Very nice reviews for a QFC.
i got binmaxxed is it over for me? need to deletemaxx
Well, it’s sort of a “generic 10s japanese four pot CVT pretend-sporty sedan” so pretty mainstream at the time (longitudinal aside), but rather niche nowadays, yeah.
In retrospect the CVT was a miss but thanks for a good review anyway.
Yeah I guess I was referring to current times but yeah, great car overall. Missed the brief by only so much
Thanks for exploring CVTs anyhow, challenge participants so far seem VERY leery of them
I’d gone for a CVT early on since they fit the car, but later found Automatics had better stats and felt closer to the brief. Though now looking back at it, the difference in stats isn’t as big as I remember.
The Forgotten Yangwoo Quack
@GetWrekt01 Forgot to include one of the hatchback in the previous bin round, this will be done by me and ill give me opinions about this hatchaback and why it isnt going into the final bin round.
Yangwoo Quack - 2.0 Comfort+ @Hilbert
The Good:
-
A very comfortable ride it definitely is a plush hatchback for the cheap cost
-
Very cheap to maintain with the overall service cost being on the lower side with the overall competition
-
Fuel economy is one of its strongest with an amazing 7.2L/100km this is mainly due to the lackluster engine, ill get to it later about that
-
Overall cheap car being at a base MSRP of $16300
The Bad:
-
With the advantage it had with fuel economy it lacks in the fun department being one of the more lethargic and lackluster experiences with the engine being rather lacking in any power this can be seen with its performance of a 0-100 of 9 seconds…
-
This car is overall beaten by the Mara Xenia 1.6 SRS in terms of value for performance but overall it was a shame this had protentional of being a sleeper hatchback if you had bumped the power and remembered that we kinda wanted a sporty yet practical car, although I approve of your effort for entering with an decent car.
Decent build and is what I expected the challenge to be, being this vauge and up for interpretations this car definitely added another perspective to the challenge being on the more restrained and practical application of what we wanted.
QFC38 The Wide Assortment of Cars
The finalist are here, and the competition is tough alot of these cars have polarizing stats from each other. This will be a tough choice for the two young Uni students and their choices are far and wide to choose from, do they go for the more lavish expensive options that are rather expensive to run or go to the cheaper option? That is dependent on two factors, one side wants to use up the budget to get the best car for what the budget can provide and the other is on the stingier side although can be convinced otherwise if the design and overall style a car has.
Archer Mistral 3.6 Premium w/ Performance Package (AUDM Spec) @vero94773
Price: $26900
The Good:
-
The fun factor is definitely strong on this build being an impressive muscle cars from the states it has a mated manual transmission, although a disadvantage in drivability it makes up in the 2nd highest sportiness, this we will get to later
-
Strong engine contributes to the fast acceleration which both will enjoy being one of the highest in 0-100 bracket
-
Reliable car with most of the finalist contenders they beat out a lot of the former competition in terms of their reliability in both the car and engine being in the top but not the highest.
-
Its however one of the safest options being in the top 3 despite being a sporty car
-
Low service cost due to the increase size of the engine bay sacrificing interior space being on the 3rd lowest in terms of servicing a decent deal but runs 95 RON
The Bad:
-
Comfort is one of the lowest in the overall finalist competition being on the lower side due to standard interior and infotainment
-
Drivability is low due to the manual but not the worst it is still serviceable
-
On the smaller side on the inside due to its coupe nature and low cargo volume for its size
-
Overall actual cornering performance is rather lacking at 0.85gs with some of the other competition being on par or better which is concerning due to it going for a more sportier option
The car is a good contender with the overall design being one of the favorites of the competition for the two students, its an enthusiast car being more lenient on sacrificing comfort and the overall simplicity of driving for a hands on experience.
Teyami Sontana SEL @Tsundere-kun @vouge
Price: $26900
The Good:
-
A premium car that does exactly as its designs conveys, comfort and ease of mind, this being the most plush and comfortable ride the budget can afford its definitely a contender sheerly due to its immense comfort in comparison to the competition
-
Not only that it is also one of the biggest in terms of passenger interior size and overall cargo both practical for the daily needs of the two students no matter what they want to do, moving, road trips etc this thing will provide the most pleasant experience out of the finalist
-
It is also decent in fuel efficiency, being on the lower end despite being one of the heavier cars
-
Cheap service cost despite being fitted with premium interior in comparison to the Archer Mistral with only a slight difference of $100 in SVC and also runs 91 RON!
The Bad:
-
It has one of the worst sportiness in the finalist being more or less a nice commuter car in juxtapotion with the Archer
-
Not the highest drivability but that doesn’t mean it isn’t competitive
But not to fret the amazing styling and design backed up by its conveyed experience of luxury, promises it to be on the contend list for the two students to fork up money for. Its practical option that doesn’t disappoint.
