Realism guidelines

A little bit of help for people not that intimate with the knowledge of early 1950’s European cars. This is information about real cars of the period but not hard rules, just more pointers on what cars were like.

  • Mostly rwd at this point, fwd isn’t out of the question but I think the majority of cars would have been longitudinal still even if fwd. Rear engine is definitely on the table and was a popular choice.
  • Automatic gearboxes would have been exceptionally rare. 3 or 4 speed manual would have been the go to gearbox type.
  • small capacity (800-1500cc) four cylinder engines. Pretty basic and low power
  • The smaller end of the cars were drunk brakes all round, discs at the front were seen on larger cars and some exotic outliers.
  • The wheels were very small and the tyres very thin, grip seemingly hadn’t been invented yet.

It looks like the wheel bases of the inspirations range from about 2.2 to 2.7 meters, which seems quite broad. Any maximum/minimum wheelbase rules or recommendations?

In fact, any form of independent rear suspension could be treated as an extra-cost option - a semi-trailing arm rear end would, for example, add $400 to the price, give or take $50.

Or McPherson when it comes to RR cars?

That could also be an extra-cost option, but if it were, it would come in at an identical or slightly lower price. Otherwise, it won’t, considering that a live rear axle may not be the most realistic option for a rear-engined platform.

I thought McPherson and double wishbone are the only options for rear engined. Wouldn’t seem fair to penalise the rear engine choice any more since it’s already at a disadvantage

any rules on performance? like some effortlessly achievable top speed or acceleration, just so no one makes a literal snail needing a runway to reach 60

I would look at the inspirations, these cars are quite literally snails. Probably taking between 40-70 horsepower.

When I get home in a couple of hours I’ll update the rules and answer some of the other questions.

good god 30+ seconds 0-60?? im sorry and i take it back, dont make rules on performance :))

i’ve added a 2.1m to 2.5m wheelbase limit to the rules now. some of the inspirations are around 2.6m but they are a bit on the large side for what was usual.

Added a $400 penalty to semi trailing arm.

That car was the 1200, Practical, Cheap both to purchase and manufacture and most importantly for 1950s Britain, It was Home-Grown, designed and built in Blighty, and you’d still have a few bob left when you drove it off the forecourt.

Burgwart Fortschritt 905

The Burgwart F900 is now successful as GDRs basic transportation for a decade, and to meet the demand of hard-working families, we are now able to deliver the Fortschritt 905, meaning it has 5 seats instead of 2+2. The engine is the M901W (Weiterentwicklung), now offering four horsepower more by being upsized to one liter.

Spacious interior, and despite being a design from 1938, the various updates have kept it modern. Over the 900, the 905 also offers an one-piece windscreen and front and rear electric indicators - improvements that will find their way into the standard 900 two-door soon.

Burgwart - Fortschritt immer, Stillstand nimmer.
