Pay It Forward Design Challenge [B1418, Closed]

Year 1991: Rallies are popular all over the country, and you, a young mechanic with race driving skills, don’t want to miss this race, the 1991 Great German Open Rally, in which cars are split into several categories based on price. Since you don’t have much money, you enter the lowest class, with a $5500 price limit, and of course you buy a car, a bad car. A 1977 Seishido Achernar AR25 1.2BX, the second cheapest Achernar ever produced, the first place going to it’s pre-facelift version, based on the ancient 1969 P-Series engine design. It’s worn out pretty badly after being drove for 120000km, at least it’s a sub 800kg pocket rocket with lots of potential, but your budget is ridiculously tight, turn that aluminium lump under the hood in a screaming monster and prepare your tin can for serious off-road action, if you dare :smiling_imp:

Restrictions
Total Cost: Under $5500
Tech Year has to remain 1977 both chassis and engine
You can’t alter engine displacement, block and head material, number of valves and head type
You can’t use race exhaust headers, race air intake and semi slicks,it has to remain street legal
You can’t use forced induction, as the old 1.2 would break under the pressure
You need an Average Reliability rating over 60,repeated bad race conditions are horrible for the old lump
You need to use Regular Unleaded fuel
You can’t alter the stock 4-speed’s spacings (but you can swap in a 5-speed if you want)
You need an Offroad rating of at least 20 to enter the rally
You need a Tameness rating over 50, the track is dangerous
You need a Safety rating over 15, same reason as above
You can’t change chassis material, suspension type and body material
You have to keep the car FR with a longitudinal engine
You need a Loudness rating under 50, you don’t want to be deafened by an Achernar, do you?
You can strip the interior
You can’t install driver assists, that’s pretty pointless when you’re not even making 100hp
You can’t use quality sliders over +6
You can only add wings and lips, don’t touch headlights, grilles et cetera
You can make it any color you like, extra awesome points if it’s flashy
You need an Economy rating better than 11.50 lt/100km, extra fuel slows your already sluggish tin can down
You can’t use underbody cladding

Goal

Beat last year’s record setting run of 7:35 on the BRC Shakedown Stage 1 track, which you can find right here:

Good luck, and don’t blow up that thing into a thousand pieces

Reminds me of the jalopnik article about some guy who managed to sneak his rusty M3 tin can into a WRC rally stage.

^ in Mexico and actually beat a few people!!!^ jalopnik.com/5497042/how-a-500-craigslist-car-beat-400k-rally-racers

I remember reading that!

Oops, forgot to tell i used mod fixtures, Pyrlix’s boxy 80’s grille and plastic/chrome strips, you can find them in Pyrlix’ 3D Department thread or in the Community Mod Pack #01

Anyways, have you started working on it? I’m curious to see how much you can push out of that jalopy

(My own record is 7:25:90 iirc)

I have been able to do the challenge (just)

Tameness 52.1
Safety 15.7
Avg. Reliability 67.4
Offroad 20.29
Fuel economy 10.14lt/100km
Total cost 5335.40

Here she is if you want to see and comment on my masterpiece.

It is the year 2000 and the endurance racing hype is about to peak in the UK. The Britcar 24hour race is upcoming and you have been entered but the only car you could seem to get your hands on is a 1994 Sabre Contenza 1.8. With only 25000 miles on the clock, this 817kg 95hp hatchback seems to have potential. The only problem is funds and time.

Restrictions!
Total Cost: Under $12500
Tech Year has to remain 1994 both chassis and engine
You can’t alter engine displacement, block and head material, number of valves and head type
You can use race exhaust headers, race air intake and semi slicks,it’s a race car for pete’s sake
You can’t use forced induction, as you lack the time to properly tune the engine
You need an Average Reliability rating over 60,she needs to go around Silverstone for 24hours straight
You can use super unleaded
You can alter the stock 5-speed’s
You need a Tameness rating over 40, you need to control her even when your tired
You need a Safety rating over 20, all the fatal accidents in the 80’s forced MSA to change their safety regulations
You can’t change chassis material, suspension type and body material
You have to keep the car FF with a transverse engine
You need a Loudness rating under 45, an unfortunate sound curfew has been enforced at silverstone
You can strip the interior
You can’t change driver assists, you don’t have the time for that nonsense
You can’t use quality sliders over +6
You can only add wings and lips, don’t touch headlights, grilles et cetera
You need an Economy rating better than 40mpg (UK), you don’t want to spend most of your race in the pits now, Do you?
You can’t use underbody cladding

Goal!
You have to beat the Sabre Mantis SR black’s time of 2.47.18 around Silverstone.

You must record a time of 1:18.85 around the Top Gear Test Track.

Rileybanks! You have 18hrs to finish, or confirm that you are working on it, else it goes to Strop.

Yeah I’ve noticed he’s been unwell, so he said in the Group B rally thread. I’ll be on standby.

Is the tech year changeable?
(I’ve been away for a few days, meaning this is the first chance I’ve had at the challenge.)

No, the engine year is 2015, that’s unchangeable. Same with the platform year of 1999.

Done! This taught a few things to so with engine design and tuning.

Ho ho ho, okay riley, you’re challenging me next.

DO YOUR WORST :smiling_imp:

But probably, make sure the challenge is actually doable, otherwise 99% chance I’ll be able to tell it’s impossible, but the 1% of me that refuses to buy it will get really bothered!

The ultimate challenge for strop, build a reasonable mass production city car… dun dun duhhh :-p jks

I dunno… he did a good job of modding out the Stumpy when I gave it to him.

Ultimate challenge for strop is to make a car in less than 3 hours :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh snap Leo :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll have you know that the 1975 turbo cup car was a sixty minute build! (Okay okay, I know that’s still a fairly long time, but you know, replica styling!)

P.s. really, please don’t set me a 3 hour time limit, I’ll probably fail!

That would have been more appropriate for me, since almost ALL of my comp entries took DAYS to make, especially because i have to choose a Seishido model to tackle the challenge with, then rework the aesthetics in a feasible way, THEN i select an engine to modify, yup, that’s why i post the cars 10 minutes before the deadline

(Please, i beg you, don’t give me a time limit in the second round)
