QFC 73 - Italian Job (DONE, Finals Out)

Previous Round

QFC 73 - Italian Job

Turin, Italy - May 1987

Matteo and Sofia Giordano are a newly married couple, who are looking for a new car to go with their new life - specifically, an estate with space for them, their friends, and their Italian Greyhound Giuseppe.

Rules

  • I will be accepting entries made in Al-Rilma/the current stable version of the game only.

  • Trim/Variant Year - 1987.

  • $22,000 autobucks maximum.

  • 5-door wagons only.

  • Wheelbase between 2.6m and 2.8m, standard rounding rules (+/- 0.05m) apply.

  • At least 5 full seats required.

  • At least standard 80s safety minimum, and ABS required.

  • Radial tires are required, and must end in 5. Race tires (including semi-slicks) are not allowed. +4 tire quality maximum.

  • Any amount of positive downforce on the graph in the aerodynamics page is not allowed.

  • Superchargers will incur a $300 penalty on service costs.

  • A 3-way catalytic converter (either kind) and at least one muffler is required.

  • 95 RON/91 AKI unleaded fuel maximum. You may use a lower grade fuel, though it offers no benefit.

  • No V16s, no race parts.

  • Faux diesels are not allowed.

  • Your car must achieve WES 8.

  • To simulate the 38% tax that Italy had on cars with engines above 2000cc in this era, any entries with an engine over 2000cc will be subject to a $1,500 penalty on top of the purchase price - i.e, if your entry costs $18,000 and has a 2500cc engine, the final price will become $19,500.

  • Interiors are not required, and will not be judged.

  • Advanced trim settings are allowed- however, you are not allowed to make the car look like something that it isn’t using them.

  • Legacy car bodies (it should say “Legacy Car Bodies” in the mod name) are not allowed.

  • All results are final, and I reserve the right to not accept or judge an entry I deem to be off-brief or inappropriate for the challenge.

Techpool

All entrants are allowed 40M in total techpool budget. This is the sum of the total car and engine techpool values, as shown in the above screenshot.

If you’ve had trouble with techpool exporting incorrectly in the past, you may include a screenshot of your techpool values in the same DM as your submission- I will then compare the in-game numbers to the numbers listed in the screenshot, and will edit them if necessary. However, if you do not send a screenshot of your techpool values and they end up incorrect- or if the values in your included screenshot are also wrong, you will be binned. Also, because it’s happened before - do not use my example as your techpool settings, it is merely an example and may not be fully optimized for your entry’s needs.

Negative techpool is not allowed.

Priorities

:star: :star: :star: :star:

Design

With Sofia being an interior designer and Matteo a chef in one of Turin’s top restaurants, both are no strangers to the world of design - and understand its importance. Thus, a car that’s well designed and executed is important.

Realism

OOC- I’m looking for a car that could feasibly exist and that meets basic road legality (think third brake lights, functional front and rear lighting, etc). Some cheesefest entry with a little tiny engine that’s designed to focus only on one or two key stats at the expense of all the others will not be considered, and will be binned.

Practicality

Matteo and Sofia are choosing a wagon to fit their busy lifestyle and to help support all of the things they need to do, and get to the places they need to be - thus, a car with a sizable rear cargo area is important.

OOC - I will be judging more than just the raw stat here, I’ll also be taking into account passenger and cargo figures and the physical size of the vehicle.

:star: :star: :star:

Drivability

Both Matteo and Sofia know how to drive stick and automatic, so they have no major preference there - but they want a car that won’t fight them to get from point A to point B.

Reliability

As this will be their only vehicle, Matteo and Sofia don’t want a car that will be in and out of the shop every day.

Fuel Economy

Fuel is expensive, and while neither Sofia or Matteo have particularly long commutes - a car that drinks fuel by the gallon isn’t desired either.

:star: :star:

Safety

Both Matteo and Sofia want a car that can protect them and all of their belongings, and should they have kids, a car that’s safe is important to them

Value/Purchase Price

Matteo and Sofia don’t mind spending all of their budget, but if there’s a cheaper car that does all of the same things that a more expensive car does - they’re likely to go with the cheaper one.

Comfort

Matteo and Sofia know they aren’t getting a luxury car in their budget, but they still want a car that’s comfortable enough to spend time in.

:star:

Prestige

Matteo and Sofia don’t need something fancy, but they don’t want something too basic either.

Service Costs

Matteo and Sofia know and understand that luxury vehicles are more expensive to service than their conventional brethren, but they don’t want a car that costs as much as some supercars do for basic servicing either.

I get why sportiness isn’t being judged - our client doesn’t need something with stellar performance for its class - but anything that’s too slow or doesn’t handle well enough (excessive over/understeer) won’t be on their radar either.

Also, with advanced automatic transmissions becoming more commonplace by 1987, would it make sense to treat them as extra-cost options (which would increase the cost of any car so equipped)? As for multilink suspension, I think that, as a more newfangled part, it should either be prohibited for use or treated as an extra-cost option as advanced automatic transmissions could be.

Just to make sure, engines with exactly 2000cc will not be subject to the penalty tax, right?

correct, you’re only penalized if you’re over 2000cc

How about free weight redistribution to fix this nonsense?

as I’m not allowing other body styles that would have a weight distribution advantage, I think that’s unnecessary for the purposes of this challenge.

Presenting the all new for 1987 Argon TULSA GX and GX-T both for under 22K. both go 0-100, and both are in AWD!

Turbo model has 41%* more power with 10% less displacement!

Come by your local Argon dealership or if you’re still not sure watch as we take on the GRC for the first time!

(NA model is the one for the challenge)

TULSA GX anything to drive
TULSA GX-T anything but boring

OOC - After seeing the other entries I fear I may have made my TULSA look a little too new, looks like a face lifted early 90’s wagon rather than a late 80s wagon**

My best guess for the base body set of the Avezia Nysse Attivita is the '85 Juliet (not the 2.54m wheelbase version, which is 1cm too short in terms of wheelbase to be eligible for use, but the larger 2.68m wheelbase one) - but regardless of your actual body set choice, you made it look even more expensive than it actually is.

Thanks! I don’t even know the name of the body lol, but I guess you’re right. It looks quite small both in pictures and in game for some reason.
