Engine development & testing

Hello

I’ve been thinking a lot about the Engine Designer in the final game.

Would it be any costs involved in developing and testing engines? Or will you be provided with free parts and unlimited dyno-runs without it costing anything, to test all possible engine configurations, and do as much fine-tuning as you want? I would think there is a considerable cost involved in developing an engine. And what about investments into adjusting the production facilities according to new engines?

Is this something you have been thinking of, or have planned for?

I personally would have liked it to be a little restrictive, so that you would maybe need to buy/fabricate parts before being able to test an engine configuration. Those parts could have a lifespan, allowing several dyno-runs on any applicable engine, and after it’s depleted you would need new similar parts. This way you should plan a little before testing new configurations which you do not have purchased/fabricated parts for. And there could also be a cost per dyno-run (fuel, destroyed parts, etc).

I think this will add a little bit more depth and realism to the final game.

What do you think?

Indeed this will be implemented in the Engine Designer if nothing unforeseen gets between us and that goal.
There needs to be costs involved, otherwise it’d be extremely unrealistic. We also thought about having a free-revving mode for engine testing such that you quickly can abort the test when you start hearing some engine knocking or wicked noises from the valve train - before serious damage is done and you need to pay the full replacement cost (and time!).

This kind of thing will be optional though, and is probably a good thing to have in a difficulty-options menu  some people will find such things awesome, others totally annoying.
Cheers!

Sounds good! The harder difficult settings needs to be realistic an challenging

I can see myself just having started my first car company. I immediately start developing my first engine, which needs to meet my strict specifications. I try different combinations of parts, do much fine-tuning, and a lot of testing. And i end up finding out that I’m out of money long before finishing anything :stuck_out_tongue:
