 good enough? :joy:

edit:
actually. i have even surprised myself

This car has a LOT in it if you set up for your control and driving style. The bump and rebound settings are particularly crucial for just how much grip versus drift you have in the corners. For me the trick is setting the car up such that I have heaps of grip, can rotate around the slower corners well, but if the car does drift I can easily control it.

With this, I reckon even a high 1:39 is possible. I’m at 1:40.4 on lap3 at the moment. (edit: read the time wrong. Will record if I have time.)

yeah… i’m not doing that again. maybe… maybe i’m a masochist and i will…

too much suspension setup choices… and i forgot to save my last setup. fuck…

anyway. i got a decent time with 0 driving aids on keyboard

Keep the spreadsheet updated guys

here you go. my fails at 0 driver aids using keyboards

On second thought scratch what I said earlier. These long sweeping bends with subtle adjustments required for apex is super keyboard unfriendly.

On the other hand it’s super mouse friendly. I broke into 1:39, but my setup is weird and extremely finnicky under braking. I will upload video tomorrow, you will notice that I have to countersteer even before I start turning, it will blow your mind :joy:

EDIT: here’s the video. Check out all that “steering wheel isn’t even turning the direction of the corner ever” action haha.

@koolkei ok so I finally watched your video hahahaha holy shit I died :joy: yeah the car’s completely vicious the moment you get wheel spin, you need 100% commitment to whatever it was you were doing because if you change your mind halfway through a moment the car will bite your ass in two. I recommend taking a close look at the rear bump and rebound settings and adjusting particularly the ones that will slow your car’s handling down plus give you more rear traction. That may help. Still, 1:49 on keyboard, that’s wizardly.

with assists
