Personal rig update - new cooler unboxing (Cryorig M9i)

finally upgrading from my laptop VERY soon

the rig is new, but some of the parts aren’t

what i have aquired so far. haven’t been assembled yet

new stuff

used stuff

to be aquired
GPU: aiming for a used 7950/7970 (or a 4GB model of an R9 380 if i get lucky)

future necessary upgrade
HDD: i only have an SSD for now
Monitor: i’m only plugging it to a currently available monitor that haven’t seen much use at home, but it’s a 15.6" 1366x768 with only VGA input. the monitor’s not that old, but the technology it uses is ancient.
keyboard: same story, using what’s laying around.
HSF: out of budget for a ‘decent’ hsf. stock will have to do, and no overclocking till then.

Nice! Why are you looking for such an old card, though? AMD’s RX 480 came out and it’s offering the highest price per performance ever. If $200 is out of your budget then the 460 and 470 are releasing soon for $100 and $150, respectively.

because fucking shitty tax and money exchange rate.

the supposed to be $200 which is supposed to be Rp 2.640.000 turns out to be Rp. 3.600.000 or $272

and a used HD7970 is decent with price around Rp 2.100.000 or $151.1 with performance being still one of the best ones available. simply, it’s the best value GPU for the price in the used market here.

although, if i can get lucky, the 2nd option is an R9 380. the price is exactly the same, the performance is within 5% of each other, power consumption within 20% of each other, but the 4GB model is as rare as an honest politician.

i’d have to see if RX470 is worth it later. if it can offer at least the same performance, for the same price, it’s almost a no brainer to change, just because the power draw.

The price/performance only seems to apply for North America, sadly.

They’re prohibitively expensive in New Zealand as well, equivalent of $329 USD before tax.

It’s been a long time since I had Gail memory, I haven’t even installed it for any clients for many years. I think it was 2002 or 2004 when I had it in my computer. It’s been a while.

Your stuff looks great, I hope it serves you well!

so far. it hasn’t.
it won’t even get to POST.
i spend the last 4-5 hours trying to figure out.

i found someone with similiar type of motherboard with exactly same issues.

i’m still looking for help;

This may seem daft but I’ve had this before where someone (not guilty) had put the board power connector in backwards. The round and square pins were just similar enough for it to fit without forcing it. It did exactly this and how it never fried anything I’ll never know.

Also, 2500K - correct choice of CPU sir, still hammering mine a few years after I got it.

i wanna scream false hope. FALSE HOPEEEEEEE

it’s the next day and i still can’t figure it out.

yeah, 2500k is still the best value i can get for today.
that is… if i can get it working.
plus, no 3rd party HSF. that’s coming soon, so no OCing until then. it’s running that the stock 3.3

Did you check if the cpu power connector is loose? I had this issue once.

another update.
finally got a chance to put it on my cousin’s pc. well, AND WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WILL BLOW MY MIND…

no seriously, the processor is busted. i bit the dog’s ass while grabbing the gold under.
after 2 days of fight, i just felt so fucking dissapointed and defeated. barely any anger for the seller though.

suddenly, my value pc just got a lot more pricey. will have to find another 2500k tomorrow

Sadly you live pretty much on the other end of the world; I got a 2600 (non k) lying around and can’t find anyone to buy it.

after this bullshit, i kinda want that now…

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

another update.
(boy i’m posting a lot more lately. well i am on a long vacation with nothing to do :stuck_out_tongue: )

good news

  • i managed to found a working (finally!) 2500k.
  • the computer booted up to bios, no prob with the mobo or anything else.

bad news

  • the seller of the ‘new’ 2500k only wants to sell it as a package with the mobo, one that isn’t really suited to it. so now i have an extra motherboard i’d possibly never use and have to sell again to get some of my money back (gigabyte B75M-HD3)
  • after 4 days of trying to reach the original seller, he suddenly responded. once. that fucker, giving false hope.

#FINALLY!

it’s only 90% finished though.
my original budget was cut suddenly, and i had to finish this part below the budget i planned for…
i’m still waiting to get a GPU.
anyway

installing windows 10 (yay for free windows copy. it’s legitimate, not pirated)

i’m still cleaning up the desk though

for my first time doing cable management with a case that actually have cable management space. i’d say this is not that bad.
(especially when the price of the case is around $25)

this is the closed and ‘finished’ case

I would say your cable management is very good - very clean. I’ve seen some monstrosities in my time :open_mouth:

I’m terrible with cable management. My power supply isn’t modular so all the cables are just jumbled up in the bottom of my case. Luckily my case doesn’t have a window so I can ignore it

Looks really clean - I also like that blue/white/black color-scheme. Make sure you find a graphics card that fits. And maybe take the sticker off the ssd, but thats a matter of opinion.

@maffc @FrankNSTein thanks.
the only gpu that fits the solor scheme is either from msi, the blue one, or HIS. will have to see the price for it first.

@phale. and you think mine is modular? NOPE. i’m just lucky the the bottom part is wholly covered :stuck_out_tongue:
you know, the part beside the PSU? it’s space for BOTH extra drives and tucking in extra cables.

Good cable management in my opinion. Granted, mine should hardly count given that the inside of my desktop looks a bit of a mess. Nothing like finding things you needed to plug in after you’d already put the system together.

I keep telling myself that one of these days, I’ll go back through the case and properly route some cables so that I don’t have that one dangling across the GPU, and to get that SATA cable away from the all-in-one liquid cooler. And to eventually get rid of that damned IDE drive. That thing’s been through so many computers I’ve honestly lost count.

Still, 2500k is a decent CPU. Surprised you had a dead one, but then again, a used ‘k’ chip is always a risk. Someone probably OC’d the bloody living hell out of it, let the smoke out, and figured they’d make it someone else’s problem. While I do run overclocked, I do so knowing my system’s limits, keeping an eye on my temps, and having an emergency plan in the event of high temperatures. (first thing I always try is enforcing Power Saver mode in Windows 7, instead of High Performance. If that doesn’t work, then it’s time to stop what I’m doing and go into the BIOS and slow things down a bit.)

All in all, it’s a decent little system you’ve got.
