Project A279: The HEMI That Never Was

Here’s the story of an engine that was slated to be a major game changer in the automotive industry, but ended up being canceled to an equally “changing” world…

Behold…Chrysler’s Ball-Stud HEMI Engine.


Basically it was a reconfigured B-Series short block that was to be adapted with radically redesigned HEMI heads, which would feature the so-called ball-stud rocker arm setup and heavily revised valve arrangements. Unfortunately, a year’s worth of development was stopped due to major financial “concerns”, stricter emissions regulations, scarce exposure and “dwindling” interest in muscle cars.
