CSR 129 - "Upgrades" in Freedom [ABORTED]

Just to make sure it would be for example 2020 for the model and family but you would be choosing bodies that unlock 1980 and before in automation

you’d be choosing 1980 for trim year and thus 1980 bodies and technology

At the expense of being critical, this is maybe the messiest and most incoherent CSR brief I’ve ever seen.

Ash so it’s 1980 trim and variant and you basically use your imagination for the 2020 part. It does seem kinda hard to follow

major rework and clarification is currently in progress

the gist is:
maek USED car assuming current year being 1980
design it as if current year is 2020 (as in 201x for the used offering), but using 70s lighting tech

To make sure I understand, the body and tech is pre 80’s, the styling (grill, mirrors, and influences) is modern day, and the headlines and taillights are pre 80’s.

I think it’s “Make a 1980 car and advertise it as 2020”…which means…make a 1980 car!

And no idea what the calculator is for, or how to use it!

tbh…

This CSR is reaching realms of fucked-up-ness never seen before in my chsllenges or CSR altogether.

It also has reached a point of me really wanting to pass this onto CSR128s 3rd place contestant, as my idea seems to be flawed beyond repair…

Or just say we are in an imaginary market were there’s only 80’s cars that have 2000’s look…

And we have to do one… Your brief is too complicated…

The simple yet effective fix would be to instead have your protaganist looking for a modernized car. One with a classic body, modern engine and modern styling. But if you pass on then no worries, It’s a good idea, just hard to execute.

don’t mind me but i’ve tried re writing some of it with slightly less rules and clarification to see if it makes it any easier. And i’ve added clarification to some of the styling rules.

everything is in here

May 2020; some random Club in central Lauda

A SovietSpecial evening is currently ongoing within the club, as such various tracks of Russian Hardbass can be heard.

While his friend circle is thoroughly enjoying the Bass-Heavy music and good old Vodka, Valentin has some less-than entertaining thoughts:
Valentin: “Sooo… how are you gonna get home?”
Christian (visibly and audibly intoxicated): “Drive lol.”
Valentin: “Sure… THIS drunk on open roads. Without a car.”
Christian: “Aww fuck… anyone got a car we can borrow?”
Nathan and Skyla (in unison): “Of course not you dumbfuck!”
Christian: “Val… you really need to get a car!”
Valentin: “Why?”
Nathan: “Why not? Look… you can take the car and go ANYWHERE at ANY time! Its great! And maybe drive us home from the club…”
Valentin: “Well… I have a bicycle.”
Nathan: “…just to trundle along the country road at 20kph?”
Valentin: “23kph.”
Nathan: “Still slower than a even moped.”
Skyla: “Look. Val doesn’t want a car and you know that… But… (turns to Valentin) Why is that?”
Valentin (mildly annoyed): “Have you seen how expensive they are??”
Skyla: “Says the guy with the strongest Cashflow by a long shot…”
Valentin: “If you lot wouldn’t spend half your income into alcohol and prostitutes you’d also have money…”
Christian: “Here’s a deal… You go have a look at used cars for whatever amount you can come up with. Once you have it we’ll pay for fuel on any trip that is made with at least one of us in the passenger seats.”
The others nod in acceptance.
Valentin: “Well at least that’s the biggest expense covered… i’ll see ya in a week or so. Maybe with a car and all.”
Valentin nearly instantly leaves for home to have a look at Craneslist for used cars.

The Customer:

  • Valentin Schrant
  • 21 Years of age
  • Uni student in 6th semester.
  • 2.21m/ 7ft tall, but skinny.
  • Normally Cycles to and from places on his bicyle.
  • Various friends have persuaded him to inestigate purchase of car. (Party-going friends need a driver lol.)
  • Recently acquired a drivers license. (4 months)
  • Has driven fairly frequently since (borrowed/ friends cars on trips too long to cycle).
  • Lives in Capital City of Lauda (1.1 million people; reference will be Cologne).
  • Has reluctantly agreed to investigate the purchase of a used car.

