Kungliga Automobilfabriken AB (Royal Automobile Factory Ltd.) was started in 1943 in the city of Trelleborg, Sweden.

The company markets cars in most car segments but are most known for their MB muscle car series and the KPB small car series.

Kungliga Automobilfabriken AB is also known for using a lot of decorative chrome on all their cars, no matter if it’s a small city car or full size luxury sedan.

The MB is a Swedish muscle car manufactured by Kungliga Automobilfabriken AB. The first model was introduced in 1964 with the purpose to compete with the Ford Mustang that was to be released in 1964 and with future pony and muscle cars that were to be released in the late 60s. Thanks to the MB’s popularity, the car is still in production and “there are no plans to cease production of the MB”, according to the CEO.

The car is labeled as MBXXX, where x has numbers that show the displacement of the engine. If the car is equipped with a 4.6 liter engine, the car would be named the MB460. If the car is equipped with a V8, there’s often a V8 badge on the rear end of the car.

The first generation MB was introduced in 1964 and quickly gained popularity in media due to the excessive usage of chrome and due to the fact that it was considerably cheaper than the anticipated Ford Mustang. The list price for a MB with a 4.6L V8 was set at 1643$ while the Mustang had a list price of 2368$. The slightly smaller V8 also produced one horsepower more than the Mustang’s engine.

The MB was offered with either a 3.5L 3C-9190V-1964 V6 or a 4.6L 4C-9091V-1964 V8. The buyer could also choose a convertible model.

The second generation MB was introduced in 1969, right after the first generation MB was put out of production that year.

The design was altered to give the MB a more contemporary look and the side chrome strips going from the front to the rear were kept and every trim now has a rear wing.

The wheelbase length of the second generation MB was increased from 2.63m to 2.83m and the overall length of the car increased from 4.56m to 5.12m. The second generation MB has an above average size for a muscle car but this made it possible to increase trunk size and cabin space.

The second generation MB was criticized for having worse handling the the first generation MB and the engines from the previous generation are available in this car as well as the new 4C-9898V-1969 5.9L V8. The 5.9L V8 was rated at 379HP and was available in the MB590 Super V8

When the 1973 oil crisis started, sales of the second generation MB started declining due to the car’s awful fuel economy rating combined with increasing fuel costs. The car was put out of production in 1975.

The third generation MB was introduced in 1975. The blocky design from the second generation MB was mostly kept but the car once again went through a change in wheelbase length and overall length. The car is slightly shorter now, at 4.96m and a 2.68m wheelbase. The size reduction was done to reduce weight and improve the fuel economy due to increasing crude oil prices.

Every engine except the 5.9L V8 received an upgrade in order to improve reliability and fuel economy. They are all slightly detuned in order to further improve fuel economy and all engines except the 5.9L V8, even the ones running on leaded fuel, can run on 91 RON regular quality unleaded fuel should leaded 92 RON fuel not be available.

For the US market, only the 3.5L V6 and 4.6L V8 are available due to the requirement of a catalytic converter for all cars of model year 1975 or newer. The US market did not get the 5.9L V8 because Kungliga Automobilfabriken did not upgrade it to run unleaded fuel and a catalytic converter. Kungliga Automobilfabriken stated that the decision to not upgrade the 5.9L V8 was made to reduce costs and keep the price of the MB as low as possible. Because of this, the MB590 was only available in Europe, where catalytic converters weren’t mandatory yet.

Every trim now comes equipped with an up-to-date entertainment system featuring an FM/AM capable radio receiver and an 8 track player. Every trim also has gas mono-tube dampers instead of the old twin-tube design and the handling of the third generation MB was now on par with the original MB.

Sales figures for the third generation MB were not as good as the previous generation but the car was still profitable. Production was scheduled to cease in 1981.

The fourth generation MB was introduced in 1981. It is often referred to as the 3rd gen MB face lift because of how similar it is to the previous generation MB. Some visual aspects were re-designed and the car got slightly longer, at 5.06m, for extra trunk and passenger space.

All engines, now including the 5.9L V8 which received an update, are capable of running 91RON fuel so consumers didn’t have to worry about fuel availability. One could use either 92RON leaded regular or 91RON unleaded regular, depending on fuel availability and whether or not the car is equipped with a catalytic converter.

Most of the features from the 3rd generation MB were re-used in the 4th generation one except the 5.9L V8, which received an upgrade. All trims have power steering as standard equipment now and the panels of the car have been treated to resist corrosion better.

The fourth generation MB introduced a turbocharged version of the 5.9L V8. It spools up at around 3000RPM and has a peak power of 441HP. It wasn’t available in the US because the engine lacked a catalytic converter.

The V6 version of the fourth generation MB wasn’t available on the US market. only the MB460 and MB590 were available there.

Production was scheduled to cease in 1986.

The fifth generation MB was introduced in 1986. Since unleaded fuel was becoming more and more common, all engines for the 5th generation MB have a modern three way catalytic converter so they can be sold on the US market without having to be fitted with a separate engine.

Even though it was a very competitive and relatively inexpensive car, the 5th generation MB received a lot of criticism for introducing very few technological upgrades. The chassis was up until now being made with galvanized steel instead of corrosion resistant steel, which has been around for a while. The car still uses a ladder chassis and the same cast iron engine blocks from the 60s and 70s, despite the fact that aluminum blocks and monocoque designs were being used more frequently.

The only actual tech improvements were fuel injection systems for the V8 engines and three way catalytic converters. The car was tested by a Swedish automotive magazine in early 1987 and the author wrote that “the new MB is fun, inexpensive and powerful but the lack of innovation in the tech department is disapointing. The sixth generation MB was introduced in 1992. Due to complaints about the cabin, especially the rear seats, having too little space, the car was once again lengthened to increase cabin space. The car now also has from Double wishbone suspension so that larger tires could be used on the front axle.

All trims now have a semi clad undertray and every engine features VoltJect fuel injections, a fuel injection system made by Kungliga Automobilfabriken and introduced in 1986. ABS brakes and power steering is standard equipment for all trims.

The V6 engine in the MB350 was supposed to use a carburetor even in the 6th gen MB but it was fitted with a VoltJect system to increase efficiency and power and to avoid being known as one of the few European car manufacturers that still used carburetors.

Production was scheduled to cease in 1998
