One Last Hurrah [FINAL RESULTS]

V6 Vandals - Day 2, 2-4p - “Road Music”

The radio broke through the racket in the cab, stopping the proper game of “I Spy” they had going on.

“Ana from Shitbox Brothers to V6 Vandals. We’re catching up, ladies and gentlemen!”

“Huh?” Cody said, cutting Luke off, who undoubtedly had a clever response planned, by the way he turned to look at Cody despite being the driver.

“We’re catching up and only 20 or so miles away from you. Get ready for an overtake!” Ana teased.

“Jokes on you. We’re stopping for dinner. Hardly sporting to count an overtake on a parked car.” Luke teased back. “We got invited by the Rednecks.”

“Have fun eating roadkill!” Alejandro teased back, causing the Vandals to laugh.

As they approached the Beef and Bird, it didn’t take long for Luke to spot the huge truck that Team Redneck were driving. He parked the Truckling right next to the huge T-25, and the four of them got out and headed inside.

Luke spotted Otis and Jake at a table, and so they settled nearby, giving some space out of respect, but being close enough for casual conversation. Once Amy, Cody, and Jake Storm had settled at the table, Luke opened a leg compartment and took out a roll of fabric. He unrolled it and constructed a chair from the steel tubes within, then stretched the fabric over the steel frame. Spotting Otis giving a questioning glance, Luke answered the unspoken question.

“It’s highly impolite to destroy someone else’s chairs. I weigh 600 pounds, downside of being a re-purposed military robot. I have armor plating that can stop most small arms fire, but that means I’m a bit on the heavy side.” Luke said, before sitting on his constructed chair.

Morale: +8 (+2) - Food and Company, two things that get better when you’re not on the road.
Fatigue: +18 (-2) - We’re not in the Truckling, so we’re not hurting. Also, food!

Day Two, 4PM to 6PM

Nothing much to add from last session since we haven’t reached Sudbury yet. The snow has finally stopped falling so I was able to push on at a greater pace but it didn’t stop the monotony from settling in deep. I’m really looking forward to dinner and I’m really, REALLY looking forward to getting a good night’s rest later on tonight…

But for now all I can do is stare at a snow covered horizon, listen to Andrew gently snore in the passengers seat and pray no-one hits us on account of the slippery conditions!

Northbound to Sudbury, Ontario

Jack had kept his cool on the long drive north, having removed the snow chains earlier after the conditions improved. Despite growing fatigue, he persevered, knowing that he could reach Sudbury in short order at the pace he was maintaining. That’s when Chris made another suggestion…

“After our next stop, we should bump our pace up again, to keep those slightly ahead of us within our sight.”

“Sounds like a good idea. That’s assuming we actually get a chance to stop again.”

Vince replied: “This could work. However, our fatigue level is high enough for us to consider making a rest stop in Sudbury instead of further down the road.”

Bob’s response was short and to the point. “We’ll look into it. Now that the light is fading, an early break could come in handy.”

Jack nodded in agreement, and continued to drive north in the direction of Sudbury.

Currently out of town for the week, at best I’ll be able to type small bits on the phone. I’ll do updates after I get back.
I am putting 2000 miles on my 19 year old truck this week so it’s like I am still playing

Day Two, 6PM to 8PM, Sudbury, Ontario

In this session we managed to reach Sudbury without incident. Andrew woke up then proceeded to start rummaging about in his pockets…

A: “I’m sure it’s in here somewhere?”

P: “What has it got in its pocketses, my precious?”

A: “Knock it off! You know Gollum gives me the creeps!”

P: ‘laughs tiredly’ “It just seemed to fit the moment… Wotcha looking for?”

A: “Kyle gave me a list of good restaurants in every major town. I figured now is a good time to use it!”

P: “You’d be right on that point. Where should we go?”

A: “Say’s here… Beef n Bird. Take me to Beef n Bird James!”

P: “Yesss Master, good master be nice to Smeagol, Gollum!!!

A: “I said, cut that out!”

P: “OK then…”

We found a suitable car park and entered the Sports Bar. We found a relatively secluded corner and we ordered our meal. Andrew ordered himself a large serve of Poutine followed by a BnB Burger w/ onion rings and I chose the small serve of Poutine followed by a Pastarami sandwich w/ onion rings.

We ate in companionable silence, enjoying our meals and savouring every bite, but we knew that soon we’d have to hit the road as we wanted to stop at 8PM tonight and that was over two hours into the future…

But for now, all we had to do was eat, drink and digest in the comforting surrounds of a Canadian sports bar!

Bill was happy enough to stop at the Chocolate factory, but really didn’t think it was fair when the vote came in at 2:1 “Bill’s Shout”. The trip from Barrie to Craighurst was short and uneventful, barring the chattering noise in the back… Wookiee had his window down. Opting not to take the tour, with the fact they were supposed to be racing, they loaded up good, walking out with around 12kg of tangible happiness. Heading a little further north to Coldwater, the museum captured Bill’s imagination for a little too long, ultimately forcing Toni to threaten hot-wiring the car and leaving him stranded. Bill had a giant sook session, verging on tears, until they told him he could choose where they would stay for the night.

4:00PM-6:00PM

Bill: Do you think we’re anywhere near another team? What did they say the CB range is?
Wookiee: Firstly, no, and B, they didn’t… but it’s like 7 or 8 kays or something.
Bill: Did you say “first” and “B”?
Wookiee: No, I said “Firstly”. And I can list stuff however I want.
Bill: You can’t start a sentence with “And”, you barbarian.
Wookiee: A common misconception, my boy. It’s not actually against any written rules.
Bill: Huh? Did you just call me your boy?
Toni: Never mind, Bill. Wookiee, stop stirring him.
The radio is playing some forgotten song
So, being old people, they turn it up.
They continued (obviously) in the growing dark, something about cold…

Having passed the next waypoint, Jack pulled into TownPlace Suites, feeling exhausted but relieved and satisfied that they had made it this far without any problems.

“It was brutal… but we made it!” he sighed.

While Bob and Vince were unpacking, Chris devised a plan for the next day.

“Maybe if we pick up the pace tomorrow, we should be able to close the gap on the leaders. It may not be the only way to keep up with the opposition, but it could turn out to be the best way given the circumstances.”

But Jack was already asleep, and it was not long before his teammates were also in bed.

Zach: Hello? Oh, hi Frank. You did? Cayman Islands you say? Make that shit public. Turn it in as evidence! I know it’s a risk to your job. But it may get our boss off the hook. Either it will prove she’s guilty, or it’ll keep whoever is responsible from using the money until this is all figured out. Yeah. Okay. Talk to you later. Best of luck. Bye.

Blake: What was that about?

Zach: Frank found out where that trail of unaccounted for money was going. It’s pooled up in a Cayman Islands account.

Marc: Sounds like embezzlement to me.

Zach: Yeah, Eleanor Ventnor is the major shareholder of the company. It makes no sense for her to embezzle money from herself.

Marc: Not everyone thinks big picture, sometimes they only care about short term gains.

Zach: I don’t know, this all seems a little fishy to me. I mean, she gets arrested for embezzlement almost immediately after I discover this money being siphoned off. It seems a little too sudden.

Blake: You think she was framed?

Marc: It would make a good smoke screen. She’s the majority shareholder/CEO so she’d automatically be a suspect. And it certainly would take the heat off someone else if they were truly up to something.

Zach: That’s why I want that account made public. If it becomes a piece of evidence in the upcoming trial, then it is frozen.

Luigi: Meaning if someone else was doing the embezzling, they wouldn’t be able to touch the account.

Zach: Exactly. I wish there was more I could do from here.

Blake: Sounds like you’ve done quite a bit.

Zach: I feel helpless.

Blake: You threw a wrench into an embezzling scheme. All you can do now, is check the news for any updates.

( Due to being busy in RL, I missed the last couple updates. Apart from removing the tire chains, nothing really exciting happened during this segment.)

(In the elevator on the way up to their room)

“Is everything squared away?” Kyle asked.

“It’ll be fine,” Hank replied. “Gonna have a lot of paperwork waiting for me at home.”

“I hate to ask, but do I still have a job?”

Hank gave him a puzzled look. “Of course. Why wouldn’t you?”

“Well, if you’re getting a divorce, doesn’t she get half of your business?”

“Ah. No. There was a prenup. I was just making sure to cross all the t’s and dot all the i’s.”

The door slid open, and they walked past a disheveled guest in a robe who was waiting for the elevator.

“Wow, she actually signed one?” Kyle asked incredulously. “I mean, weren’t you kind of… you know… poor, when you were younger?”