The car he most frequently drove (and thus is most familiar with):
2019 Anhultz Mimas VII C (owned by a friends father, basically a run-of the mill sedan similar to a 1979 VW Jetta I IRL)

The Country of Holsia:

Geography
  • Basically Switzerland
    * About the size and shape of Bavaria
    * A few hundred KM off the coast of Ireland
    * Very wet/snowy
    * Holsian roads are well-maintained and Frequently cleared of snow and/ or debris.

Relevant Politics

  • Currency is the Holsian State Dollar (HSD; 1:1 euivalent of AMU, for simplicity)
  • Relevant vehicular laws (Lighting and all) are German-Based
    * US-sized Plates (Vanilla US-sized plates of Hetvesian style)
    * National speed limits
    * 110kph for multi-lane highways = “Autobahn”
    * 90kph outside of city limits (unless otherwise specified)
    * 50kph in cities (frequently limtited to 30kph)
    * Right side of road driving

Alternate History:

  • Road vehicle development is lagging behind by 40 years, making a 2020 car in Holsia the same tech wise as a 1980 car in the real world.
  • Road vehicle styling principles however are of the current day kind while employing above technology.
→ You are basically building an 80s car with modern styling trends, using 1980 and earlier bodies and lighting technologies.

"What "modern Design on 40 year old tech" might look like

Basically: take an 80s car, then make it look modern and THEN make the modern version use 80s lighting tech

NONE OF THESE CARS REPRESENT VALENTIN’S DESIRES!! They just show what cars may look like.

The Car He's thinking of:

:star::star::star::star::star:
Purchase price
(Government university funding laws limits his sellable net-worth. This he needs as cheap a car as reasobably possible)

Fixed running costs
(Valentin may have the strongest Cashflow of his friend circle, but that is mostly due to his basically non-existent cost of living. Once he is done studying he want’s to have some buffer)

Reliability (coming from a basically bulletproof bike Valentin expects his car to last. Knowing rust being an issue, he will have it treated for rust protection separately, if necessary.)

:star::star::star::star:

Driveability
(While Schrant does know how to drive from the various trips in the Mimas, rain/ snow makes for a less-than car-friendly environment, especilly for a relative novice behind the wheel)

Styling
(He does like himself a car that looks good, even if cars are merely a means of transit to him.)

Comfort
(Schrant has modded his bike to the extent of being rideable for hours on end. He expects the car to be able to do the same, but without having to separately buy seat covers or a new steering wheel.)

Fuel Eco (Most trips will likely be paid by friends, yet having a car that chugs fuel like Christian does alcohol is not what Valentin has in mind)

:star::star::star:

Footprint
(a physically smaller car makes it easier for Valentin to find a parking spot within Lauda. At home, he will rent one via his landlord)

Safety
(He mostly wants it to not be an inherent deathtrap.)

Practicality
(On the off-chance that Valentin actually uses the car alone, having some practical niceties is a good idea.)

Other considerations and Limits:

Schrant is a fairly conservative and “by the book” driver.
He also is capable of operating a manual gearbox.
He does like cars and has interest in them, yet still sees them mostly as utilitarian modes of transport.

Max Price = HSD 18,000

AT LEAST 4 seats

Trim year:

  • Trim and Variant year is REQUIRED to be 1980 for the sake of body unlocks and tech.

Regulations as stated by Holsian law:

Regular Leaded (universal)
Premium Leaded (common) (9% PENALTY to fuel consumption due to pricing differences)

Bumpers:
Bumpers are REQUIRED in some form.

Exactly one pair of headlights REQUIRED.
Exactly one pair of fog lights ALLOWED.
At least one pair of turn indicators REQUIRED.

Front light colors:
Indicators are REQUIRED to be amber/ orange.
Fog lights (if installed) are are ALLOWED to be yellow.
All other fixtures are REQUIRED to be white.

Side marker/signal lights:
At least one is ALLOWED:
1) Two pairs of reflective side markers on front and rear quarter. (one pair on each quarter)
OR
2) Reflective stripe on full length of car.

