2004 Puck Krieger GT

With a focus on driving fun rather than outright speed and acceleration, the Krieger GT bridges the gap between the base six-cylinder model and the rocket-fast turbocharged TRS. A 4.6 litre V8 produces a healthy 345 horsepower, giving it a top speed of 263 km/h and a 0-100 run of 6.3 seconds, among the quickest in its class. Comfort is also a strong point, with plush leather seats and satelite navigation.

TARSKE OB832 SL

In 1995, Tarske released their first SUV, the OD525. It sold well and in 2002 the OB832 was announced as it's successor.

Bigger and better equipped while still being under $30k, this new model replaces the old flat-4 for an updated version of the MPE V8 seen in the luxury sedans of the brand.

The SL trim released in 2004 sacrifices some off-road capabilities in exchange for maximum comfort, offering a luxury interior for an affordable price.

With a shorter submission window and few entries in so far, I want to lay out a pair of options on how to proceed. I’ll let it go to a vote:

Extend?
  • Run as originally planned with whatever turnout comes in, so no one needs to remain in stable when the big update hits beta
  • Extend deadline by one week, allowing already entered contestants to continue working and resubmit later so they are not disadvantaged

2004 Llewellyn Albany Ultimate AWD

Lore

First introduced in 2003 at the Detroit Auto Show, the third generation Albany sports brand new sheetmetal and a brand new platform, with 4-wheel fully independent suspension, strengthened frame rails and improved rigidity. Also new is the powertrain, a 4.6L 32-valve, all-alloy V8 producing 320 horsepower and 345lb-ft of torque, an updated version of the Advance8 engine family first introduced in 2000. It comes mated to a 6-speed automatic with CommandShift manual control, and a GPS link that adjusts shift programming on the fly based on the current road conditions. Power is routed through Llewellyn’s third generation SuperControl full-time all-wheel drive system with a torque-sensing limited slip differential, rendering it capable of reaching 60 miles per hour in just 6.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 155 miles per hour.

Top trim Ultimate models, like the one shown here, also feature Llewellyn’s second generation continuously variable adaptive air suspension with 3 cockpit adjustable modes, load leveling rear suspension, a 6.5 inch center display with navigation, XM radio, 16 way adjustable driver and passenger seats with 3 person memory, heating and ventilation with 3-stage massage function, Homelink, passive infared night vision, adaptive cruise control, a heads-up display, a power tilt/telescoping and heated steering wheel, a powered rear liftgate, a power-folding second row, a cooled center storage compartment, and 3 years of Llewellyn’s Concierge service, which provides free loaner vehicles when your Albany is being serviced, exclusive discounts from select businesses, and OnStar services, which can dispatch aid in the event of an accident.

All told, this Albany is the range-topping Ultimate AWD trim, painted in Stone Blue Metallic with the Onyx Black and Slate semi-aniline leather interior, all for $30,000.

2004 ひゆうんざり Obsidian

❀ Lore

The 2004 ひゆうんざり(Hiyunzari) Obsidian is the essence of the brand’s pipeline from design concept to production vehicle. It is the production version of the Yōtei HD concept from the 2002 Tokyo Motor show, a luxury offroader that blended rugged, go anywhere materials with minimalist, eccentric luxury that is key to the vehicles at the top of the Hiyunzari range. After the intervening years of rigorous product development, the Obsidian brings that blend to market with minimal changes from concept’s form. Matte cladding envelopes the lower third of the vehicle, curling around the wheel arches and rising in tendrils to the headlights and taillights. It also adorns the mirrors and most other features likely to bear the brunt of scrapes on rural trails. The rest of the body is finished in glittering mica paints. There is also a full offroad skidtray to protect the underside of the Obsidian and its supple air suspension from rocks and other debris. Minor modifications to the bumpers have been made for the lighting requirements of the American market. The aggressive, cat-like look of the front end hints at the power plant of the Obsidian: the 4ZZFE V8. It’s a smooth, powerful dohc beast making 307 hp from just under 4 L. It uses Hiyunzari’s Dual VVTL-i system to manage both banks of cams to deliver plenty of low end torque while retaining overall power and fuel efficiency. This refined engine is paired with a reliable yet high-tech 5 speed automatic, which has settings for most terrain types and reduces overall understeer by electronically modulating how much of the Obsidian’s power is sent to the front and rear wheels. These two factors combined produce a quick and surprisingly nimble suv that tends to feel closer to a sedan in terms of dynamics.

The interior of the Hiyunzari Obsidian is luxurious and subtle in showing how tech-laden it is. The seats and padded surfaces are covered in supple fine grained leather and the center console and dash are finished in brushed aluminium and deeply polished cherry wood, reminiscent of vintage jet age TV consoles. Other than the addition of physical buttons instead of touch capacitive ones and plusher, more stable seats, the interior remains practically the same as the Yōtei HD concept. The onboard computer and entertainment system Hiyunzari co-developed with Sega, JS-I, is still there, complete with keyfob memory attachments that allow the Obsidian to recognize who is driving and save their seat position and other preferences. The center display screen is where the radio, back up camera, and satnav are displayed, navigable by the controller-esque buttons on the steering wheel or wirelessly with a secondary keyfob VIU. Even the ambient backlighting and translucent shift knob are preserved from the concept version, lending a futuristic air to the cabin and setting it apart from the heavier, more traditional designs of other brands. Overall the 2004 Hiyunzari Obsidian is, like its name suggests, a rugged and aggressive yet strikingly refined and luxurious SUV that gives a buyers a taste of a hopeful future.

2004 Fischer Humpback

Lore

The boldest Fischer has ever gone. First unveiled in 2003, the Humpback is a 7-seated behemoth made for upper-class families that turns heads due to its simple, yet somewhat grandiose profile. Thanks to Fischer’s new variable valve timing technology, its 4-liter V8 powerhouse pumps out 344 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. Paired with the exquisite 6-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive system, and Fischer’s first ever limited slip differential, the giant propels itself from 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds and up to 167 mph, all while keeping fuel consumption relatively low. Thanks to the new premium mufflers, its battle cries won’t be loud enough to wake the kids, at least not the ones inside.

Speaking of inside, the Humpback’s interior is the real wonder. Three rows of leather seats with heating, ventilation, and massage features as well as leg rests, fully foldable third and second row seats, dual sunroofs, a spacious center storage with cooling, a CD-compatible entertainment system, ambient speakers, manually selectable drive modes, and other features that can’t fit here, all for $29,300. Too much? Maybe, but is that really a bad thing?
