So one of the engineers in the company I work for is a backyard mechanic, amateur fabricator and general gearhead. His passion is 80’s to 90’s volvos I was talking with him today as I saw his normal car wasn’t in the lot. I thought you folks would enjoy the conversation that ensued.
“Where’s the 740?”
“it’s off the road this week, I’m going to repower it now that the 5 speed came in” (it’s been a “3 speed” auto since he bought it, the last owner having lost fourth and never bothered to fix it)
“Cool new redblock?”
“Yeah I found a 2.5 liter”
“Nice, going dual cam yet?”
“Naw, going to stick with the single for simplicity, it can make more then enough power just turn up the boost, the air will find find it’s way to the cylinders.”
Anyone else know someone like this ?
My neighbour has a R32 GTR, so I was talking to him about it.
“Are you going to tune it up or keep it stock?”
“I’m going to keep it stock and combine the best parts of my old R32 with this one.” (A friend of him throttle too much in a corner, rear end broke out and tapped the sidewalk…)
“Alright cool. (Continued helping him removing the fluids, intercooler and pulley)”
Two days later
“How far along are you with the engine?”
“Screw that, I’m going to tune it. Get some boost in there, and some high end crankshaft.”
“Right, so no stock anymore?”
“Nope.”
1 week later
“Did you order your parts yet?”
“Yes and guess what, I also ordered this… and this… and this… and this… and this…”
“Riiight… so I’m guessing 600HP?”
“sigh I couldn’t resist…”
And we both laughed
Not 600 but my friend was pushing about 350 crank from the old 2.3 before he rolled the 240 it had been in. After that he pulled back on the boost and stuck it in the 740 but its getting pretty worn by now.
