The Ascenta sold best as a 5 door estate as it provided ample room for cargo and passengers, with an original MSRP price tag of £4,095 (£12,090 in todays money) it was good value for money. Standard equipment included PAS (Power Assisted Steering), radio and cassette, folding rear seats, air conditioning, drivers airbag and cloth seat trim.
The American specification Ascenta were only available as 5 door estates or 4 door saloons, and were sold with 4C-A engines and 4 speed automatic gearboxes, with the 5 speed manual gearbox optionally available on the 4 door saloon.
Our 1987 Ascenta ELX 1.8 with only 17830 miles on the odometer.
The range-topping ELX 1.8 trim recieved a 4C-GLU between 1987 and 1992 producing 104hp, with either a 5 speed manual gearbox or a 3/4 speed automatic gearbox. Optional equipment included roof bars, a tow hook, alloy wheels, a spare wheel and more.
A not-so-distant relative of the Ascenta, the Hakaru Gemini was a light, front-wheel drive sports coupe with enough room for a family of four and the weekly shop.
Starting production in 1989, the Hakaru Gemini was manufactured and sold by Hakaru between 1989 and 1996. Production numbers totalled approximately 400,000 cars, with 2 body styles - the common 2 door coupe and the rare Japanese exclusive 4 door saloon. All Gemini were front-wheel drive, with a Limited Slip Differential as standard.
The Gemini sold well, as it was a cheap and affordable sportscar with an original MSRP price tag of £5,626 (£14,090 in todays money). Standard equipment included PAS (Power Assisted Steering), radio and cassette, air conditioning, drivers airbag, cloth seat trim, and alloy wheels unless it was a Gi trim, which had steel wheels as standard in Japan.
The American specification Gemini were only available with 4C-A engines, however the sportier USDM GT-S trim had a spoiler and 15 inch alloys as standard.
This particular Gemini has covered a miniscule 6700 miles from new.
Two trims were available for the Gemini in Europe and America - The GXi and GLi. Both cars used the same 4C-GLU 108hp, with either a 5 speed manual gearbox or 4 speed automatic gearbox.
In Japan, an base model Gemini Gi was sold with a 4C-A carburetted engine, exclusively as a 4 door saloon.
As the sportier twin of the Ascenta, the Gemini may not have been the fastest thing on the roads at the time, but it was very cheap to buy and run, and turned out to be quite a looker as well.
The Carica has always been a fan favourite, and with an original MSRP price tag of £2,055 (£11,867 in todays money), it became the golden standard for affordable motoring in style. It was only available as a 4 door saloon, however it excelled in its class despite its small size, with a fuel efficient 3R-A Inline-four engine producing 73hp linked to a 4 speed manual gearbox.
In 1981, the Carica started to be sold with a 4C-IA high-torque engine alongside the 3R-A, until this generation of Carica stopped production in 1982.
In Japan, a special partnership with Paonner corporation gave birth to a special run of Carica Deluxe with in-car radio systems.
This car has been restored from a barn find state to brand new condition by our professional team of technicians working at our garage.
A series of trim levels were sold, starting from the S, C, SE, SR, and finishing at the Deluxe, as seen above. The SR and Deluxe were only sold at Hakaru Auto Store, a seperate dealership chain dedicated to more expensive cars.
In Japan and Hong Kong, these cars would often be bought for taxi use, the MSRP price tag of £5,600 (£17,079 in todays money) was very attractive for taxi drivers. 5F Inline-six engines were the winners choice, as they offered smooth performance and fairly low maintenance costs for long-distance trips. The 5F-EG, 5F-LX and 5F-IEC all gave solid results in day-to-day taxi use.
Leather seats and rear window curtains were standard equipment across all Contribu Super Deluxe, alongside radio cassette, electric front windows and an optional passenger/driver privacy screen could be installed for an extra ¥58,400 at most dealerships across Japan.
This Contribu Super Deluxe served as a taxi in Shinagawa in its past life.
Two trim levels were given to the Hakaru Contribu - Super Comfort and Super Deluxe, with the latter being a more luxury-oriented car than the Super Comfort.
This car was also the first car from Hakaru with an optional satellite navigation system, which led the way for higher models in the lineup.
The previous owner of our Sonda seemed to have put RS sideskirts onto their SE-G model.
The Sonda RS is very popular amongst young teens for its low insurance rates but punchy 2BE-EGT turbocharged engine and sporty looks.
The most common trim level sold between 1997-2002 was the C package - Here are a few offerings available on each trim level

The robust 1CZ family of engines was designed in mind for the Astura Grands, a 1.8 litre inline 4 producing 98hp and plenty of torque to carry 5 passengers and cargo, or 7 passengers comfortably. Carbon emissions were reduced through efficient means, VVT tuning and a three-way catalytic converter, promoting green driving.

With big fanfare, a CVT option was introduced in the 1999 facelift of the Grands, which was marketed as EasierDrive, making driving easier for elderly people.
