NA-Turbo hybrid?

So with recent events I decided to try something: a hybrid between NA and turbo. A small turbo working in on the low revs, improving economy, allowing for some more gasguzzling fuel ratios, and smoothing the power on higher revs.

But how does it compare? To do so I made a fully NA version of the engine:

Now the obvious question is, which is fastest? To test I whacked both engines onto the same old model I made, new is hybrid, old is NA:

So it’s faster in a straight line, but what about a track?

Near identical. + 500$ extra spent on engine.
I didn’t change anything besides for engines, a bit of final ratio adjusting and cooling. Probably you can achieve better results with finetuning, but this was just a quick experiment :stuck_out_tongue:

Your economy is under 25%, so it’s not very economical. Are you asking about the ability to disable turbochargers on turbocharged engines? That’s probably not going to be in the game.

We’re talking about 90’s sportscars here :stuck_out_tongue: And no, I think you missed the point, it’s just a small test, to see what effect a nearly perfectly flat power would have, and as an alternative to VVL.

With the n/a offering lower weight, cost to build, cost to service, and aerodynamic drag plus higher economy and response I don’t see the draw of that turbo. Either boost the turbo power higher or stick with the N/A for your sports car.

You got a point there, but this has an use where you’re “limited” to a certain amount of HP, such as the famous “gentlemen’s agreement” of sportscar producers in Japan to limit the power to 276 hp.


Keeps the engine quite potent for the amount of max HP it churns out.

Ahh yes the agreement, in that situation yes, if you’re looking for the 300zx/supra/skyline/rx7 contender then by all means turbo away, just keep playing with the turbo setting to level that torque out.

If I may suggest a turbocharger build, use about 50 mm compressor, 35 mm turbine, A:R ratio of 1.05-1.10, and boost of 12.5 psi. The turbocharger sizes aren’t very accurate because I don’t have your specific engine, but that should be just about the proper build for a flat torque curve. :slight_smile:

You could potentially gain better economy by taking some engine capacity away from the turboed one then bringing back the power with boost, that’s quite a popular economy tactic these days.

How do you have that advanced analysis and track test feature? I’m Turbocharged as well and don’t have that :S

Ah thankyou.

The reason that the turbo engine isnt faster is because of the added weight and turbo lag hindering the acceleration out of the cornors, plus the game factoring in that the car is harder to drive because of the previous factors.
