Evening is no stranger to the howls of the beasts that prowl these streets.
This is the story of the rise of a true street racer.
MIDNIGHT RACE HUNTER
Break the boundaries of driving,
And feel the emotion of rhythm.
INTERMEDIA - the scenario
Japan, 199ā
A high-class street racing group has recently made the rounds throughout the mountainous Yamitani (éå£) region. Armed with their low-profile cars mounting expensive equipment, and completely-game changing racing abilities, they ruled the roads setting apparently untouchable lap records upon the treacherous tÅge roads that lined the hills of these usually-quiet pathways. Noontime is always ready, after all, and it wouldnāt take long for resistance to commence against this sweeping force, but in a most unusual way that would be.
The presence of this group, and the defeat of an utmost important hashiriya to this club has prompted the arrival of a secret society, with a leader only known as X. Their goal remains simple, and can be outlined in a way that even a child would know.
To find the true, best racer of the Yamitani region, and defeat the club that had rampaged on these proud streets.
What better way to find this, than to encourage the formation of clans to participate in the hunt for the new Midnight Racer, to serve X and duel against another for the ultimate victory.
X has left her invitation to those willing, looking for people from the roads of the Nakagawa Pass (äøå·), Mt. Imori (é£Æę£®), the Haruyama Turnpike (ę„å±±), and Shiromine Line (ē½å³°).
This marks the beginning of the Midnight Race Hunt, to find the best tÅge driver of Yamitani.
Only one may hold the crown awarded by X.
The Ruleset
In order to participate, you will first need a car. duh Youāre most likely not going to be driving bone-stock roadcars here, but you wonāt be driving track-only race cars with full blown GT300 bodykits and race tuned sus. Try to keep things reasonably road legal, though one or two hidden illegal modifications could pass.
Model/Trim Rules:
- Trim Year cannot be set newer than 1999.
*you can go lower than this, in case you want to do some K-swapped 1967 mustang shenanigans idk tokyo drift is a distant memory by now - No limitations on body style, but avoid memery and open-wheelers.
*what consttutes as memery is subjective, ask me before hand and depending on my mood i will either reject or accept you sending in that turbo B18C-swapped Jeep Liberty - Maximum Cost - $42,000
- Minimum Comfort score of 15 is required.
- Minimum Safety of 30 is required.
- Full carbon fibre is banned, but partial carbon panels are legal.
- 2 full seats minimum required
- A maximum of 4 aerodynamic fixtures are allowed (wings, lips, spoilers etc), and race diffusers are banned.
*honestly with some of the roads yāall will be driving on, you really wouldnāt want one - Semi-slicks are banned.
- Maximum amount of quality is +5.
- Minimum amount of safety quality is +0.
- Car Tech Techpool maximum +0.
- make an actual road going realistic car or something like that btw dont make a motorcycle or 6x6 or whatever i will destroy you
Engine Rules:
- Variant year cannot be newer than 1999.
*feel free to mix and match years, in case you do want a Jeep PowerTech-swapped RX-7 or whatever the hell - Fuel type 98 RON/93 AKI
- Catalytic Converter Required on cars introduced after 1975
- Maximum amount of quality is +10.
- Engine Tech Techpool maximum +7.
Misc Rules:
- Minimum PWR of 0.175 (hp/kg)
*Note: Manually calculated is preferred, you can rely on in-game PWR if you want but i personally think itās better to do it by hand. Just take horsepower and divide it by your weight, no need for extra transmission loss calculations or whatever, make it simple. - One spare car per team is allowed. This is completely optional, but could prove useful in the event a major mistake happens in the race and a car is thrown out of service.
Techpool screenshot:
Clans are going to be the integral part of this challenge. Within these clans, people will form their bonds to improve their vehicles, and themselves as they learn from their experiences being with one another.
- There will be eight (8) clans in total. Locations can be picked from the aforementioned roads by the players, or by the host if the clans are indecisive.
- Clans need to have two players each. No more, no less.
- Players are allowed a maximum of two characters each, and at least one character will be required.
- One person/character of the clan must be appointed as the leader.
- Before the beginning of the challenge, the clans will need to have a name decided for themselves.
- No clan reservations. First come, first serve.
- Submitting should be done as one clan, one person (doesnāt have to be the leader, but recommended they do the submitting, will DM me all the .car files of their clan. I will not accept individual submissions, and there will be NO Resubmissions except for special cases (Game update borking shit, etc). This means you canāt submit like 2 unfinished cars per clan just to get in.
- Two clans will need to take up one mountain pass, and once a pass has been claimed by two clans, no other clans can claim that location.
- Adding onto the above, since there are eight clan slots, once they are full, no one will be able to enter.
- Roleplaying is not required, but encouraged even if it does not affect results.
???
The way Iāll be running the main part of the event is that I have an unfortunately complex spreadsheet that roughly calculates the vehicleās average speed throughout a course. In addition, a random number generator will be utilized for additional scenarios such as driver errors, or unexpected course movements, as the races are run on public roads after all.
The reason for there being eight clans is to simplify the battles into 2v2 races that go into a tournament bracket format. There will be no points for second place, and no loser brackets. Each clan battle will have an uphill and downhill race, where two players from each clan will need to be assigned either an uphill or downhill specialist role (1 role each). The course selected for the uphill/downhill battle will be randomized.
A few examples of how this would work would be:
example 1
Clan A from Imori is chosen to go against Clan C from Haruyama.
Uphill Specialists: Sora (Clan A) | Vincent (Clan C)
Downhill Specialists: Amelia (Clan A) | Yuri (Clan C)The course selected for the Uphill is Haruyama Turnpike Inbound
The course selected for the Downhill is Mt. Imori
or
example 2
Clan D from Nakagawa is chosen to go against Clan C from Haruyama.
Uphill Specialists: Isaac (Clan D) | Vincent (Clan C)
Downhill Specialists: Suisei (Clan D) | Yuri (Clan C)The course selected for the Uphill is Nakagawa Pass
The course selected for the Downhill is Nakagawa Pass
*The formatting will obviously be different and more legible, but you get the point
Following the downhill/uphill specialist battles, one clan member will need to be assigned as the āJesterā. The Jester will be doing both uphill and downhill battles at random, and will act as the tiebreaker in the event both teams reach a stalemate.
So the full examples would be:
example 3
Clan A from Imori is chosen to go against Clan C from Haruyama.
Uphill Specialists: Sora (Clan A) | Vincent (Clan C)
Downhill Specialists: Amelia (Clan A) | Yuri (Clan C)
Jester: Sora (Clan A) | Vincent (Clan C)The course selected for the Uphill is Haruyama Turnpike Inbound
The course selected for the Downhill is Mt. Imori
The course selected for the Jester is Haruyama Turnpike Inbound (Downhill)
The clans will battle one another in a single elimination format. Each battle will happen on a Saturday, every week. First will be the uphill battle, followed by the downhill battle. The Jester battle will be the tiebreaker battle if needed.
Two clans will first race against one another, followed by the next two. The two teams that emerge victorious from these battles will now go up against one another to determine the winning clan.
Depending on your Driveability and Sportiness levels, I will randomly generate a number which will be reduced from your speed. The chart for this is below.
Put simply, if your Driveability is in the 20-30 range, then I will generate a number from 1-20 that will be deducted from your average speed throughout the individual sectors. If it is in the 40-50 range, it will range from 1 to 10, and higher than that will range from 1 to 4. This also applies to sportiness, with the higher sportiness meaning a lower chance of getting a bad number.
As for rolls outside of stat-dependent ones, there will also be random event rolls that will be rather rare. I will generate a number from 1-20 for all cars that will determine whether or not a major mistake had happened.
If this mistake roll lands on a 20, a major mistake has happened, and I will then generate a number from 1 to 4 to determine the severity of the mistake, where 1-2 would be slight damage to the car (reduction in Driveability by 2 points), and 3-4 would be a crash where the car is taken out of the race, and the opponent automatically wins by default. The car will not be able to race for another week, and the character driving the car will need to use the backup (if present), if not, the Jester will need to go in place.
The format for the RNG elements will be: Sport, Drive, Mistake
The numbers are in order idk how to phrase this better help
As such:
ROLLS: (Sport, Drive, Mistake)
KATOU - 4, 5, 3 | 18, 5, 1 - DAISUKE
So the full format for the results will be similar to the following examples:

