Midnight Race Hunter SSX [BATTLE FOUR 12/03]

ジェスターバトル | JESTER BATTLE

199█/11/19

The rain dripped down from the heavens above on this night. If one were to tune into the radio this late at night, they would be greeted with the radio DJ announcing a song request for a certain somebody.

Otherwise, the parking lot atop Nakagawa was as lively as ever with another one of X’s battles being held, this time a true battle that will determine whether Von Vittoria Attsu, or Dancing All Night, will move onto the next stage of the hunt for a new midnight racer.

X’s unmistakable sedan would arrive once again, escorted by the usual flurry of the overpriced American imports. The black coupe from the other night was nowhere to be seen, and from the sedan out came Sigma, and another figure who came along. The two of them were escorted out to the crowd, and a lot more bodyguards were present this time than the previous two nights.

Hell, some with really keen senses would be able to feel the sights that lurked down at them, but was there really such a presence? Or was the mere appearance of this new character enough to drive one mad?

Whatever the case, the two who came out from the sedan introduced themselves as usual.

“Good evening, those who have gathered here. I figured I should have made my appearance at some point to you all.” The person Sigma came with spoke up. Unlike Sigma or Omega, their voice was clear, and it was masculine. They wore a mask that pretty much said it all, a black mask emblazoned with a metallic purple “X” covered his face, yet the sides of his head were all visible to those who could see clearly through the dimness of the night.

“It is none other than me, X. I had a hunch that the scores would be settled between these two teams tonight, and as such I have come here personally to witness this.”

X looked over towards Sigma, who promptly looked back at him and stepped forward after being handed the same umbrella as the week before by another assistant.

“You all have heard the man. Let us commence forth.”

“Put on a show for me, everyone involved.”

ROLLS: (Sport, Drive, Mistake)

BATTLE DATA

SECTOR 1 TURNS: 6
SECTOR 1 LENGTH: 2.4 km
SECTOR 1 AVG GRADE: 14.3 °

SECTOR 1 TIMES:
FUJI - 80s | 83.8s - HASHIMOTO
SECTOR 1 AVG SPEED:
FUJI - 107.9 kph | 103.1 kph - HASHIMOTO

Our two drivers for tonight seemed very alike. Serious, and focused on the race ahead of them. If one were to observe them closely, they would notice the sparks that would light up in between them, like a red lightning bolt of fate that will tell them their destiny upon these streets,

The cars they drove were also very similar. Two door coupes with high powered turbocharged inline sixes, only the Suisei running slightly higher power, but with higher weight to balance it all out. The Inoue was more balanced, being rear wheel drive and lighter.

Even with the slight difference in cars, both drivers knew that performance is not determined by the car, nor the driver alone. The only truth that stood between them is the result of the duel itself.

In a flurry of déjà vu, Sigma stood between the two cars again, and waved her umbrella like a flag. The cars jumped across the line and barrelled down the pass very closely

SECTOR 2 TURNS: 3
SECTOR 2 LENGTH: 1.4 km
SECTOR 2 AVG GRADE: 1.9 °

SECTOR 2 TIMES:
FUJI - 51.5s | 54.1s - HASHIMOTO
SECTOR 2 AVG SPEED:
FUJI - 97.9 kph | 93.1 kph - HASHIMOTO

Unlike the battles between Hashimoto and Ascari, or Shimizu and Fuji, thse two drivers were scarily close, bumper to bumper, and at times even slightly coming into contact. Hashimoto would manage to sneak through a gap in the corners at one point, throwing Fuji off-balance and having both cars' noses neck and neck through the sector's end point.

“It is like witnessing a fight between two swordsmen of equal power.” Said X as he viewed the footage on the CRTs carried by Omega. “Even paying full attention to each other’s movements, it is difficult to determine the true outcome of such a battle, unless you were there for yourself to witness the feel of the warriors themselves in the field.”

SECTOR 3 TURNS: 7
SECTOR 3 LENGTH: 1 km
SECTOR 3 AVG GRADE: 0.4 °

SECTOR 3 TIMES:
FUJI - 39.2s | 41.3s - HASHIMOTO
SECTOR 3 AVG SPEED:
FUJI - 91.9 kph | 87.1 kph - HASHIMOTO

Weaving in and out of these incredibly tight corners in their massive cars, the crowd would hold their breath in witnessing the race. Their speed was dangerously fast on this course, and Sigma could tell very well how wide the grin was on X's face as he saw both cars centimetres off the guardrails, and Hashimoto just barely dragging along the ass of the red coupe ahead of him, occasionally bringing the nose of his car right up to the opponent's own door.

