I decided to try my hand at track building, and here is the result.
My process, for those who might be interested:
I took multiple screenshots of the track in Google Earth, composited them together in Photoshop, placed that image in a sketch in SolidWorks and traced out the track, took the parametric data from SW and wrote the .LUA by hand, exported the track sketch as a PDF and imported it back into PS and used it to create the track outline, threw some filters at it, stole some bits and pieces from Der Bayer’s “Green Hell”, et voila.
UPDATE:
I’ve added a proper version with the chicanes on the mulsanne straight, also, I fixed a pair of transcription errors at Indianapolis and Arnage corners. La Sarthe sans chicanes.zip (1.83 MB) La Sarthe avec chicanes.zip (1.82 MB)
It seems you have worked very hard for it, La Sarthe is a great track with a huge history, good job on doing it.I’ve noticed that the Mulsanne straight hasn’t got the chicanes, so you’ve made the pre-1989 track or is a mixture of the new one rest with the old straight?
BTW, your timing for releasing it is just perfect, with the 24h going on right now
I wanted a track that would let stupidly over-powered cars stretch their legs, with plenty of corners as well, and with the race going on, and my love of the old Group-C cars, La Sarth with the full Mulsanne straight was the perfect fit. Though I suppose I’ll add a proper version with the chicanes tomorrow, since it would probably only take another half an hour of work at this point.
You sir have made my day. I was just this moment thinking about whether anybody was making the track or whether I should try it myself. Hats off to you!
p.s. how did you go about determining slope of the track?
I was actually making this track myself, but had to stop due to busy times. I was like 60% done… SNAP! Now someone beat me to it Andin a very decent way, too! Good job!
Right, time to see if I can get a time of 3:21 qualifying, like the Toyota this year…
…I was stuck for a while then I remembered that qualifying laps aren’t from a standing start, duh. So add a flying lap on the end of it all and… yep, smashed the qualifying times. Of course, making a car that would actually survive 24 hours of Le Mans is an entirely different proposition
How do you add a flying lap? Just re-insert the layout coords? I was having trouble getting my GT-class car anywhere near Le Mans qualifying times, until I realized the same thing about flying laps.
That is exactly how. You reinsert the LUA file data for the track coordinates at the end (to create a 2nd lap), and place your 2nd sector at the start/finish line. Then sector 3 will be start to finish single lap from speed rather than from a dead start as the first sector is.
