Evening is no stranger to the howls of the beasts that prowl these streets.

This is the story of the rise of a true street racer.

MIDNIGHT RACE HUNTER

SECRET SOCIETY X
SSX
闇壑夜äø

Break the boundaries of driving,

And feel the emotion of rhythm.

INTERMEDIA - the scenario

Japan, 199ā–ˆ

A high-class street racing group has recently made the rounds throughout the mountainous Yamitani (闇壑) region. Armed with their low-profile cars mounting expensive equipment, and completely-game changing racing abilities, they ruled the roads setting apparently untouchable lap records upon the treacherous tōge roads that lined the hills of these usually-quiet pathways. Noontime is always ready, after all, and it wouldnā€™t take long for resistance to commence against this sweeping force, but in a most unusual way that would be.

The presence of this group, and the defeat of an utmost important hashiriya to this club has prompted the arrival of a secret society, with a leader only known as X. Their goal remains simple, and can be outlined in a way that even a child would know.

To find the true, best racer of the Yamitani region, and defeat the club that had rampaged on these proud streets.

What better way to find this, than to encourage the formation of clans to participate in the hunt for the new Midnight Racer, to serve X and duel against another for the ultimate victory.

X has left her invitation to those willing, looking for people from the roads of the Nakagawa Pass (äøå·), Mt. Imori (é£Æę£®), the Haruyama Turnpike (ę˜„å±±), and Shiromine Line (ē™½å³°).

This marks the beginning of the Midnight Race Hunt, to find the best tōge driver of Yamitani.

Only one may hold the crown awarded by X.

The Ruleset

Cars and Equipment

In order to participate, you will first need a car. duh Youā€™re most likely not going to be driving bone-stock roadcars here, but you wonā€™t be driving track-only race cars with full blown GT300 bodykits and race tuned sus. Try to keep things reasonably road legal, though one or two hidden illegal modifications could pass.

Model/Trim Rules:

  • Trim Year cannot be set newer than 1999.
*you can go lower than this, in case you want to do some K-swapped 1967 mustang shenanigans idk tokyo drift is a distant memory by now
  • No limitations on body style, but avoid memery and open-wheelers.
*what consttutes as memery is subjective, ask me before hand and depending on my mood i will either reject or accept you sending in that turbo B18C-swapped Jeep Liberty
  • Maximum Cost - $42,000
  • Minimum Comfort score of 15 is required.
  • Minimum Safety of 30 is required.
  • Full carbon fibre is banned, but partial carbon panels are legal.
  • 2 full seats minimum required
  • A maximum of 4 aerodynamic fixtures are allowed (wings, lips, spoilers etc), and race diffusers are banned.
*honestly with some of the roads yā€™all will be driving on, you really wouldnā€™t want one
  • Semi-slicks are banned.
  • Maximum amount of quality is +5.
  • Minimum amount of safety quality is +0.
  • Car Tech Techpool maximum +0.
  • make an actual road going realistic car or something like that btw dont make a motorcycle or 6x6 or whatever i will destroy you

Engine Rules:

  • Variant year cannot be newer than 1999.
*feel free to mix and match years, in case you do want a Jeep PowerTech-swapped RX-7 or whatever the hell
  • Fuel type 98 RON/93 AKI
  • Catalytic Converter Required on cars introduced after 1975
  • Maximum amount of quality is +10.
  • Engine Tech Techpool maximum +7.

Misc Rules:

  • Minimum PWR of 0.175 (hp/kg)
*Note: Manually calculated is preferred, you can rely on in-game PWR if you want but i personally think itā€™s better to do it by hand. Just take horsepower and divide it by your weight, no need for extra transmission loss calculations or whatever, make it simple.
  • One spare car per team is allowed. This is completely optional, but could prove useful in the event a major mistake happens in the race and a car is thrown out of service.

Players and Clans

Clans are going to be the integral part of this challenge. Within these clans, people will form their bonds to improve their vehicles, and themselves as they learn from their experiences being with one another.

  • There will be eight (8) clans in total. Locations can be picked from the aforementioned roads by the players, or by the host if the clans are indecisive.
  • Clans need to have two players each. No more, no less.
  • Players are allowed a maximum of two characters each, and at least one character will be required.
  • One person/character of the clan must be appointed as the leader.
  • Before the beginning of the challenge, the clans will need to have a name decided for themselves.