Roleplaying, as said earlier, will not significantly affect the outcomes of the battles, but will be highly recommended to act in. Once your entries have been accepted, you can immediately begin posting your clan RPs, or whatnot.
As much as I donāt want to limit things, since I myself caused quite a headache for a certain someone in a certain challenge just this year (sorry Madrias), Iāll have to limit some stuff people do, which basically just extends to stuff like donāt intentionally put yourself in a spot that will get your character arrested, or the race event getting discovered by the feds or whatever. also try to be human (not that you canāt, just that it might be a tad awkward having kitsunes and onis on the toge)
Pretty much no character is going to be dying in this race, but as this is some high-paced dangerous mountain road action, an injury or two might perhaps happen due to a driver error (like how I mentioned earlier with those funky RNG rolling thingys), but most of these will be stuff that can be resolved in the pacing I have planned.
In-game time goes as fast as time relative to us (or real time i guess), so the battles happen in the roleplay one week after another, and on a Saturday as well. This should allow people to retain a good sense of pace without having it feel like 3 years have gone by in our time but 3 hours have gone by in the RP.
For the interactive environment, you can hit me up with a DM, as Iāve basically got some aspects of the setting laid down, otherwise you can also refer to the next section for some basics about the location set in.
Yamitani Prefecture (éå£ē, Yamitani-ken) is a fictional prefecture in Japan. It is near the capital region by the coast and is known for being very mountainous.
Amatsukame (天äŗåø) is the capital of Yamitani Prefecture, the main historical district of Yamitani featuring the Yamitani Castle, and the main road going into it is the Haruyama Turnpike. The largest city in the prefecture is YÅhaku (ē¾čåø), with the main road going into it being the Shiromine Line. YÅhaku is said to have the best ramen shop in the entirety of Yamitani, which sits on a road off to the side of the highest point of the Shiromine Line.
Two other cities exist in Yamitani, one of them being Atachi (ęéåø), which sits at the foothill of Mt. Imori (é£Æę£®å±±), and is connected by the Mt. Imori Service Road. The other, and the smallest city, Motohara (äøååø) which is connected by the Nakagawa pass. Motohara allegedly contains the tomb of Jesus Christ.
Miscellaneous
So this is basically my free write section like in every challenge I host where I add stuff that I donāt know where else to add.
Below is a moodboard of sorts or inspiration gathering area, i might add more stuff here if people have good suggestions for items to add
Inspirational Images
Some of the galleries had too many pictures so I had to split them up like this, sorry tsuchiya fans