SECTOR 4 TURNS: 10
SECTOR 4 LENGTH: 1.4 km
SECTOR 4 AVG GRADE: 14.3 °

SECTOR 4 TIMES:
FUJI - 49s | 51.4s - HASHIMOTO
SECTOR 4 AVG SPEED:
FUJI - 102.9 kph | 98.1 kph - HASHIMOTO

Finally, at the near end, Fuji takes advantage of a footwork technique to drive the heavier through the last few corners, barely pulling away from Hashimoto to catch the victory firmly in his grasp.

TOTAL RESULT
FUJI - 03:40 | 03:51 - HASHIMOTO
TOTAL AVG SPEED:
FUJI - 100 kph | 95 kph - HASHIMOTO

The battle between the swordsmen was over, and a winner was officially determined between the two clans as to who will be moving onto the next stage of the Midnight clan battles.

TONIGHT’S BATTLE WINNER: FUJI FROM VON VITTORIA ATTSU

"With that, we are proud to announce that Von Vittoria Attsu will be moving onto the next phase. Please stand by." Said Sigma in their usual diligent tone.

On the screen Omega was holding, the words “DANCING ALL NIGHT” would appear, before being sharply crossed out by a purple cross mark.

X would walk up to the drivers as they arrived back, giving them a handshake and words of congratulations and consolation.

WINNER OF TONIGHT'S BATTLE:
藤井直樹
FUJI NAOKI

"The R stands for invincibility!"

With the battle over, Sigma provided the results to the teams, and gave the information for the next clans to be battling. Once that was done, Sigma followed X back to the black sedan, and off did the fleet of vehicles go.

ERROR CORRECTIONS: The last battle between Shimizu and Fuji was actually an Uphill Battle, sorry for the confusion, will improve that on the next one

NIGHT SHADE

FRIDAY, JULY 199Y, 2 years before 199X

SETTING - SCHOOL

The room was quiet. Yuuna did not have much time left. She had trained for countless weeks and even months, all for this moment. Check your work, check it again, and check again for the third time. The fate of the world lies in her hands. One small mistake and-

Time’s up!” the invigilator announced, “Please stop working and pass your worksheets to the front.”

Yuuna complied, putting down your pen and passing her paper to the front of the class. The exams are finally over. After months of stress and suffering, Yuuna is finally free to enjoy her summer holiday. Yuuna breathed a sigh of relief as she headed down to the shoe locker, talking with her friends along the way. Once she got down, one of Yuuna’s classmates hit her on her shoulder. Yuuna looked behind to see who it was.

“Hey, Kyoko!” Yuuna said, “Congrats on finishing the test!”

“Of course!” Kyoko, Yuuna’s gyaru friend, said, “Those tests were all like nothing! Say, you’re free tonight, right? Let’s go up to the mountains!”

“The mountains?” Yuuna asked, “Sure, that would be nice and relaxing!”

“Great! Let’s meet up at the station at 9PM, then. Don’t be late!”

“Hold on, why are we going so late at night?”

“Well…”

Kyoko bent her knees and stretched forth her arms, as though she was gripping something circular in front of her.

“Vroom, vroom!” Kyoko said as she steered the invisible object, “We’re racing up in the mountains!”

“Hold on, you can drive?” Yuuna retorted, “We’re not even 18 yet!”

“Of course I’m not driving there myself! Mitaka-senpai will pick us up in his super-cool Hinode Garuda!”

“Mita-who?”

“You should come! Besides, there are plenty of boys up there. Single, and ready to mingle~”

Yuuna was taken aback, blushing slightly.

“Wh-hey! You know I’m not into that kind of stuff! I am not in the market for letting a boy live in my head rent-free!”

“Yeah yeah, that’s what they all say. Anyway, I’ll see you tomorrow. Don’t be late!”

Kyoko dashed away, waving at the still-blushing Yuuna.

“T-that rascal!” Yuuna thought.

FRIDAY NIGHT, JULY 199Y

SETTING - MOTOHARA RAILWAY STATION

It was a Friday night, and Yuuna was waiting in front of the station. The average high schooler would either be home or on their way home at this time to avoid getting a mouthful from their worried parents. Yuuna told her parents that she was going to stay over at Kyoko’s place, so she also brought a bag carrying a change of clothes. Yuuna knew nothing about “street racing” apart from the occasional modified car passing by her, or manga like Yoroshiku Mechadoc and/or Shakotan Boogie which the boys read sometimes. Yuuna looked at a nearby clock.