  • No clan reservations. First come, first serve.
  • Submitting should be done as one clan, one person (doesnā€™t have to be the leader, but recommended they do the submitting, will DM me all the .car files of their clan. I will not accept individual submissions, and there will be NO Resubmissions except for special cases (Game update borking shit, etc). This means you canā€™t submit like 2 unfinished cars per clan just to get in.
  • Two clans will need to take up one mountain pass, and once a pass has been claimed by two clans, no other clans can claim that location.
  • Adding onto the above, since there are eight clan slots, once they are full, no one will be able to enter.
  • Roleplaying is not required, but encouraged even if it does not affect results.

???

Running the Event

The way Iā€™ll be running the main part of the event is that I have an unfortunately complex spreadsheet that roughly calculates the vehicleā€™s average speed throughout a course. In addition, a random number generator will be utilized for additional scenarios such as driver errors, or unexpected course movements, as the races are run on public roads after all.

The reason for there being eight clans is to simplify the battles into 2v2 races that go into a tournament bracket format. There will be no points for second place, and no loser brackets. Each clan battle will have an uphill and downhill race, where two players from each clan will need to be assigned either an uphill or downhill specialist role (1 role each). The course selected for the uphill/downhill battle will be randomized.

A few examples of how this would work would be:

example 1

Clan A from Imori is chosen to go against Clan C from Haruyama.

Uphill Specialists: Sora (Clan A) | Vincent (Clan C)
Downhill Specialists: Amelia (Clan A) | Yuri (Clan C)

The course selected for the Uphill is Haruyama Turnpike Inbound
The course selected for the Downhill is Mt. Imori

or

example 2

Clan D from Nakagawa is chosen to go against Clan C from Haruyama.

Uphill Specialists: Isaac (Clan D) | Vincent (Clan C)
Downhill Specialists: Suisei (Clan D) | Yuri (Clan C)

The course selected for the Uphill is Nakagawa Pass
The course selected for the Downhill is Nakagawa Pass

*The formatting will obviously be different and more legible, but you get the point

Following the downhill/uphill specialist battles, one clan member will need to be assigned as the ā€œJesterā€. The Jester will be doing both uphill and downhill battles at random, and will act as the tiebreaker in the event both teams reach a stalemate.

So the full examples would be:

example 3

Clan A from Imori is chosen to go against Clan C from Haruyama.

Uphill Specialists: Sora (Clan A) | Vincent (Clan C)
Downhill Specialists: Amelia (Clan A) | Yuri (Clan C)
Jester: Sora (Clan A) | Vincent (Clan C)

The course selected for the Uphill is Haruyama Turnpike Inbound
The course selected for the Downhill is Mt. Imori
The course selected for the Jester is Haruyama Turnpike Inbound (Downhill)

The Battle

The clans will battle one another in a single elimination format. Each battle will happen on a Saturday, every week. First will be the uphill battle, followed by the downhill battle. The Jester battle will be the tiebreaker battle if needed.

Two clans will first race against one another, followed by the next two. The two teams that emerge victorious from these battles will now go up against one another to determine the winning clan.

Depending on your Driveability and Sportiness levels, I will randomly generate a number which will be reduced from your speed. The chart for this is below.

image

Put simply, if your Driveability is in the 20-30 range, then I will generate a number from 1-20 that will be deducted from your average speed throughout the individual sectors. If it is in the 40-50 range, it will range from 1 to 10, and higher than that will range from 1 to 4. This also applies to sportiness, with the higher sportiness meaning a lower chance of getting a bad number.

As for rolls outside of stat-dependent ones, there will also be random event rolls that will be rather rare. I will generate a number from 1-20 for all cars that will determine whether or not a major mistake had happened.

If this mistake roll lands on a 20, a major mistake has happened, and I will then generate a number from 1 to 4 to determine the severity of the mistake, where 1-2 would be slight damage to the car (reduction in Driveability by 2 points), and 3-4 would be a crash where the car is taken out of the race, and the opponent automatically wins by default. The car will not be able to race for another week, and the character driving the car will need to use the backup (if present), if not, the Jester will need to go in place.

The format for the RNG elements will be: Sport, Drive, Mistake
The numbers are in order idk how to phrase this better help

As such:

ROLLS: (Sport, Drive, Mistake)
KATOU - 4, 5, 3 | 18, 5, 1 - DAISUKE

So the full format for the results will be similar to the following examples:

BATTLE EXAMPLE 1

CLAN A IMORI versus CLAN C HARUYAMA

ROLLS: (Sport, Drive, Mistake)

Roleplaying

Roleplaying, as said earlier, will not significantly affect the outcomes of the battles, but will be highly recommended to act in. Once your entries have been accepted, you can immediately begin posting your clan RPs, or whatnot.