“Mostly. But I there was a trust account for me that was to be released when my grandmother died. It wasn’t a huge windfall, but enough to get myself up and running. I wanted to make sure that stayed with me.” Hank shrugged. “I guess that’s why I got married so young, too. There was this loophole dealing with the account and timing. I had to get the prenup signed and the asset secured before she died if I wanted to ensure it wasn’t in play if something should happen. I know it sounds kind of sick, but my trust attorney insisted on it at the time.”

“Weird, but it makes sense I guess.” Kyle swiped the key card over the security pad and opened the door to their room. He paused for a moment. “You sure you’re okay? Do you want to find a bar or something?”

“For once, I have to say that’s the last thing I need. I just want to sleep and get this dumpster fire of a night over with.”

Day Two, 8PM to 10PM

We overstayed our departure at Beef n Bird by a lot. One beer became a couple of beers and there was a game on the telly and then I woke up from a micro-sleep. Not a good sign. I got Andrew’s attention away from the game and explained the situation…

P: “That list got somewhere good to stay? Here in Sudbury I mean.”

A: “Yeah, looks like… The Moonlight Inn and Suites! Kyle recommended the Moonlight Inn and Suites”

P: “Good. Make a reservation because there’s no way we’re pushing on any further tonight”

A: “Good plan. I need all the rest I can get since I’m driving tomorrow”

P: “Don’t remind me…”

So we said goodbye to the Beef n Bird with another round of beers then headed to the Moonlight Inn and Suites. Along the way we stopped at the Pioneer Energy fuel station to top off the tank then we parked up for the night at the Inn. After a long, hot shower I went to bed, where I fell fast asleep, as did Andrew, who was in the hot seat for tomorrow’s action.

Here’s hoping his enthusiasm doesn’t see us stuck in a snowdrift somewhere!

Day 2, 18:00-20:00

What little they saw of the Grundy Lake Provincial park made the team consider stopping for a quick look, but Toni insisted that they keep moving. She thought there was minimal benefit and a lot of potential loss in such a move. Without the falling snow, even in the poorer light, Bill had more confidence in what he could do behind the wheel.
Toni: So, what do you think, Bill?
Bill: About?
Toni: How far we’ll go before we stop? You’re normally the one itching for a break, but you don’t seem to be interested at all.
Bill: Aunt Toni, you’ve taught me a few things on our road-trips, and maybe I’m starting to come around to your way of thinking. I figure that we’ll drive an hour or so past the checkpoint. Some teams will stop there, and we’ll have more of a lead over them.
Wookiee: That only works to our advantage if we get back on the road at the same time as they do, which will depend on how far ahead we are now.
Toni: Okay then. Wookiee, what does the map tell us?
Wookiee: Let’ see… out of Sudbury, on the 55, then right to the 17… which is still the Trans-Canada.

20:00-22:00

They reached Sudbury around about 8 O’clock, and did what you do at a checkpoint. A little difficulty starting the time bomb, Bill assumed it was from the long run, then sitting for a few minutes. Leaving Sudbury behind, travelling west down the 55, an estimate of their fuel range was made.
Wookiee: So, I reckon, we’ve got enough to get to Webbwood. If we’re short, I’ll push.
Toni: You’ll both push! Hell, even I’ll have to get out.
Bill: We’ve got the Jerry in the back…have a little bit of faith in him.
Toni: You trust him?
Bill: No. I told you to. You found him, you kept him.
Wookiee gave Bill a quick jab in the arm.
It was exactly at that moment the car stuttered, just for a second.
Wookiee: Oi! Drive properly!
Bill: Not me, the car.
Toni: Ha! Been waiting for that.
Bill: For what?
Toni: It’s a symptom. You guy’s bought a bomb, I’ve been trying to work out what’s still broken.
Bill: Well? What is it?
Toni: Nothing serious. Just keep driving. Make sure you let me know if anything else feels wrong.

They made it past Webbwood, and into Massey. It was here that Bill decided to call it a night. The Mohawk just past the Shell looked like the perfect place.
Bill: Looks like we’re alone.
Wookiee: (looking up from his phone) Doesn’t mean it’ll stay that way. Says here there’s another car not far behind us. :smirk:
Bill: Don’t do anything.
Wookiee: Like?
Bill: Sticky tape over their fuel filler door, baby oil on the windscreen, removing indicator globes, or whatever else you were thinking. Just don’t.