this isnāt tsuchiya but this frame was featured in a video about tsuchiya driving the vette so iām keeping it in anyway

DO NOT SEND IN ENTRIES UNTIL I SAY IT IS OKAY TO DO SO
Reiterating what was already said earlier, all cars in the clan must be sent by one person to me. I will allow resubmissions ONLY if there is a game error, or if a rule had been broken by an entrant (which will be very easy to catch even by the players). Also I will only be accepting forum entries.
Naming format:
Model/Family: SSX - forum username
Trim/Variant: whatever
Entries will close when the maximum amount of clans have been filled, or when the timer counts to zero. Whichever comes first (the former will, hopefully).
So you might be wondering, when will entries actually open?
like idk somewhere within the next 2 weeks i guess, all the rules have been basically solidified after some closed beta testing (???), so donāt excpect any major changes if you do decide to start working early
if you send me something before i officially announce entries are open i will demolish you
Entries Accepted: 02:00 October 14, 2022 JST
Official Deadline: 02:00 November 3rd, 2022 JST
*note: may be subject to change, especially in case of a mass killrobification event which fucks around with the stats

Shiromine Line (ē½å³°ļ¼
Length: 10.6km
Turns: 22
A mostly smooth track, with long, winding turns. At the top of the line, the prefecture-famous Yuzuki Ramen restaurant exists, rumored to be owned by a retired street racer who presently makes high-speed deliveries to the hotel at the bottom of the line and at the entrance of YÅhaku. There are currently no valid eyewitness accounts of such a delivery vehicle speeding down the mountain, nor any delivieries being made to the hotel.

Haruyama Turnpike (ę„å±±ļ¼
Length: 11.8km
Turns: 18
A very long and high speed highway that connects the capital of Amatsukame to outside the prefecture. Notable features include its steep inclination and the low abundance of turns with the exception of two hairpin curves at the bottom of the mountain. The road is very well paved despite being the oldest of the four mountain roads of Yamitani.

Nakagawa Pass (äøå·ļ¼
Length: 6.2km
Turns: 26
A very tight and rather bumpy pass that passes through a valley connecting to Motohara. Off to the side of the road is a connection that goes to an alleged tomb of Jesus Christ. The legend goes that following the Taiping Rebellion in China, Hong Xiuquan advised his brother Jesus to live in Japan instead. Jesus moved and became a wheat farmer in Motohara, where he lived the rest of his life after marrying a Japanese woman and bearing four children. The ancestors of these children of Christ continue to live in Motohara to this very day.

Mt. Imori Service Road (é£Æę£®ļ¼
Length: 7.2km
Turns: 39
This steep, winding toll road connects the city of Atachi, famous for its numerous Buddhist temples and scenic views of Mt Imori and Lake Atachi, to the rest of the prefecture. The road is fairly new, so it is quite smooth despite the numerous amount of turns. Anyone driving here is bound to enjoy a workout for themselves. The numerous curves of the Imori Service Road has became very popular for drifters within the past few years.