Side light colors:
If applied, is REQUIRED to be amber.

Rear lights:
At least one pair of brake lights REQUIRED.
At least one pair of reflectors REQUIRED.
At least one pair of turn indicators REQUIRED.
At least one rear fog light ALLOWED. (one pair ALLOWED)
At least one reverse light REQUIRED. (one pair ALLOWED)

Rear light colors:
Brake lights are REQUIRED to be red.
Reflectors are REQUIRED to be red.
Turn indicators are REQUIRED to be amber/ orange.

Mirrors:
Driver and passenger side mirrors REQUIRED.

Aerials:
Long mast antenna REQUIRED if car has a radio.

ENTRIES ARE TO BE MADE IN STABLE RELEASE!!

I think I’ve read through this now about 5 times and I’m still struggling to grasp exactly what is to be expected of the entries here. I understand certain elements should be up for debate, such as what sort of car would be right, engine choices etc. because that shouldn’t be completely obvious. But I have literally no idea where to start.

My understanding is that this is an “alternate universe” situation where a 2020 car is basically a late-1970s car, but there is this repeated mention that it also has to be modern. A lot of these “example ideas” are basically old styling on a modern body. How is that supposed to be achieved when we’re locked to pre-1980s bodies, using lighting technology of the era and a very strict brief on how the designs must be done in order to give it that look. If everything is locked to 1980, essentially you’re getting a car from 1980. So how is it to be expected to be modern but 1980?

My other serious question is engineering. Given this is some weird “alternate universe” in which cars are modern but backdated in styling and engineering, are we going for a pure 1980 approach for engineering, or is it expected that perhaps certain elements would be possibly a bit obscure or unrealistic for a “real-world” 1980s car since we’re also expecting modern elements? How do you deem what is realistic for this “alternate universe in 2020 which is kinda like here in 1980” when we don’t live in said universe. The last thing I’d want is to be binned for doing something that “doesn’t seem realistic in engineering” if ultimately we have zero true grasp on what realistic in this world’s 2020 really is.

Also emissions are expected to below a noise level below 40? Is it emissions or noise? Please clarify.

Well…

the idea was that modern design principles are applied to an 80s body, but without the LED strips and Laser beam projectors and all…

Engineering wise, you’d be making a 1980 car.

Emissions are meant to be noise levels, i worded that wrong…

Given the immense difficulty of understanding or my apparent incompetence in clear and “dumbfuck-proof” wording, imma call it quits right here and pass the torch to CSR 128s 3rd place contestant…

Since entries haven’t even opened yet, i see less of an issue in this rather than have people build stuff and THEN cancel operations.

EDIT:
the ONLY way i see this working is make it into a generic 80s car round, which i personally do not want…

Seems like i’m not fit for creative stuff (as in: make good CSR premises) anyway…

@Jaimz is about 38 mins early

In short:

CSR 129 will not happen with me as host.
Please refer to CSR 128s 3rd place for the next runner-up.

Quite right. It was just too confusing for me to consider entering anyway.

Hiya! Responding to this, I might be able to say fuck it and take on hosting for the next CSR if @Xepy decides not to. However, I will only be able to under one condition, and that is, to make the CSR a very brief round.

What I want will be simple, that’ll be my promise. The round, if I take over, will have a much shorter submission deadline and a ruleset that will hopefully allow for some openness in entries regardless of a tight deadline.

Reviews will be concise to a certain degree, but I will still do my best to give it some flavour and keep it somewhat detailed.

If my words are set in stone and I am not to be hosting the next CSR because of it, so be it. If xepy does not decide to host, then I just may be able to take over.

Some food for thought!

Edit: Xepy says he can host. Yay! More time for my personal challenge which you might see stuff on in the next two weeks

This one is very weird. If it was something like 2020’s engineering and drivetrain on an 80’s body, maybe with some sort of retro theme, it could be understood somewhat easily. But this whole alternate universe stuff threw everybody for a loop and it wasn’t explained well.

I know it’s all over now but just putting in my 2 cents.
