Dead HDD Causing Automation/BeamNG export issues

I’ve tried looking for a solution to this specific issue, but it seems I’ve found myself in a strange edge-case here. A couple months back, my hard drive with most of my games installed on it died. It was extracted, but some games have needed some weird adjustments here and there when reinstalled. Some work with a simple install, uninstall and reinstall, others need registry key edits, others still require some other niche fix. This one stumps me.

I’ve installed Automation and BeamNG on a different drive, and noticed Automation is still trying to export cars to the BeamNG folder on the old, dead drive. I followed posts on the support board that suggest editing a file in the BeamNG install folder, but Automation continues to look for the old BeamNG install folder on the dead drive that no longer exists. I’ve tried searching through registry keys and found nothing that would point Automation to the correct directory. There may be a key i haven’t checked yet, of course, but I haven’t found it. I’ve verified the integrity of both games, and it does not seem to fix the issue either. It’s possible I may be missing something here, but I haven’t seen any other support tickets refer to this strange export issue from what I gather.

In short:

  • HDD died which contained BeamNG and Automation install folders.
  • HDD has been extracted and recycled.
  • BeamNG and Automation have both now been installed in new folders.
  • Automation keeps searching for BeamNG’s install directory in the dead drive when trying to export a car to BeamNG.
  • Since it keeps looking in the dead drive, it cannot find BeamNG’s new install directory on a different drive to scoop up the file in that directory that points Automation to the correct export folder.
  • Manually glancing through registry keys and editing BeamNG’s install directory to the correct directory has not fixed this issue, but I may have missed a key in my manual search (this has, however, fixed an issue with BeamNG not booting at all)
  • Both games have had the integrity of their game files validated by Steam, problem persists

I apologize if this issue was posted before, but I tried using as many different terms in my searches to find an issue similar to mine with no avail. Thank you in advance for any advice/help! (and i apologize if I’ve submitted an issue that already has a known solution!)

The only way to fix this properly is to do a full wipe and reinstall of both Automation and BeamNG, including - ideally - a wipe of your AppData\Local folders for both Automation and BeamNG. This will make you lose all of your progress in both games, bear in mind.

Aha, this worked! Thankfully, I didn’t have much progress to lose since I play Automation and BeamNG primarily for the sandboxes each game provides for me to play in, but I’m super glad I can continue making and exporting cars! Didn’t even lose any of my existing Automation cars (though i did back them up just in case), I just gotta re-export them is all. Thank you for the help!
