Duplicating Engines?

Hi, I’m trying to do a simple task, which I think is already possible.

I made an engine, 1964, gave it a Family and Variant name, then I want to duplicate that engine (so I don’t have to copy its stats again).

Sandbox > Engines > Revise Engine

If I duplicate the Variant (car copy button) it works fine, this would serve my purpose, however, when I change the year (the basis for much of my duplication), the previous variant also changes its year?

I’d be more than happy to copy the family and not use variants, however the option doesn’t seem available?

In the previous version I did this so often, I’d save and engine, then save as to duplicate.

Maybe this is related to the car year issues I saw, but in the mean time, where are the engines stored so I can manually copy the files and create duplicates that way?

It’s not yet possible to duplicate engine families. Same with car models. Only car trims and engine variants are possible to duplicate, and production year changes made to either effects the parent, and any siblings. I believe it will be changed to allow such in the future, but not yet. The same is true of trims.

In the grand scheme of things, when playing in tycoon mode (the actual end-goal of the game), changing a year won’t really matter, however. Time progresses, and the years go by, so you can’t travel backwards in time. Either you’ll be using last year’s (or last decade’s) engine, or you’ll be reworking them for this years cars. Sandbox mode, is a different story, IMHO. But I am not a developer, so, yeah…

It still matters in the tycoon mode. If you have a 1947 car and 1947 engine, and the year progresses to 1948, you want to have to be able to update the carburetor and have it make use of 1948 engine stats (the passive increase that occurs year by year). You aren’t designing a new engine from scratch and retooling your factories every year for the same car body. That would only be if you changed the cylinder configuration, block size, or head type.

Well, that is what I meant, actually. Once 1947 is over, you’ll probably be advancing to a 1948 engine, even if you’re only advancing technology for minimal R&D costs to take advantage of what you learned the year before (tech pool). In other words, you probably won’t be using the 1947 engine again. So, changing the year to 1948 and overwriting the 1947 engine won’t really matter in tycoon mode. Of course, you can still use the 1947 engine as-is, if you don’t change the year. Nothing prevents you from using a 1947 engine in a 1948 chassis! (except maybe laws in some areas) The OP was talking about losing the 1947 engine(s) by changing the year forward to the newer year.

Ok. I think I get the general idea of what you’re saying now. lol

If you take a look at this thread: automationgame.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5838 the Devs did say they will be adding year changes (phew!), but had to disable it temporarily to give us something that works for now.
