Nine years into its journey, the Benetsch Lerance remains the GT of the Future. The 4.5-liter water-cooled V8 now produces 306 horsepower courtesy of port injection with an aggressive intake plenum; a limited-slip differential and a new, optional anti-spin system, along with top-of-the line 255-section tires, ensure total compliance at all speeds.
The Lerance is as much a worker as it is a warrior: It carries four in comfort and total, airbag-guaranteed security, and has both front and rear cargo compartments. The four-speed automatic transmission with an electronically regulated lockup torque converter guarantees maximum power on demand and maximum efficiency at all other times.
Yours today for AM$24,700… Or you could buy a front-engined competitor from Somervell and watch yourself rapidly grow old in everybody else’s eyes. Your call.
Wait, I’m stupid, it was 48 hours left.
Sorry for the mistake.
FYI @Danicoptero light assignments in the OB don’t work all that well so it would be wise not to judge that too harshly.
1985 Kiyume Lynx ZingR Turbo
Shouldn’t this be “the engine at the wrong end”?
I guess, but I liked the sound of this title better
Damn all these entries are so good
By the mid 1980s, Midlands was well known as a maker of performance sedans. The Ceres was competing amongst the likes of BMW M3 and Mercedes 190 E. The Cygnus was threatening Audi and Lancia in Groupe B. Even though Midlands was doing quite well for itself, the engineers were starting to itch for something that would draw upon the company’s experimental roots. This yearning is how the Midlands Elysium R-Type was born. Originally conceived as a prototype test bed for the RX trim, the R-Type was a special order only package that was mostly marketed through word of mouth at racetracks and through a select few enthusiast magazines. The specification consists of a base model Elysium GX sedan which is upgraded with sport seats, sport suspension, traction management system, and the 6.2 L DOHC V8 from the GTC. This produces an extra lightweight, very fast, and relatively inexpensive executive sedan without the external drama of most sportscars. At first, you would have to have to hope your order went through properly and would be “corrected” by regional dealership clerks who would assume you had filled out the form incorrectly. After the first 500 or so R-Types were produced though, special training was given for dealers to make a follow-up phone call to anyone who ordered an R-Type, asking if they wanted “the badge” or not. Receiving this call let the customer know that their car was identified as being an R-Type and would let them choose between using the standard GX badge or an R-Type badge. Regardless of the choice, all Elysium R-Types were given the trim designation RT in their VIN numbers. The whole R-Type program was the beginning of Midlands offering factory “sleeper” builds and their practice of teasing future special editions through the enthusiast community.
The Elysium R-Type itself looks like a standard GX on the outside, with no extra intake or hood vents. The engine instead is fed from below through NACA ducts built into the under tray shielding. This does result in the engine running slightly hotter than a typical GX, but that’s only under extreme conditions. The choice of a 5 speed manual in an almost 5 m long car may feel like an odd choice, but the R-Type is intended as a driver focused performance sedan, not a cushy land yacht. The less comfortable nature of the interior also belies the R-Type’s true intentions, with the sport seats actively holding the driver in place instead of a plush captain’s chair. This has resulted in some very confused automotive journalists giving it a relatively low comfort score before treating the R-Type how it’s supposed to be: a brutal sleeper missile with a 180 mph top speed and 5.22 0-60 time, all on standard road tyres. Due to its low production volumes, the Elysium R-Type has become a sought after version and has been faked many times over.

In the mid 1980s, Leclerc Auvtomobilai, Velkaristan’s state owned car manufacturer threw a major curveball. To get a rear engine sports car from a brand known for making big lumbering land yachts, beloved family cars and mediocre at best hatchbacks was completely unbelievable, fantasy even. But, it happened. With rising competition from other automakers, Leclerc, with it’s vast lineup of sedans, wagons, and hatchbacks wanted in on the sports car market and their answer came in the form of the S38. The S38 was a radical departure from conventional Leclerc; the engine was in the rear, six cylinders instead of eight, turbocharged, unibody frame with aluminum panels. It’s V6 was a relatively normal 3.8l unit found in the mid range trims of 45 Series sedan, but it featured turbochargers, a first for any Leclerc, making it their most powerful 6 cylinder car. It topped out at 185 mph, and hit 60 in 5 seconds. The S38, while very successful, was discontinued by Leclerc after the 1988 model year thanks to financial problems and the eventual privatization of the company. In the years since, it has become a relatively sought after sports vehicle for its feeling of uniqueness.