V6 Vandals - Day 2, 4-6p - “Dinner Time!”

After their meal, the Vandals piled back into the Truckling and took off down the road, their mighty front-wheel-drive dragging them along.

“Well, that was worth it.” Amy said, smiling. “Sure, it puts us a little behind schedule, but we got food and we had some time outside of the Truckling, so we’re better off for it.”

Cody and Jake just nodded, fighting the “I’ve had food so now I’m sleepy” nod-offs. It didn’t help that it was closing in on night again, and they’d spent all day in their little shoe-box of a truck.

A little after 8:00, Amy asked Luke, “Mind finding a hotel or something? I know that you’re okay for a while more, but…”

“Not a problem. I need a bit of time out of the car anyway. The constant bumps keep knocking my cameras out of alignment, and it gets to be annoying to keep having to manually re-center them. Especially because it’s hard to do that without having a static frame of reference.” Luke said.

“Ah, kinda like crossing your eyes, right?” Cody asked.

“Similar. Equally disorienting, and it’s certainly a driving hazard. It doesn’t take long to recalibrate, but… As I said, stationary frame of reference.” Luke replied.

“So, how were you supposed to handle combat? We know military vehicles aren’t known for a comfortable smooth ride, and…” Jake started, only for Luke to cut him off.

“First and foremost, I’m a prototype that had the funding cut at the last moment. Second, this issue of optical realignment is something that’s started happening within the last three years. I suspect a servo has gotten weak, or there’s some slack in one of the control lines. Third, I can still shoot straight without having binary vision. It’s not necessary for me to have physical depth perception when I have a built-in range-finder, after all, but it does give me a greater field of view. So I could technically put up with it and keep going, but you tell me, do you want to spend the next 48 hours sitting there in that seat?”

“Not really. I see your point.” Jake said.

The Vandals cruised into Iron Bridge a little after 8 PM, and stopped at the Village Inn. The truck was shut down, and the four of them walked in, rented rooms, and proceeded to head to bed. Or in Luke’s case, to update social media and annoy everyone with the fact that this time, he had his own bloody room, and that window was going to be open.

Luke’s Social Media Update

“So, we’ve made it quite a bit further than we were last night. Called an early stop because we had tired teammates and a lot of ground to cover coming up, so it made no sense to push on. Especially now that I’ve checked some of the other teams’ media pages and found plenty were having accidents or near-accidents. We’re still in it for now, and while we have problems of our own, I think we can deal with them easily enough.”

Team Letto RP Attempt:
Welcome to the French River.

Lord: Ah nice! We finally made it to the French River.

Coconut: Yeah, I’m Surprised The Citta Lasted as long as it did with the Balance Shaft Issue, Along with the fact it’s only a Small City Truck doing a Long haul trip on the Highway most of the time.

Lord: Yep, but at least we made it here to the French River , Good thing we Called around ahead of time to find a Lodge that can Check us in Late at night for a overnight Stay, now let’s get going to our Accommodations at Loons Landing & Check in, Early to Bed Early to Rise, Hopefully the River Condition is good enough so we can get a bit of fishing in before we leave, Ice or otherwise. I’m not sure what’s it’s like here in the Winter, I Usually come in the Summer with Family to go Fishing for a Week around Canada Day. Good Times.

Coconut: Yeah, This is where you Caught your 1st Big Fish Correct?

Lord: Yep, Back in 2013 During the Trip with Family I Caught a Walleye & 2 Pike, the Walleye was the only one we got from the Trip, I’d Show you a Pic but it’s being Held Ransom by Photobucket.

Coconut: Yeah, I heard about that, What a bunch of BS, Hopefully the Company goes under cause of it.

Lord: I Agree, Anyway let’s go & Check in so we Can get a Rest, if we can get settled in & Sleeping by 11 we can get up at around 5-7 to have breakfast & Check Conditions for some Fishing before hitting the road to Sudbury around 10.

Coconut: Sounds good to me, let’s go.

RL version,
8-10pm between Las Vegas NV, and Flagstaff AZ

Headlights start dimming when engine rpm’s exceed 5000, (note downshifting to 3rd to climb hills at speed).

Later at cruise lights get much brighter, battery light illuminates, brake caution light illuminates, and air bag light starts flashing. 5 minutes later everything returns to normal.

Suspected bad voltage regulator in alternator. Stopped in Flagstaff at 11 for the night.
