CSR 170 - All about the numbers

The Brief

The year is 2005, somewhere in concrete financial jungle of Frankfurt am Main.

Stefan Bauer (29) is one of the top accountants at “VeryBigInternetCompany.com”. For years, he has been driving an ageing Renwoo he bought used near the end of the old millennium. But with its growing list of faults and a fresh promotion to “Level 4 Accountant”, he is finally looking for something newer to carry him from his house on the outskirts of the city to Frankfurt’s busy financial center.

Stefan is looking for a cheap, reliable car that costs him as little as possible to own and run, while still being comfortable enough to drive every day. His commute is mostly from his house to his work of place in the city, which consists of speed-restricted urban autobahns and dense city traffic.

He is not a flashy guy. He thinks the large sedans and SUVs driven by many of his coworkers are oversized and not worth the money. Still, he is fascinated by the flashy new technology that has become increasingly common since the early 2000s.

What are Stefan’s needs?

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

Running costs:

He wants his new car to be as fuel-effician as possible and is willing to pay extra to get that extra bit of mileage out of his car. However the first servicebill should not bankrupt him.
Stefan will calculate the Running cost for 5 years and his yearly commute (See Rules for exact costs)

:star: :star: :star: :star:

Total Cost:

Stefan understands that you have to spend money to make money. He is not simply looking for the cheapest car with the smallest engine. He wants something nice, which keeps him more money for his investments at the end of the month. If that means spending a bit more upfront to save money in the long run, he is perfectly fine with that.

Styling:

Stefan works a prestigious job in one of the most prestigious areas of the city. While his taste may be somewhat conservative, that does not mean he wants to drive something completely dull. If a car really catches his attention, he may choose it over another car with similar features.

:star: :star: :star:

Driving Experience:

It should be a neutral driving experience, no need for high speeds or high speed cornering.
Stefan will be mostly driving city speeds with maybe a further trip twice every month.

:star: :star:

Space:

Stefan doesnt need anything big. A small hatchback, sedan or coupe should be enough to furfill his needs for commute and getting stuff from a supermarket. He can perfectly survive with only 2 seats

Rules

Game version: Stable

Model & Trim Year: 2005

Engine & Variant Year: 2005

Bodystyle: No Convertables, preferable 2-door

Prefered seatcount: 2-5

Techpool: 50M combined

ATS (Advanced Trim Settings): Within reason

Total car cost: Softlimit at 25k
(Anything over will receive extra scruteing, anything under will be an easier sell)

Tyres: Width ending in 5

Safety: 45 min, ABS is required

Yes you will need a catalysator, no race parts

Special rulings:

Fuel:

Fuelcosts will be calculated with these averages of 2005 prices:

“Normal” - High avaliablity - ~1.19 per litre - 91 RON
“Super” - High avaliablity - ~1.21 per litre - 95 RON
“Super Plus” - Normal avaliablity - ~1.41€ per litre - 98 RON
“LPG” - Low availiabilty - ~0.56€ per litre - 112 RON

((Yes you can use LPG, but it really needs to be worth the extra hassle of getting it, as only certain fuel stations are carrying it. For the calculation this means a 10% in driven distance and a 15% increase in service cost for the specialized parts))

Running Costs

The running cost will account for:

Fuelcosts [1]
Service costs [1] [2]
Roadtax per year [3]
Insurance [4]

[1] Calculated for a yearly distance of ~10.000km over 5 years

[2] First 2 years not counting because of warrenty.

[3] Table for Roadtax. Roadtax is calculated by ([Enginesize in cc])/100 x [WES bracket]

Roadtax brackets

WES11 - 6.75€
WES10 - 7.36€
WES9 - 15.13€
Anything below - 21.07€

Example: 1.3L car with WES10 → (1300cc/100) x 7.36€ = 95.68€

[4] Based on ingame calcs

You can find this under Detailed Statistics > Minor Stats > Running Costs (Thanks @chiefzach2018 )

For Demographic choose whatever as it doesnt change the insurance costs
For Country choose Gasmes

1 or 2 questions.

Anything on the wheelbase?

And does running costs/any other need/priority include Reliability, Safety and Prestige, just asking as the current list seems a little small to me, and those things sound like they’d ordinarily have some importance.

No set wheelbase, i dont think that is needed. A 4m SUV might not be the answer for Stefan.

Reliabity yes, that is set in the total running cost. If your service bill is half of another car, but it breaks down twice as much, you are not really gaining anything.

Safety and Prestige are more of a “More is better” stat

are these the normal unleaded that’s in game? If so, regular is 91 RON. Only fuels that are 92 RON are E27 Ethanol blend and Leaded Regular. Would be good to clarify which fuels you’re actually using here.

Given the timeframe in which this CSR is set, that component should be a 3-way unit of some sort.

Should it? Weren’t Euro emissions of this era just performance-based?

Emissions everywhere have been chiefly performance-based. Cat mandates are a weird artifact of the pre-WES times, and/or an attempt at forcing realistic designs even when the performance is attainable otherwise.

Catless WES11 is pretty dang hard though, and ends up compromising your car a lot.

Regarding seating configurations, even a 2-seat one (comprised of a single row of 2 full-sized seats) might be acceptable given that the Smart Fortwo is among the listed aesthetic inspirations.

Also, I think Advanced Trim Settings should be used in moderation.

In the meantime, I’m trying out some test mules to see how well they could hold up under scrutiny.

@Portalkat42 Fixed. Good thing i looked up the ingame RON for LPG but not Normal gas

@abg7 Will add the ATS clause

45 or higher? That’s the bare minimum required for Gasmea - which is why I swapped an aluminum chassis/body with an AHS steel chassis and treated steel bodywork for my first test mule (and it saved $5k to boot, even though fuel consumption and 0-60 acceleration times went up). I did, however, have to tweak the rest of the car accordingly - but I hope it ends up being closer to the VW Lupo (which is listed as an aesthetic inspiration) as a result.

Traction and stability control aren’t explicitly required (especially given the required model/trim years of 2005), but Stefan would appreciate those for the sake of drivability.

I think the main reason there’s a safety floor is to rule out true kei cars and stuff with fiberglass. Annoyingly we don’t have plastic as a panel option, which was definitely possible in this grouping of cars(smart fortwo being one of them to use it).

Polymer plastics as a panel material option were present in some earlier Kee engine builds, but were removed for being redundant (fiberglass simulates that option quite well now anyway).

I’ve only just started throwing some ideas together for this yesterday but I can’t help but think the tech pool and/or the budget are quite high. You can throw an awful lot of tech pool and quality at your car to use up the budget.

The first test mule I made did end up using as much techpool as the budget allowed, with generous use of positive quality across the board - but it still ended up at $20k AMU (80% of the soft upper limit) all-up.

Techpool is in a fine place imo because a lot of the hyper-miler set of cars we very R&D heavy. Dropping drag coefficients takes a lot of time and money.

I’m assuming the MPG figure is based on UK MPG instead of US MPG, but even so, it’s an incredibly high value, especially by contemporary standards.
