Okay, so I just thought of this, please point out any errors.
Make the body and pan just the center section of an F1 car, devoid of aero (Except for a front wing-style thing that we can mount a lip to), with a windshield over the cabin, and with the wheels inside of it (Put the suspension somewhere odd) and then make it possible to offset the wheels by like 6 feet front and back.
Could this be done?
(Obviously the specs would be ridiculous for any market, could probably get it down to 900 lbs and have such a wide track and low roof profile it’d be ridiculous)
To elaborate: I’m not entirely familiar with the process of building the bodies, but fairly sure that this would break the “passenger space” zone calculations, given the way those zones are designated and bound to the morphing of the mesh.
There have been updating since this thread was made, so I’m wondering if it may be possible now, or if it may ever be possible in the future. The new “Space Frame” chassis is begging to be made into something like an Ariel Atom.
It’s just not possible by the way the frame works. The most you could get is a narrow frame on a body with wide fenders and offsetting the wheels a lot, though I don’t know if there’s a limit to the offset. Open roof designs are also not possible due to the interiors not being visible.
Seems that the body itself could have the interior build in for something like this, so the roof of the body would be the interior. I see the biggest challenge, as you mentioned, as being the wheels. Do you think it may be possible to build a body that looks as though it has an open top interior?
It would be possible, but it wouldn’t look good. There’s a limited number of materials available for bodies, and too much detail can lead to performance issues (not to mention limit the morphing). The interior would be low-detail and matte black, and maybe have some glossy black and chrome sections, or body coloured sections, and would be at odds with the interior settings. Either way, that sort of car isn’t really within the scope of the game.
Sadly, I don’t believe open-wheel cars are possible at this time, but one could try to build something like a closed wheel Formula 1 car; it wouldn’t be that much heavier than a real-world F1 racer and would actually look pretty cool, if you ask me.
I like this idea. It would also have significantly better aerodynamics. Exposed rotating wheels are one of the worst things you can do for aerodyamics besides having her body shaped like a shipping container.
