Hot Hatch Eco Challenge 1!

Welcome to The Hot Eco Hatch Challenge. Your challenge is to build a hot hatch in the year 1982 that will totally redefine the entire class while still being reasonably economical, here are the rules;

  1. Must be in 1982
  2. Must have 3 doors
  3. Must not have any more than 4 cylinders
  4. Must achieve more than 12.5 mpg (UK)
  5. Must have less than 200 emissions
  6. Must have more than 140 bhp
  7. Must be FWD
  8. Must have a 5-Speed Manual Transmission
  9. Must cost less than $30,000 total
  10. Max capacity: 2500cc
  11. No turbos
  12. Be as creative with fixtures and body deformations as you can it needs to be eye catching.

Let the challenge BEGIN!

The deadline is 1st January 2016 at 8:30 AM GMT.

How are things going to be scored? Are we racing? 30K is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much for a hatchback in 1982, 6-10K is much better IMO. Production unit cap? Service costs? We need to know all these details. Also, at least in my opinion, is is nice when the hosts post multiple measurements for stats, ie your 12.5mpg (UK) should also have the US and L/100 equivalent posted, makes it easier for everyone so they dont need to constantly change their options around.

Also, you are going to REALLY struggle to get under the 200 emissions limit in 1982 with carbs and the two way catalyst IF it is even possible. And why are you letting it run till next year? That is very stupid, 2-3 weeks at MOST otherwise you might get caught in an update or people just loose interest.

Another hot hatch challenge… hmm…

Over two month deadline? Way too long IMO

Deadline changed to November 27th at 4:00 pm GMT
Emissions limit is 300 (easily reachable if injection and three way cat is used)

12.5 mpg uk-10.4 mpg US-22.6 l/100km

price limit total is now $20k

How will the cars be judged? Considering the awful fuel economy these will be racing cars, right? Also 20k is the total cost or the price indicated on the market screen?

i think before taking submission… maybe you’ll be better off discussing the rules first??

Leonardo, these cars will be judged on the mean average of all the numbers achieved except engine capacity, so the calculation will look like this: economy+ emissions+ power+ price= initial score then divide by 4 to get the final score and whoever gets the highest final score wins so you must send a screenshot at the end of the trim section and the market screen of your entry to me via this forum for it to be counted. The price will be the one on the market screen for Archana. Entries will start to be accepted from today until 1 hour before the deadline.

So higher price is better? Are you sure it wouldn’t be a better idea to include a few other variables to the calculation, like the drivability, sportiness, comfort, prestige and safety scores?

Leonardo, yes it is until the price limit as a hot hatch is a really expensive vehicle (so that ‘irresponsible’ new drivers will not buy them) e.g. the new Honda Civic Type R costs from around £30,000 in the UK, that’s why the original price limit was $30,000 and I will reconsider the calculation so that there will be 2 different calculations: one that should have lower numbers and one that should have higher numbers so it would look like this;

1- Economy+ Price+ Power+ Drivability+ Sportiness+ Prestige+ Safety then divide by 6= initial score
2- Emissions+ Comfort then divide by 2= Final Score and overall judgement of the vehicle

comfort is in the lower numbers category because hot hatches are supposed to have hard sporty suspension and therefore comfort is not a huge deal to the manufacturers.

I can’t wait to see your entries and I wish you all the best in making them.