As much as I donā€™t want to limit things, since I myself caused quite a headache for a certain someone in a certain challenge just this year (sorry Madrias), Iā€™ll have to limit some stuff people do, which basically just extends to stuff like donā€™t intentionally put yourself in a spot that will get your character arrested, or the race event getting discovered by the feds or whatever. also try to be human (not that you canā€™t, just that it might be a tad awkward having kitsunes and onis on the toge)

Pretty much no character is going to be dying in this race, but as this is some high-paced dangerous mountain road action, an injury or two might perhaps happen due to a driver error (like how I mentioned earlier with those funky RNG rolling thingys), but most of these will be stuff that can be resolved in the pacing I have planned.

In-game time goes as fast as time relative to us (or real time i guess), so the battles happen in the roleplay one week after another, and on a Saturday as well. This should allow people to retain a good sense of pace without having it feel like 3 years have gone by in our time but 3 hours have gone by in the RP.

For the interactive environment, you can hit me up with a DM, as Iā€™ve basically got some aspects of the setting laid down, otherwise you can also refer to the next section for some basics about the location set in.

The Setting

Yamitani Prefecture (闇壑ēœŒ, Yamitani-ken) is a fictional prefecture in Japan. It is near the capital region by the coast and is known for being very mountainous.

Amatsukame (天äŗ€åø‚) is the capital of Yamitani Prefecture, the main historical district of Yamitani featuring the Yamitani Castle, and the main road going into it is the Haruyama Turnpike. The largest city in the prefecture is Yōhaku (ē¾Šč–„åø‚), with the main road going into it being the Shiromine Line. Yōhaku is said to have the best ramen shop in the entirety of Yamitani, which sits on a road off to the side of the highest point of the Shiromine Line.

Two other cities exist in Yamitani, one of them being Atachi (꘎達åø‚), which sits at the foothill of Mt. Imori (é£Æę£®å±±), and is connected by the Mt. Imori Service Road. The other, and the smallest city, Motohara (äø‹åŽŸåø‚) which is connected by the Nakagawa pass. Motohara allegedly contains the tomb of Jesus Christ.

Submitting & Deadlines

DO NOT SEND IN ENTRIES UNTIL I SAY IT IS OKAY TO DO SO

Reiterating what was already said earlier, all cars in the clan must be sent by one person to me. I will allow resubmissions ONLY if there is a game error, or if a rule had been broken by an entrant (which will be very easy to catch even by the players). Also I will only be accepting forum entries.

Naming format:
Model/Family: SSX - forum username
Trim/Variant: whatever

Entries will close when the maximum amount of clans have been filled, or when the timer counts to zero. Whichever comes first (the former will, hopefully).

So you might be wondering, when will entries actually open?
like idk somewhere within the next 2 weeks i guess, all the rules have been basically solidified after some closed beta testing (???), so donā€™t excpect any major changes if you do decide to start working early
if you send me something before i officially announce entries are open i will demolish you

Entries Accepted: 02:00 October 14, 2022 JST
Official Deadline: 02:00 November 3rd, 2022 JST
*note: may be subject to change, especially in case of a mass killrobification event which fucks around with the stats

Touge List

  • Shiromine Line (ē™½å³°ļ¼‰
    Length: 10.6km
    Turns: 22
A mostly smooth track, with long, winding turns. At the top of the line, the prefecture-famous Yuzuki Ramen restaurant exists, rumored to be owned by a retired street racer who presently makes high-speed deliveries to the hotel at the bottom of the line and at the entrance of Yōhaku. There are currently no valid eyewitness accounts of such a delivery vehicle speeding down the mountain, nor any delivieries being made to the hotel.

    -VON VITTORIA ATSU - @Falling_Comet | @yurimacs

  • Haruyama Turnpike (ę˜„å±±ļ¼‰
    Length: 11.8km
    Turns: 18
A very long and high speed highway that connects the capital of Amatsukame to outside the prefecture. Notable features include its steep inclination and the low abundance of turns with the exception of two hairpin curves at the bottom of the mountain. The road is very well paved despite being the oldest of the four mountain roads of Yamitani.

    -THE SPARROWS - @TheYugo45GV | @MrdjaNikolen

  • Nakagawa Pass (äøå·ļ¼‰
    Length: 6.2km
    Turns: 26
A very tight and rather bumpy pass that passes through a valley connecting to Motohara. Off to the side of the road is a connection that goes to an alleged tomb of Jesus Christ. The legend goes that following the Taiping Rebellion in China, Hong Xiuquan advised his brother Jesus to live in Japan instead. Jesus moved and became a wheat farmer in Motohara, where he lived the rest of his life after marrying a Japanese woman and bearing four children. The ancestors of these children of Christ continue to live in Motohara to this very day.

