1987 Mara Zora 1.3t Kabriolet

The Mara Zora (or Zorya in its home country) was developed when safety requirements in Mara’s main export markets prevented the continued export of its predecessor, the Tovarysh of 1950s vintage.

Unlike the ‘Tov’, the Zorya was a modern unibody transverse FWD construction. During the Zora’s development, several engine prototypes were tested, but ultimately a modernised version of the venerable 1.3 OHV from the ‘Tov’ was chosen as the best compromise. The Zora had to re-use a few other existing Mara components as well, such as the Tov’s headlight units.

In the mid 1980s, Mara tasked Archanan boutique car manufacturer Mayster with turning the Zora into a convertible, based on Mayster’s experience with its convertible sports car, the Triumf. To cope with the additional weight, Mayster also boosted the engine’s output through their first application of a turbocharger to a mass production vehicle.

The Yamada Rhythm is a 2+2 sports coupe initially released in 1977. The second generation debuted in 1982 for the Japanese market, with the rest of the world receiving it the following year.

A departure from the first generation, the second generation Rhythm moved towards a more boxier but slimmer design. Riding on an all-new platform with a state of the art independent suspension system, the new generation of Yamada sports coupe was designed to help further bolster their position as not only a manufacturer of reliable everyday cars, but that of high-performance vehicles too.

In 1985, alongside a new fuel injected engine, the Rhythm would receive a convertible variant, sold by Yamada themselves as a “factory” car. Initially conversions performed by a well-known North American auto shop, it later moved to serial production as a separate variant of the Rhythm. There was no specific name for the convertible variant, although some have coined the terms “roofless”, “topless”, or “Breeze Roof”.

For 1987, Yamada would introduce the Rhythm Milan, a more luxury oriented trim inspired by the old style of grand tourers. It featured a bored-up Japanese-spec fuel injected engine, going from 2.0 litres to 2.1, but still retaining the 160 PS rating from the factory. The Milan was available with numerous state of the art technologies that were a preview of items that would be available later in Yamada’s more premium offerings, notably items such as the Digital Information Display system which was the precursor to the system found on the 1988 Sendo GT. Other amenities included the Yamadamatic 4-speed intelligent automatic transmission, an upgrade in body rigidity, leather upholstery, and wood lining around the interior to name a few.

The Rhythm would conclude production in 2002 after spanning five generations, with Yamada citing declining sales and a new company direction as they shifted their business strategy to be geared more towards MPVs and crossovers. The second generation ended production in 1988, with the third generation being introduced that same year.

The Suisei Tengai GT-S is an evolution of Suisei’s top of the line 2+2 sports coupe initially released in 1985 for the Japanese market, with the rest of the world receiving it the following year across Australia, the Americas and Europe receiving Suisei’s epitomized affordable GT car.

A departure from the older archaic designs of the 70s, the new Tengai follows Suisei’s trend of the aero boxier design. Surrounded on all double wishbone suspension to provide ultimate cornering retention and comfort in any situation. Continuing Suisie’s tradition as the peak affordable sports car with the latest innovations with a sprinkle of sensibility.

In 1987, the Tengai GT-SC would be the Tengai’s first convertible trim, sold by Suisei America as its first convertible variants to be produced for the international market abroad. Although slightly heavy then its original hardtop and coupe variants, it didn’t slouch in the corners rivaling those of established sports car brands like BMW.

Of which would the international market would have an upstroked 2.8 litre Turbocharged engine, that was rated at 253 PS and other options for lower trims such as the Australian TF30XS, a naturally aspirated 3.0 litre engine.

The Tengai would continue to be a mainstay in Suisei’s lineup also being the core foundation of Suisei’s mission of the discovery of motion, technology and innovation. Pushing its boundaries to excel above and beyond its competitors.

1987 Sierra Coyote Sprint

Performance comes as standard
The Coyote Sprint is designed for the driver who puts a priority on performance. The gas pedal is your direct connection to the most powerful engine offered in a Sierra - the 5.0L EFI 255hp V8. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a standard Borg-Warner overdrive 5-speed manual, or optional 4 speed electronically controlled automatic, with Grip-Trak limited slip rear axle.