“It’s 21:15.” Yuuna thought, “Where on Earth is she?”

Stations in other cities would still be bustling at this time. In Motohara, however, it was practically deserted, save for a few taxis and a handful of people getting off from their long commute from the capital. The relative silence was quickly broken by the sound of a loud exhaust. Yuuna looked around, and saw a lowered and modified coupe at the red light.

“That must be the Garuda Kyoko was talking about!” Yuuna thought, having recognized the car from Abunai Keisatsu (which her father liked to watch on TV).

Yuuna waved her hands in the air, trying to get the attention of the Garuda. Once the light turned green, the Garuda made its way to the station and stopped next to Yuuna. She could hear the deep bass from whatever music that was being played inside the car.

“Hey, Yuuna!” Kyoko called, exiting the car and folding the front passenger seat, “Come on in!”

Yuuna made her way inside the car. The back seats were nice and comfortable, but as Kyoko returned and put her seat in place it became a little cramped.

Kyoko closed the door, rolled the window back up, and fastened her seatbelt.

“Yuuna, this is Mitaka-senpai.” Kyoko said, “Mitaka-senpai, this is my friend, Utoda.”

“Nice to meet you, Utoda-san.” Mitaka said.

“Likewise.” Yuuna replied somewhat nervously.

“First time going to Nakagawa Pass at this hour?”

“Y-yes.”

“Don’t worry about anything, Yuuna!” Kyoko affirmed, “We’re gonna have a lot of fun! Besides, Mitaka-senpai is a very skilled driver. You can rest assured that you will be safe and sound!”

“Shall we go then, Kyoko?”

“Let’s go!”

Mitaka threw the car in gear and accelerated out of the station. Yuuna was shocked at the sudden movement and held on for dear life as the Garuda sped its way up Nakagawa Pass.

FRIDAY NIGHT, JULY 199Y

SETTING - NAKAGAWA PASS

Nakagawa Pass was quite crowded that night. Not only because it was a Saturday night, but also because school is out for the many high schoolers that frequent the mountain road.

Amidst the revving engines and squealing tyres, a lone Hinode Garuda slid through the tight corners carrying three passengers.

“This is so fun!” Kyoko said excitedly, “You’re the best driver there is, senpai!”

“Hmph!” Mitaka said, “This is only a fraction of my true power!”

“Oh, senpai!” Kyoko said, “Don’t be so corny!”

The two laughed away, all while Yuuna had accepted her fate at the back seat. She believed that she could die any time soon and it didn’t help that, for very obvious reasons, she was a third wheel witnessing something she shouldn’t be seeing.

“Lord help me…” Yuuna thought, “I shouldn’t have come…”

After what seemed like an eternity, the Garuda finally slowed down. Yuuna looked out the window, finding out that they had stopped at some sort of rest area filled with other modified cars and their owners socializing.

“Yuuna, we’re here!” Kyoko said.

“Y-yes.” Yuuna replied, recovering from that traumatic experience.

“Are you alright, Yuuna?” Kyoko asked, concerned.

“You look rather pale, Utoda-san.” Mitaka said, worried about Yuuna.

“Ahaha, don’t worry about me. I just need some fresh air.”

“Well, alright then. Come out and have some fun!”

Kyoko folded the front passenger seat to let Yuuna out. Immediately, they were greeted by Mitaka and Kyoko’s friends greeting each other. Yuuna introduced herself to them and made some small talk, but she was still not convinced about the whole street racing gig.

“Alright guys, let’s go for a run!” Mitaka said.

“Let’s go!”

“You coming with us, Yuuna?”

“No thanks, Kyoko.” Yuuna replied, “Maybe on the next run.”

“Ehhhh???” Kyoko said, “Alright then, suit yourself.”

Kyoko, Mitaka and their group got into their cars, leaving Yuuna behind. Yuuna may be an extrovert, but even she needs a break after having her life flash before her eyes earlier. Yuuna, with nothing better to do, walked over to a vending machine and got herself a can of juice. Right as she opened the can, however, two men approached her.

“Hey, cutie!” One of them called, “I’ve never seen you around. Wanna go for a drive?”

“Ah, not right now…” Yuuna replied, “I don’t feel like it at the moment.”

“It’s alright, young lady.” the second man reassured, “We can just go for a calming drive. Just a cruise in our Kaizen FC24.”