    -DAYDREAM - @Aruna | @IDK158

  • Mt. Imori Service Road (é£Æę£®ļ¼‰
    Length: 7.2km
    Turns: 39
This steep, winding toll road connects the city of Atachi, famous for its numerous Buddhist temples and scenic views of Mt Imori and Lake Atachi, to the rest of the prefecture. The road is fairly new, so it is quite smooth despite the numerous amount of turns. Anyone driving here is bound to enjoy a workout for themselves. The numerous curves of the Imori Service Road has became very popular for drifters within the past few years.

Sounds very interesting indeed. Must say that I donā€™t really get the grip about the rules surrounding the clan system, but Iā€™ll probably learnā€¦

Regarding car quality and tech pool:

Are either or both of these for the entire car, or each individual part?

As for engine quality and tech pool:

Do either or both of these apply for the whole engine, or each specific component?

I think this is in kW/kg.

all techpool and quality rules are for each individual part, will probably put an image in later to clear that up

hp/kg, will clarify later

Some general thoughts - I quite like the format, including the clan mechanics, but I think it lacks a bit in boundaries and feedback. What do I mean with that?

A common thing is to build racecars if laptime (track time) matters, even if the hosts donā€™t want that. Power is essentially free with turbos (CCPC cough), for instance and everyone will run massive tyres etc.

Which leads to the second thing - feedback. Currently, I would neither know when to stop optimising (ofc you want to skirt the rules) before getting a racecar bin nor would I know what to optimise for.

I could optimise laptime on Der RĆ¼cken hill climb, for instance, but I would have no idea whether this in any way a) corresponds to performance in your spreadsheet and b) based on that how to balance things out with other factors that may matter (the finer points of suspension tuning? drivability? comfort? ā€¦)

What you may thus end up with are entries that are quite far off in terms of performance, based on everyoneā€™s first best guess (or shot in the dark, rather). See, for instance, Tom Henksā€™ recent rally series with a purposely very restrictive ruleset and the resulting cars still were several seconds off each other. And that was with the opportunity to test the submissions to death and exchange progress on Discord.

My entire response to this, is that itā€™s kept vague for a reason. I donā€™t intend for this to be an ultra premiere racing challenge where people need to go the fastest on the touge, as much as the story says otherwise. Itā€™s primarily a role playing thing, akin to the Shitbox Rally, and the racing calculations are really just fluff to make an interesting writing.

I can put in hints for what to build for if you really want to go against my intended spirit for this comp and go down the route of ultra fast high speed pure racing and watching numbers go vrrrrrrr 2 minutes lap time 400 kmh broken calc, but really what I want is just a casual challenge where you just go along with things instead of trying to find the high speed meta. The goal is to have fun without needing to go through every nook and cranny for every possible second of lap time there is. Maybe I couldā€™ve picked a better theme that doesnā€™t emphasize intense competition for a grand prize, but it is what it is.

As for the large gaps between cars, I did say I did some private testing beforehand, and indeed there were some ridiculous gaps that were nearly 2 minutes long. Fortunately I managed to mend this issue and Iā€™ve brought gaps for cars to within 3-5 seconds which is about on par for longer touge courses.

Hmmā€¦ I have a potential partner for this, and maybe a car kinda picked out.

Would a turbocharged V6 4-door sedan run foul with the rules? Kinda have to ask because I have one in mind.

Also, I suppose I could go with a human character. Makes things harder for me to do because Iā€™ve got a well-established set of characters to pick from, though. And this is exactly the kind of chaos I could see Kaylie being interested in.

A turbo V6 sedan is perfectly reasonable, an irl example would be the Galant VR-4 (my beloved), it would be a bit heavy but then again people did take Skylines and Chasers on the touge. Almost everything goes here.

Slight update: Added some stuff relating to techpool, variety rolls, spare cars, etc.

Iā€™m still debating on when to open this, but Iā€™m thinking sometime within the next two weeks. The deadline for entries is probably gonna be short, donā€™t really wanna spend too much time on basically a crapshoot for stats.

also in a few minutes or hours or whatever, expect a little lore/prologue post to appear

Wait the hp/kg, minimum. The slowest your car is allowed to be is 0.175? yes? Iā€™ve been reading it as max, oops.

Yeah, itā€™s a minimum because too low values cause the calc to break. Just an extra measure to prevent stuff like fully stock kei cars or Trabants from entering.

is anybody interested in trying to build a team on here? or are we all looking outside of this thread for race partners?

