For a while I’ve been wanting to play a multiplayer game with lots of members of the community, but I just don’t know of any good multiplayer games that are free/cheap and would appeal to a lot of people here.
Anyone got any ideas?

Well, Idk know what you consider good, though here are two games that I enjoy that are cheap and free. Cheap is OpenRCT2, an open source recreation of RCT2, while the open source version itself is free, it requires the original game for art assets, hence why cheap (it’s on GoG for like $10 I believe)
The free game is OpenTTD, while it doesn’t quite tickle everyone’s fancy, it is indeed a free game with multiplayer that I enjoy at least.

We’ve discussed OpenTTD a bit already elsewhere. It’s a good game that I’m sure a lot of people would like but I don’t think it’s a game that everyone can just pick up and learn with ease.

I barely have any multiplayer games but the ones I do have are pretty fun. Two that come to mind are Rocket League and CS:GO.

You guys are seeing it as being more difficult than it really is 
In the end it’s not much harder than automation itself.
It’s not like it was some kind of paradox interactive grand strategy game or something

Unfortunately a good free game is a rarity.
Hawken was pretty good before it was abandoned. The free Ghost In The Shell game on Steam is a pretty decent FPS… at least there are no pay-to-win elements. I’m still unsold on why a GITS game is a simple FPS, but that’s another discussion.
War Thunder looks amazing on paper, but the grind was intolerable for me when I tried it a few years back. If at least you didn’t have to pay “money” to repair your planes; then maybe. You start out with a late 30’s biplane with a 7.62mm peashooter. You can’t really do anything against even early-war BF-109s. Normally I’m a pretty decent pilot… but here I was just painfully outclassed every step of the way.
Crossout is an upcoming free-to-play game that really interests me. It was supposed to be released by the end of last month… but you guys know how that works. I’ll report back when it does get released. Currently the date is set at “Q2 2017”.
If only Automation had a co-op mode.
I’m not sure if Warframe is a multiplayer game.
Warframe is, but is very grindy, and only allows 4 person co-op