Yuuna looked past the two men. It was a lowered compact executive sedan with large wheels and a very long exhaust pipe. Yuuna had her doubts about Mitaka’s car but the Teutonic sedan looked much dodgier.

“I appreciate the offer, but I’m just tired right now-”

“Oh, we know a place where you can be ‘relieved’, if you catch my drift.”

“Excuse me, boys.” an unknown female voice behind the two men said.

The two men turned around and were shocked, revealing a somewhat tall and mature woman with reddish-brown hair, smoking a cigarette that smelled of cloves.

“Y-Yagami-sensei!” one of the men called, “W-what are you doing here?!?”.

“Ah, you’re one of my patients’ sons!” the woman said, “You know, if you keep this up I might just spill the beans on what you did just now. They won’t exactly be pleased when they hear that their son is trying to shack up a young, innocent girl now, won’t they?”

“W-we’re just showing her around, sensei.” the man said, trying to laugh it off.

“Oh, how courteous of you.” the woman said, “But like she said, she doesn’t want to be with you at the moment. Now, scram!”

“W-were very sorry!” the two men exclaimed, bowing apologetically before making a run for their car.

“Goddamn, kids these days…”

“Uhh, ma’am?”

“Ah, sorry about that, kid.” the woman said, “I just can’t stand seeing boys like that.”

“Oh, no! I’m supposed to be the one thanking you. T-thank you for getting those guys away from me!”

“Don’t mention it. What’s a girl like you doing up here, anyway? Did your man stand you up?”

“No, that’s not the case! I’m just a little carsick, that’s all…”

“I see…”

The two stood silent for a moment. The woman smoked the last of her cigarette before throwing it onto the tarmac and extinguishing it with her shoe.

“Wanna go for a ride?” the woman asked, “My car is that white Hinode back there.”

Yuuna looked at the white Hinode. It was small and it had awkward proportions, at least compared to most cars that she had seen. Unlike other cars in the area, it looked clean and sterile, like a hospital room. Yuuna was still tired, but refusing the woman’s request just wouldn’t sit right with her. Besides, she was a woman so Yuuna felt like she could trust her.

“S-sure, ma’am!” Yuuna replied, “Show me the way!”

“Alright, follow me.”

The Hinode MID2, as the woman called it, was loud and buzzy. The woman explained to Yuuna that the engine was behind the passenger cabin, and that such a layout provided many benefits to the way the car drove. Yuuna was nervous, but there was something about the woman that gave off a calming aura.

“Alright, young lady.” the woman said, “Are you ready?”

“Anytime you are.” Yuuna replied.

“Alright then, here we go.”

The woman put the car into gear and pulled out onto the road. The woman accelerated gradually before entering the first corner at considerable speed. Yuuna was scared at first, yet despite traversing the corners much faster than the Hinode did, Yuuna was calm by the third corner. She looked over at the woman. She was calm, focused on her driving. Her movements looked clean and precise. The loud engine seemed to harmonize with the rest of the car and nothing felt out of place. Yuuna didn’t dare to converse with the woman lest she mess up her rhythm. The car made its way to the bottom of the mountain, passing other cars, before turning around and making its way back uphill.

“Are you alright there, young lady?” the woman asked.

“O-oh!” Yuuna stammered, “No, I’m fine!”

“I see. I thought you’d be one of those talkative types, but you’ve been quieter than a hallway at night.”

“I… usually talk a lot. Not in situations like this, though. Please pretend like I’m not here, ma’am!”

“O-kay?”

After a few minutes, the MID2 reached the rest area at the top of the mountain, and Kyoko and her friends were back. Riding with this woman truly was an experience that Yuuna didn’t really know how to put into words.

“That was… amazing, ma’am.” Yuuna said.

“Why, thank you!” the woman said, “Oh, the name’s Yagami by the way. Yagami Yumi. Sorry for not introducing myself earlier.

“Ah, Yagami-san! Very nice to meet you, my name is Utoda. Utoda Yuuna.”

“Utoda-chan, huh?” Yagami said, “You should come to Nakagawa Pass more often. And preferably with someone else so bastards like those boys earlier won’t harrass you!”

“I will, Yagami-san. When do you usually come here?”

“During the weekends or whenever I’m free, I suppose. Though I can get quite busy sometimes, so…"

“Ah, Yuuna!” Kyoko exclaimed, “There you are! We’ve been looking all over for you!”

Yuuna looked at the direction of Kyoko’s voice. She has returned from her run with Mitaka and the other street racers who are now standing around and chatting by a vending machine.