I wonder what people would think about a ā€œsingles listā€, for people who have yet to find themselves a partner but wish to partake in the challenge? I think itā€™d be effective as people could just pick from the list and DM them. If people find a partner they can DM me to take them off the list.

the invitation

Yamitani, August 199ā–ˆ

A mysterious and peculiar classified appeared in the local newspaper one day. But this wasnā€™t like any other, a hidden code understood by street racers was embedded into it. This simply isnā€™t just a classified about a used handbag, it was much more underneath the kana that was printed onto the paper.

This was an invitation.

Those who cracked the code gathered to the designated location at the time planned. October 17th, 12:00 AM, Amatsukame Station. People who came were skeptical, and this skepticism of theirs only grew as they arrived to witness a black American SUV sitting in the parking lot in front of the station, in front of it a stepping platform apparently for climbing onto its square hood that acted as a table of sorts.

Next to the vehicle was a figure, no taller than 170 centimetres and sharply dressed. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until one would gaze upon the figureā€™s face, and find it covered by a mask with a letter from an alphabet unfamiliar to the locals. Ī£, it said.

Upon the arrival of people at the scene, they were greeted by the figure, who spoke elegantly but in an oddly robotic voice that sounded as though it were altered by a computer and spoken through a speaker. It was not un-human, but it felt off to whoever heard it.

ā€œIf you are interested in defending the honour of Yamitani, then please step ahead and acquire the paper on the table before you.ā€

Table of course, meaning the large, nearly flat, glossy surface of the American vehicleā€™s hood.

The braver ones among the crowd stepped forward, and up on the wide stool that sat before the bumper of the car, and anxiously took a paper from the stack that was sitting on the hood. Upon their scanning of the file, it would contain instructions both in English, and Japanese.

Proud hashiriya of Yamitani, if you have gathered here tonight, you have heeded my call.

Pardon my rough introduction, for I cannot make it to be with you all on this lovely evening, but my representative remains here to guide you with any questions you may have. Its name is Sigma, and it will be helping you through what you may desire to inquire about this situation you have entered.

The honour code of our streets has been broken, and we are looking for those who are willing to mend it once more.

Form a clan of racers. Two or three of you. Two to race, one to strategize. Build yourselves as though an army ready to conquer or defend.

Race until you find the greatest amongst yourselves.

I, X, will be guiding you to the very end.

The prize will be the chance to represent the glory of our region, and to officially fight back against those who challenged us.

Sign your names, and continue to heed this call of mine once you hand it to my dearest Sigma.

X

The words were oblique, but oddly understandable despite the severe lack of a lot of majorly common kanji used in the writing of the letter. Sigma stood there, unmoving as usual. It answered questions, but these responses were as vague as the paper written.

Even then, the bravest ones decided to write their name down, and it would only be a matter of time until they would receive their responses. They handed their papers over to the obedient servant, who bowed with elegant glee from every response.

Not even weeks would go by, and X would invite them to the first joust.

Papers mysteriously mailed to peopleā€™s doors, signaling that the game had indeed begun.

The hunt for Yamitaniā€™s best hashiriya.

The clock now slowly ticks down to zero.

Because of my slight scheduling cockup, Iā€™ve extended the deadline by about 6 or whatever days to October 29th JST. New timer available both here and in the OP.

Also, please be sure to check the singles list if youā€™re still looking for a partner. If you want to be put on the list, just hit me with a DM either here or on Discord (YuriBread#8831).

Thereā€™s still five clan slots available so make sure to use your time wisely!

3 DAYS TO DEADLINE

So it is what it says. Thereā€™s about (slightly more than) 3 days until the deadline. I forgot to remind people about the deadline like 2 days ago so thatā€™s why iā€™m totally not panicking. The singles list still exists so if youā€™re looking for people to partner up with go ahead and mingle mingle.

So far, there are 5 clan slots filled up, which means thereā€™s still room for six more people to join so I can have an even bracket.

also here's a sketch of Sigma for those that read the invitation bit, as well as another mysterious individual you will meet at the actual races

So with about 2 days left to the deadline, Iā€™m considering one last extension because of some people with an apparent interest in participating, but not having enough time, as well as me not wanting to have to fill the rest of the slots with NPC teams.

To finalize things, iā€™ll set up a poll and if thereā€™s actually enough people who are willing to find a partner to participate, Iā€™ll extend, if not Iā€™ll just use NPC teams with randomly generated stats.

  • Iā€™m interested in extending the deadline to Monday JST (extra 2 days-ish)
  • Iā€™m interested in extending the deadline to Wednesday JST (basically an extra week)
  • Keep it as it is, just use NPC teams

EDIT adding this additional poll as well because some people canā€™t seem to find partners

  • Create pairs for those in the singles list
