Nineties Econobox Challenge. *revisions and reviewing*

Yup, send me a pm with your car by the 6th.

I’m just going to say, I found a way to go max strop on this. I’m a bit bored of making cars that aim at the challenge. It’s time to see just how much power one can cram into a shitbox that still gets 40mpg xD

lol… i quite literally just submitted the exact opposite of what strop is trying to do…

a facelift and a rebuilt version of the Komodo Logic from the 1990.
this time with an FF trans

Consider me as a competitor in your target market

Entering the brand-new for 1993, Baltazar Quark, here on mid-range trim 1.4 EX.

Based on the requirements of the american market, this fuel efficient car has a 74 hp engine and a radio fitted as standard. We felt that the 1.1 BS entry-level car offered in Europe and Latin america wouldn’t be up to the american standards, thus we decided to use this higher powered, better equipped car.

I had this car lying around from the time I tested the formulas and limits for the somwos, and wasn’t changed in any way to fit the requirements of this competition better. I only chose it over the 1.1 engined trims, despite it being more economical and cheaper, because those were too slow, at 18 seconds to 100.

Welp, Leo’s in it. I’ve lost already.

Well, Leo did say he didn’t change anything (who are we kidding, it’s already a great econobox no matter the metric).

Meanwhile, I realised that the original Fore Birdie would have cost not very much, especially if I were to retcon the use of the VTEC system which was very expensive. So I fell to the dark side and I think the car may be… quite quick. It’s fast around the track, sure, but… the doors may fall off.

this is all this challenge is about: youtube.com/watch?v=YDDOHPssLrQ

What’s this? Why, it looks like an advert from an early 90s car magazine…

Built on borrowed time between all three of the Storm Automotive companies, the Storm Spiteful has arrived.

Using a re-badged and cheapened version of one of Pharte Auto Works’ engines, with the steel and white enamel paint supplied by Arctic Motors, and squeezed into the retired-ten-years-ago production line back at Storm Automotive, the Spiteful isn’t exactly the most prestigious car.

So, why buy this over some other company’s design? Well, for starters, it’s not a rinky-dink little two-door coupe, or three door hatch. This is a proper 5-door wagon. We also have an engine that requires little in the way of expensive service, so you have nothing to fear about bringing the car in for maintenance, which means it’ll be on the road for a very long time.

Have we also mentioned it’s not some tiny little toy car? You won’t feel like the entire world is laughing at you when you’re driving a Spiteful.

(Note to my fellow competitors: No offense meant to your cars. 1990-1996 was a time where Storm Automotive was, at least in my written lore so far, not doing so good, so they took it upon themselves to try to smear other car companies with mud in hopes of boosting sales. The tactic probably didn’t work, and certainly wouldn’t have earned them many friends in the marketplace. By 1997, things picked up because the quality returned to the cars, and they fired the marketing ‘genius’ behind the smear campaigns in all the car advertisements. I’m just playing it true to the company for the year.)

well… at least you didn’t go overboard with the taillights again.
that’s something

also. for fun. i also tried to make something for SPEED, POWAH

end up with almost 100HP/liter engine out of a 1.1l with 108HP
getting slightly more than 40mpg, 8.9s 0-60 and low 2:30 around the ATT.
while surprisingly… still gets more than 73 reliability
i don’t understand.

The extremely crazy tail light designs take a lot of effort, and don’t exactly fit the theme of a really crappy 90’s car.

Nice specific output koolkei. That’s what I was getting until I started feeling my total output was nowhere near enough. I sacrificed a bit of efficiency but have what I consider to be “adequate” now :stuck_out_tongue:

Reliability remains good if you’re sensible with the redline and the boost. And with no negative quality, basic parts and decent panels trim reliability starts out at about 85.

To be honest mine is really shonky at 64.6. Because I made the steel panels really flimsy.

hmmm

strop’s level of ‘adequate’…

it’s at least twice mine isn’t it?

Sounds like you built an Alfa again

As I was just asked in PM I shall confirm in thread, yes revisions will be allowed, please show some restraint in the number of PM’s however.

Hmm, as I see for this type of challenge, everyone can feel like a winner, yes?

Yep… consider what the MM Excelsior was like in an earlier challenge. It looked cool, it drove like the blazes, but if you so much as shut the door too hard, it’d probably fall off. Same deal here.

But it goes really fast. I am working on a nice tagline for the ad. Something like if you must drive a shitbox, you’ll want to get from A to B as fast as possible or something… has to have punchy phrasing…

I love how almost every advert so far is just a re-iteration of “Well I mean… It’s not… so bad…”

Then you’ve got mine, trying to reassure people that you should at least buy the bigger shitbox, because there’s no way to recover your dignity after squeezing yourself out of a shoebox.