“Ah, Kyoko!” Yuuna said, “Sorry, I went for a ride earlier.”

“With Yagami-san, huh?" Kyoko replied, looking at Yagami, "Must be quite an experience. She’s one of the best drivers up here!”

“I-I can tell…”

“Oh, stop with the flattery.” Yagami said, laughing it off. Anyway, shouldn’t you kids be going home at this time? It’s 2AM, you guys are long overdue for some sleep!”

“Yes, we’re about to head back home, actually.” Kyoko said, “Anyway, thanks for giving Yuuna a ride. She might not have enjoyed her time up here otherwise. Let’s go, Yuuna!”

“Ah, yes!” Yuuna replied, “Thank you very much, Yagami-san!”

“No worries, Utoda-chan!” Yagami replied, “Come back here anytime!”

Yuuna, Kyoko, and Mitaka returned to the Garuda and drove down the mountain.

“Man, that was really fun.” Yuuna said, “I’m beat!”

“See, I told you it would be fun!” Kyoko said.

“I’m glad that you had a good time.” Mitaka added.

“Thanks, guys.” Yuuna said, “Although… Kyoko?”

“Yes?”

“May I stay over at your place tonight?”

“Wait, you’re not going home, Yuuna?”

“I told my parents that I was staying over at your place tonight. So can I stay, pretty please?”

“Hmm… Well, I’m not going home tonight either, Yuuna.”

“Wait, what?”

“I’m staying over at Mitaka’s place. I mean, if you don’t mind and he doesn’t mind…”

“Well, I don’t really mind, Utoda-chan.” Mitaka said, “I’m always happy to help Kyoko’s friends around.”

“Oi, don’t just ditch me like that!” Kyoko replied, “Anyway, are you cool with staying at a boy’s place tonight?”

“Well…” Yuuna said, “I guess I don’t have a choice…”

“Alright then, it’s settled!” Kyoko said, "Let’s hit the convenience store and head to your place!”

“Alright, let’s go!”

NOVEMBER 199X (PRESENT DAY)

SETTING - TOMB OF JESUS CHRIST

It was 1.45AM. Yumi and Yuuna have just finished practice runs up and down Nakagawa Pass and are now taking a break at the summit, at the tomb of Jesus Christ. Staring at the starry night sky, Yumi took a Gudang Gula Mild kretek cigarette out from her pocket and lit it, taking a puff of that clovey, carcinogenic goodness.

“Hey, Utoda?” Yumi asked.

Yuuna was unresponsive, looking at the beautiful, unadulterated night sky.

“Utoda?” Yumi asked again, “Ground Control to Major Utoda…”

Yuuna was still unresponsive, seemingly stuck in her own world.

OI, YUUNA!” Yumi exclaimed.

“Y-Yagami-san!” Yuuna replied in shock.

“Jesus, I’ve called you three times in a row! What were you daydreaming about?”

“Oh, it’s nothing, Yagami-san. Just something that happened a long time ago.”

“Good grief… Anyway, are you good for another run? These ECLIPSE fellas are gonna be tough to beat.”

“I know. They’ve got a Kaufmann rally car, a Nanahoshi that’s kind of like your car, and an EFI Komi! EFI! Does that mean that all other cars including our own are still carbureted?”

“Utoda, with your car being modified to THAT extent you should know the answer to that question.”

“Of course I know, haha! I was just messing with you. Anyway, we should go practice at the Shiromine Line. And once we reach the top, we’ll eat at the ramen restaurant with the beautiful aunt!”

“Utoda, it’s 2AM. No way in hell would that place be open right now, much less by the time we get to Shiromine. But if you win the next race, I’ll treat you to their House Special Tonkotsu Ramen.”

“Yes, please! I’ll do my best!”

“That’s the spirit!”

“Yes! In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen. Now let’s go, Yagami-san!”

Yumi threw her almost-finished kretek to the ground and extinguished it with her shoe, and the duo quickly made their way to their cars, ready for another round of practice. The race against ECLIPSE will most certainly be a difficult one…

峠バトル | TOUGE BATTLE

199█/11/26

The next battle would once again take place atop the Shiromine Line, on an increasingly chilly November night.

Yuzuki Ramen was interestingly enough, open. Perhaps someone had told them that there was going to indeed be a race happening, which meant potential customers for the restaurant despite such a late time. Business is business, after all.

