Hello everyone, here is a quick design i made of my idea for a sport saloon, i decided to post this topic on the engine forum as this is more about the engines.
It’s inspired by the alfa 159 but has RWD as i think thats the nature of a car.
Right now it has two engines, 1.6L and 2.0L turbo, they both have flat peaks that start at approx 5000rpm. I know thats the opposite of what most of you do, aggressive cam profile and rev limiter that limits the power that comes very late, well, i think this technic is ok only for race cars as they rev high all the time and they dont care about the smoothness of the power delivery, fuel consumption and engine wear, road car engines need to perform well on the low revs either and have smooth power delivery, also, as the power comes in lower rpm and has larger power band, the car accelerates faster, feels more powerful and has better fuel consumption. My intention is to make them reach their boost at 1500rpm but right now its impossible.
About the car, it’s inspired by the alfa 159 but has RWD as i think thats the nature of a car, it has 6 speed gearbox while 6th is overdrive and small face to make it more aerodynamic
Those engines are quite nice for a somewhat-fast saloon (164 and 206hp isn’t really much for saloon cars these days), but for a sport saloon you really need a bigger engine. I suggest 2.5L I4T with around 250-350hp depending on whether you want to focus on sheer power or on a balance between power, usability, economy, reliability and so on. Or maybe you’d want a 3.5L NA V8 to get the same sort of power? It’s your choice
Yea, most of what we call sport saloons are cars like M3 and evo’s with big ass turbo’s.
I dont know why most of the petrol heads around here (if not all of them) only cares about the final hp figure and the combustion efficiency percentage, what about delivery and usability? car’s layout? is peak horsepower the only thing that defines a sport car? the Mazda MX-5 with its only 160hp isnt a sports car? its a brilliant sports car.
And bdw, if you will search for the definition of sports car or sport saloon, you will find nothing about horsepower.
My car has a wide body, RWD and a 53% weight at the front, its suppose to be parallel to the alfa 159 but with RWD, which is also why it has economic engines like the 159. But as i said that it has only two engines at the moment, here is the next engine, Its suppose to be a V6 but since its not available yet and straight 6 with that capacity is too long to fit, its a V8 at the moment.
The MX-5 is also way under 3300lbs. A 328I weighs the same and has 240 hp. If you’re going to call it a sports car, it really needs around 300 at that weight.