The last word in packaging
Design elements such as the long hood, deep air dam and aero headlamps combine to improve directional airflow for better stability at speed. This car is designed to be a performance machine - not just to look like one.

An interior to match the exterior
The Coyote Sprint includes all new digital instruments, as well as fully articulated 6 way adjustable sports seats in cloth or leather.

A new suspension paradigm
New for '87, the Coyote features fully independent suspension all round. The Sprint package brings gas struts front and rear, along with high rate lowered springs and uprated anti-roll bars for corner-carving domination. All-wheel disc brakes bring class-leading stopping power.

Unfortunately I’m a bit too busy (full time work, study, personal life, etc.) to make a decent ad. So here is my submission without too much stuff around it:

Meet the Autodelta Estoril Turbo, for anyone who wants a sleek but sporty convertible coupe and doesn’t want to choose between a smooth v6 or a pure bred turbo engine. The efficient and practical FWD layout common throughout the Autodelta range is used combined with a Limited Slip Differential to make this widebodied but smoothly shaped luxury automobile shoot from 0-100 km/h in 8 seconds with it’s state-of-the-art 4-gear automatic gearbox. Adaptive dampers, an aero kit, variable powered steering and sports tyres give the car a neutral character, while still being able to throw it around the corner with 1G. Stopping power is provided by disk brakes with ABS all around.

The 1987 Aether 9/2 Belle Étoile is the newest entry level luxury creation from Aether’s Voiture Atelier. Based on the standard 9/2, the Belle Étoile sacrifices none of the sporting presence that is usually lost when the roof is removed. The engineers have added extra bracing to the all aluminium body to preserve rigidity and handling dynamics. Even with the addition of more material and the premium leather hidden automatic soft top, the Belle Étoile tips the scales at only just over 3000 lbs (around 1400 kg), only around 200 lbs heavier than the original and markedly lighter than most other convertibles in this segment. This lightness also allows remarkable performance, with the Belle Étoile making the 0-60 mph sprint in just over 7.2s and toping out at 157 mph. This performance is paired with a combined 20 mpg fuel efficiency rating, which lightens the overall costs of a luxury convertible such as this.

While the performance and agility of the 9/2 Belle Étoile may leave those watching you breathless, you’ll be cozy and relaxed in its full luxury interior. Premium leather, wood, and aluminium trimmings create an atmosphere to be seen in as well as be comfortable. Aether has gone to great lengths with wind tunnel testing to minimize air buffeting at speeds below 80 mph, so you can be sure that whatever hairstyle you have will stay put without dousing it in gallons of aquanet. Aether’s iconic and award winning Hydropneumatique™ suspension soaks up every bump in the road with ease. It can be adjusted to one of three firmness levels based on road conditions and desired levels of sportiness. The 9/2 Belle Étoile as shown in the pictures above runs about $43000 and, as with all vehicles offered by Aether, it can be customized to the buyer’s tastes. The starlit experience of the 1987 Aether 9/2 Belle Étoile awaits you at your nearest Aether showroom.

The 1987 Eagle Stallion Turbo!

With it’s short wheelbase, sport tuned suspension and stylish looks, Eagle’s new Stallion is fit to compete with the best Germany and Japan can throw out! The Turbo trim throws out the old 5.0L V8 and instead uses Eagle’s compact 2.3L turbocharged inline 4, producing 201 horsepower and 194 lb-ft of torque. Crucially, this powertrain weighs about 100 pounds less than the V8 (total weight 2911 lbs) allowing for improved handling and also better fuel economy. This engine is mated to a 5 speed manual and LSD to a solid rear axle. The front has MacPherson struts which have been tuned for optimal cornering ability.

The Stallion also comes in both hatchback and convertible variants (convertible pictured), and this specific car has an optional sport appearance package with stripes and “Turbo” badging. The convertible top is power operated and the interior is well furnished with burgundy cloth, power windows, a boost gauge, and a premium cassette player. Overall the new for 1987 Eagle Stallion Turbo is a new, more modern take on the old pony car, and has a real chance to hang with its overseas competition with its low price.

  • MSRP: $13,000
  • 201 hp, 194 lb-ft
  • 0-62: 7.5 sec
  • Quarter mile: 15.55 sec
  • Top speed: 141 mph