Speaking of business, at last the fleet of big black machines would arrive, escorting the same two-door coupe from the other night. Out came Sigma, now wearing a black trenchcoat, and Omega who still wore the same suit, seemingly unfazed by the cold weather upon them.

“Brr… It’s quite- What in the world?” Said Sigma as they stepped out of the vehicle and looked at Omega, not at all bothered by the temperatures that approached zero. “You do you, I guess.”

“Let’s see how well each racer will fare against one another this time. Maybe both drivers on both hillclimb and downhill will be better matched. I will be standing in for X once more, you can expect this to be a more frequent thing from here on out.”

SECTOR 1 TIMES:

With the cars lined up, and the flag dropped, they ran across the line and like another race a few weeks ago, it seemed the battle had already been decided from just the launch of the vehicles. Utoda's fears had come true, and the Eclipse team seemed to be beyond her skill level.

SECTOR 2 TURNS: 5
SECTOR 2 LENGTH: 3.4 km

SECTOR 2 TIMES:
UTODA - 162.7s | 142.3s - KUROSE
SECTOR 2 AVG SPEED:

Unlike Nakagawa, Shiromine's straight roads didn't need all too much braking for the corners, yet either due to sheer nervousness of seeing the menacing-looking EFI line up next to her at the starting line, or the inability to maintain speed through the long winding corners of Shiromine, she was barely even able to lower the gap as much as she wanted to.

Kurose didn't feel tonight's race at all, there was a lot more mistakes than they were used to, but despite that, they still ultimately grabbed the win.

December had come, and the night time hunt for the next midnight racer still rages on.

The night is getting increasingly chilly, and the weather would finally drop to below freezing. There is yet to be any snow, and this year’s Christmas seems to be another dark one.

Tonight, a question began to arise in the crowd, would the jester need to play their card? Or will this be as decisive as the first? Both drivers are fierce, but the question of who’s fierceness is stronger is yet to be answered.

Interestingly, X’s fleet arrived well before any of the racers came, the coupe was not here, and only the SUVs would be present. There was no sign of the man from a few nights ago, and it was just Sigma and Omega who continued to preside over the races. Or at least, that’s how it was supposed to be until a fairly muted sneeze came from Sigma’s direction, followed by a robotic-sounding sniffling.

“I can’t stand this weather at all! Omega, you do it this time! After all, you’re the one who’s the most unfazed between us. I’m out!” Sigma yapped before climbing into the backseat of one of the larger trucks, clenching their trench coat tightly.

With a sigh from Omega, they signaled for the next two racers to line-up on the starting line.

Both of them had similar cars, a light and nimble midship rear-wheel-drive coupe. Yet the drivers contrasted oh so much.

A surgeon versus a hothead. One who operates with a purified style of precision, and the other who goes out and does whatever feels right. A syringe versus a firearm, both can kill, but achieve their goals in different ways, just like the drivers of tonight. But only one will reign supreme in tonight's battle.

Omega stepped out between them, their arms crossed, and the chequered flag in one of their hands. Without even counting down, they waved the flag as a test of either of the driver’s reflexes, but both were at their best in the moment, and both cars leaped across the line in near perfect harmony, and it was down to skill whoever could reach the first turn first.

SECTOR 2 TURNS: 5
SECTOR 2 LENGTH: 3.4 km
SECTOR 2 AVG GRADE: 11.3 °

SECTOR 2 TIMES:
YAGAMI - 53.1s | 49.1s - YAMAZAKI
SECTOR 2 AVG SPEED:
YAGAMI - 94.9 kph | 102.6 kph - YAMAZAKI

Yamazaki, with her rough personality reflecting onto her driving style, managed to barge her way through the surgeon's skillful lines, making her way into the lead despite her forgetting to buckle down her purple octopus plush, which flew around the cabin and distracted her slightly on the entrance to the first turn. Thankfully, it lodged itself behind the seat as she accelerated into the second turn, saving her from a potential problem later down the line.

SECTOR 3 TURNS: 3
SECTOR 3 LENGTH: 2.1 km
SECTOR 3 AVG GRADE: 6.3 °

SECTOR 3 TIMES:
YAGAMI - 40.5s | 37.3s - YAMAZAKI
SECTOR 3 AVG SPEED:
YAGAMI - 88.9 kph | 96.6 kph - YAMAZAKI

Yagami would remain calm all throughout the race despite being forced off into the rear of the Nanahoshi, watching its taillights carefully and sticking to the procedure she procured. Yagami could tell the driver she was facing was skillful, but due to the contrast between their styles, she found it hard to read through the opponent's turns, and she was rather distracted by the constant swaying of the Nanahoshi. Yagami would find herself slip occasionally, eventually culminating in a small amount of contact where she couldn't predict Yamazaki's braking point, which luckily did not throw either of the drivers' rhythms off.

SECTOR 4 TURNS: 6
SECTOR 4 LENGTH: 1.5 km
SECTOR 4 AVG GRADE: 3.9 °

SECTOR 4 TIMES:
YAGAMI - 50.4s | 46.8s - YAMAZAKI
SECTOR 4 AVG SPEED:
YAGAMI - 99.9 kph | 107.6 kph - YAMAZAKI

Through the final few corners, Yagami held on despite being fairly shook by the slight bump between her car and the Nanahoshi, but found it difficult to overtake on Nakagawa's tight roads. She thought she could score a win just through her own knowledge of the course, but it seemed that brute forcing one's way through something can get you somewhere, after all.

TOTAL RESULT
YAGAMI - 03:46 | 03:30 - YAMAZAKI
TOTAL AVG SPEED:
YAGAMI - 97 kph | 105 kph - YAMAZAKI

TONIGHT’S BATTLE WINNER: YAMAZAKI FROM ECLIPSƎ

"The battle's over, huh? That was quick." Sigma said, rolling the window down. "Well then, Omega, you already know the protocol from here. One team moves on, no jester, whatever."

WINNER OF TONIGHT'S BATTLE:
山崎公子
YAMAZAKI KIMIKO

“And you thought you had a chance with pitiful driving like that.”

With the battle over, Omega provided the results to the teams, and gave the information for the next teams to be going against one another.

Upon the teams’ arrival to the location, they were greeted with X’s usual fleet of big American cars, with his own personal sedan coming into the mix as well. If one would notice, another car joined them. Of course, it was from the land of burgers and fries.

Alongside this new car, and standing next to X and a Sigma who was desperately clenching onto their own coat whilst giving a deathly glare towards X, was a light-skinned, blonde-haired woman with blue eyes sparkling like those 50 stars on a certain flag, who one could tell was most definitely an American. She wore a loose but puffy jacket and had shorts that exposed more or less the entirety of the skin on her legs, yet was apparently unfazed by the below freezing temperatures, unlike the miserable creature nearby who was sniffling behind a mask.

“Greetings everyone. The teams racing tonight seem to be American fanatics, which attracted the interest of an acquaintance of mine.” X said.

“My, my, is that all you will refer to me as? A mere acquaintance of yours? Too bad X, I thought we were more than that.” The American girl giggled. To everyone’s surprise, she spoke perfect Japanese, although with a slight accent to it. As the girl spoke, Sigma’s head turned to her, and despite their identity hidden behind a mask, their gestures immediately signalled to someone that perhaps Sigma wasn’t too fond of the American girl’s way of talking about their relationship to X.

“I’m of course just kidding, my dear. Otherwise, I might get killed by a certain jealous soul over there~.” She teased once more. “Greetings everyone, I believe introductions are important here in Japan, so I will introduce myself briefly. I’m Eliza, an acquaintance of X from the United States. I was told that I will see something very special tonight, so I look forward to seeing what you can do for me.”

“Let’s get this going then, shall we?”

Eliza was handed a star-spangled banner by Omega, and she walked over towards the starting line. She glanced over at the Mercer and giggled at the driver in a teasing way. Before the flag would be dropped, she decided to do a little show for the drivers as a way to get them riled up. Sigma was visibly not pleased with this, and it took the combined force of X and Omega to prevent Sigma from running across the track to get her to stop.

Eventually, Eliza dropped the flag and off did the two vehicles go. The Dreisterne’s four-wheel-drive system gave it a headstart, but clearly Wakaba was not interested at getting a good launch, but a showy one, heating up his car’s tyres by letting it spin, and halting in front of Eliza so he could roll down the window and give a wink to her, before finally setting off and going after the Dreisterne.

Interestingly enough, despite both drivers being at their best in the moment, something about Eliza’s appearance gave Wakaba the extra motivation to be able to catch up to the Dreisterne despite the old, cumbersome, boat of a vehicle being theoretically outmatched by the German coupe.

SECTOR 2 TURNS: 8
SECTOR 2 LENGTH: 1.5 km
SECTOR 2 AVG GRADE: 3.1 °

SECTOR 2 TIMES:
TAKAO - 58.6s | 55.7s - WAKABA
SECTOR 2 AVG SPEED:
TAKAO - 92.1 kph | 96.9 kph - WAKABA

Wakaba managed to get close enough to the Dreisterne as the road began to loosen up slightly. There were less turns around this sector, and the Mercer managed to open up its mighty big block engine down the short bursts of straightaway on the course.

SECTOR 3 TURNS: 7
SECTOR 3 LENGTH: 1.9 km
SECTOR 3 AVG GRADE: 6.3 °

SECTOR 3 TIMES:
TAKAO - 75.9s | 72.1s - WAKABA
SECTOR 3 AVG SPEED:
TAKAO - 90.1 kph | 94.9 kph - WAKABA

The red-white-and blue coupe flung out column after column of smoke on the track as it burned rubber going sideways through the corners, still keeping up with the Dreisterne. Eventually, through a wide enough corner, Wakaba would slide his way on the outside with the coke bottle, big block hunk of pure American steel screaming its victory through.

“Yee-haw! I knew that American purebred could hand it to that [i have been advised not to type the word]!” Eliza said cheerfuly in English as she watched the battle from the screen that Omega held.

“You said this was going to be a humiliation, X, but once again you prove yourself wrong. Just like how it always goes in b-”

Before Eliza could continue, she was interrupted with a loud sneeze from Sigma.

“Oh. Bless you!” Said Eliza as sincerely as she could.

“Fuck off.”

SECTOR 4 TURNS: 11
SECTOR 4 LENGTH: 1.7 km
SECTOR 4 AVG GRADE: 5.1 °

SECTOR 4 TIMES:
TAKAO - 70.3s | 66.6s - WAKABA
SECTOR 4 AVG SPEED:
TAKAO - 87.1 kph | 91.9 kph - WAKABA

Wakaba stuck his hand out of the window with his hands doing the rock-and-roll sign as he slid is way to victory towards the end, with the liberal, loud and proud, 2nd-amendment pleading, bald eagle screaming, American V8 roaring its way through the quiet and conservative Japanese mountain.

TOTAL RESULT
TAKAO - 04:58 | 04:43 - WAKABA
TOTAL AVG SPEED:
TAKAO - 88 kph | 92 kph - WAKABA

X stared in disbelief as Wakaba crossed the line, while Eliza only continued to let out a hearty laugh. Meanwhile, Sigma didn't even bother helping out, and let out another sneeze as they climbed into the rear of X's sedan.

TONIGHT’S BATTLE WINNER: WAKABA FROM HELL’S EAGLE

"Well, well, well. I knew you could do it! Thanks for making me proud of my country once more, pal!" Eliza greeted the driver as he stepped out of the car, giving him a very warm hug and a smooch on the cheek, leaving an imprint of her lipstick-covered lips on the side of his face. "You've earned that one~!"

“You know what this means X! Half your stock in the Tasaday Hotel goes to me!”

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. I get it, you’re a natural-born gambler. Guess there goes my share of Vegas.”

WINNER OF TONIGHT'S BATTLE:
若葉隆三
WAKABA RYUZO

"America, fuck yeah!"

With the battle over, Eliza provided the results to the teams, and gave the information for the next race.

Understandable if you wanna give up on this tbh. The amount of effort you put in compared to the amount of effort a lot of the contestants (Including myself) put in its really not worth it. Next time however, if you do anything like this, I would make the RP a necessity, as your disapointment of people not rping wouldnt happen if RPing was like, the rule here

The RP here for my personal taste is a bit much of a meal without some meat. Maybe some pictures would help to retain the audience as they are more likely to continue on rather than just skimming through the text.

You’ve basically said it for me, next time around (assuming I have the motivation to go on after like 3 failed challenges), i’ll probably go easier on the writing and formatting. Enforcing RP would probably discourage a lot of people from entering which is why I don’t really want to have that as a rule.

Bit off more than I could chew again, the teams were a good experiment but I overestimated how much this community was willing to collaborate with each other (Even if it were separate cars they were working on).

I’m not even sure how the next ideas will work, the main originality point for this challenge was the clan battle concept, but seeing how unpopular it was and how it complicated RP, I don’t think it’s a viable idea anymore.

oh well

would you rather make the challenge how you want with less contestents, or make it simpler with more contestents, knowing it isnt what you truly want to do.
Basically, if your losing people for not RPing, then they arent ready for this sorta thing, and thats fine

Some of us may have also found out that characters we decided to use probably are less than optimal, which also meant dropping the enthusiasm we may have had

So i guess that also played very big part in whole thing…