Jefferson 400S @the-chowi
Price: $26700
The Good:
-
A comfortable ride although not as great as the Teyami Sontana SEL having luxury interior it is rather interesting that it was beaten by the Teyami although it is nothing to scoff at being more on the luxury material then the infotainment only having a standard infotainment that is very barebone but realistic for an American company of the time
-
Decent sportiness for how heavy it is due to the powerfully 5.8L V8 it handles well for its size in comparison to the Teyami
The Bad:
-
Although it is a decent car for what it provides, it lacks in reliability being the lowest out of the finalist of 76 in comparison to the average of 87 of the finalist
-
Its high service cost is what you expect from a lower end luxury car and its something to keep in mind, its also the highest out of the finalist of $1488
-
Lackluster drivability, surprisingly despite having an advance 8spd Adv Auto its only 3 points higher then the Archer
An interesting take of a lower end luxury car that integrates the fun into the luxury sector, with the high torque and V8 factor it provide a more sportier take on the premium entries. But being held back from its reliability and high service cost
Arlington Antares 4.0i QS @Texaslav
Price: $26600
The Good:
-
Rear wheel drive that doesn’t disappoint, having a respectable drivability score that is almost on par with the Teyami it also doesn’t shy away from its other aspects
-
Sportiness despite being a more premium oriented car, it doesn’t hold back any punches in regards to its performance beating the Archer at its own game, mainly due to the difference in tire compounds
-
Service cost is also low but not as impressive if you consider that it only has standard interior but offset due to its use of sports compound, it is low for what it provides. It also has enough to run lower than 91 RON
The Bad:
- Respectable comfort for what is. It has standard interior and infotainment whilst not the highest out of the rest but middle in the pact for other aspects it provides.
Overall the unique nature of the pushrod in 2014 it provides an overall modern experience for its price in both sporty application and ease of driving, it gives a good middle ground out of the rest of the finalist contenders.
Zephorus GO @Riley
Price: $27000
The Good:
-
Incredibly high drivability for what you expect for a hatchback being the best although not the highest out of the contenders
-
The best fuel economy with 5.6L/100km with an advance 1.6L I3 turbo
-
Very peppy and maneuverable for what it gives with smaller 195mm wheels it can keep up in the corners with the Archer despite being more oriented on ease of driving
The Bad:
-
The cost for what it gives it lakes in many regards to comfort and overall sporty feel that other cars can offer
-
Its service cost is high mainly due to the unique I3 Turbo in a smaller frame
-
It also has lacking seats at the rear being smaller seats and despite having premium interior and a premium HUD it provides a lacking comfortable experience
A unique take for this QFC it provides a unique fun hatchback being fuel efficient and daring with the unique I3 turbo, it has decent power for a light frame but still held back by its reduced comfort and dull feel despite being maneuverable.
Mara Xenia 1.6 SRS @AndiD
Price: $18300
The Good:
-
Low cost for high returns it provides a decent middle ground for a cheaper option in the final contender.
-
High drivability as expected for FWD and a lightweight chassis of 1.1 tons it is no suprise that this thing is easy for anyone to drive
-
Highest reliability it uses older suspension geometry and standard pieces that contributes to its high reliability this thing will last for a long time
-
Fuel economy is also one of the highest at 6.5L/100km and service cost being the lowest at $845
The Bad:
-
Sportiness being on the lower side of things, it is only saved by the use of sports compound and overall and lacking car with an underpowered 1.6L I4 making abysmal power for what the two expected, sure it can corner but speed? That’s non-existent being the slowest in acceleration and lethargic overall
-
Having low comfort is expected for the budget option but with it only being slightly better then the Archer which is an overall more balanced car then the Xenia 1.6 SRS
-
Odd design, it has one of the most awkward designs in the finalist having a coupe style body but with a long A pillar that makes it have an odd proportions not to mention looking dated by 7 years
An odd ball out of the rest only made up for the fact it is cheap to run and buy and easy to drive but is this really the practical sporty car the two would want?
Régal Lion 2300 Sport @karhgath
Price: $23300
The Good:
-
The highest drivability out of the finalist, it embodies the easy nature of a hatchback encapsulated into a unique hot hatch approach
-
Service cost is on the lower side of $999 and fuel economy at a respectable 7.8L/100km in the hatchback contenders
-
Decent sportiness for such a small and light hatchback with a middle of the time sportiness out of the finalist it provides an unique AWD system that most entries don’t have with a healthy engine with what we would expect with a crazy 0-100 of 6.5 seconds
-
Alright comfort being on the lower to middle side of the contenders beating contenders with a basic infotainment system although with a fancy sporty interior with bucket seats and the likes you would see on a hot hatch
The Bad:
- Mediocre stats in comparison to its sedan competition but doesn’t mean it isn’t bad just for the price being paid it tries to balance out through the sacrifice of other aspects for incredible driving experience
This car does almost everything right from what we expect from a hot hatch although it isn’t particularly the best in some sectors from the sedan market it provides the best experience for the driver balancing both drive and sportiness with a reduced price in comparison to the sedan contenders.
Closing Words
The finalist proved to be a tough bunch all of which provided aspects that beat the previous rounds holding unique approaches to such an open brief, through my judging with some influence from @GetWrekt01 I tried my best to find some values that fit our priority list of course through some discussion like two students would do in order to finance a car. Be reminded that all those are subjected to discussion and are not an absolute when it comes to judging as we are pretty flexible.
Congrats to...
Winners Of The Broke Student Financing an Expensive Car goes to
- @vouge & @Tsundere-kun Teyami Sontana SEL
- @Texaslav Arlington Antares 4.0i QS
- @karhgath Régal Lion 2300 Sport
- @vero94773 Archer Mistral 3.6 Premium w/ Performance Package (AUDM Spec)
- @Riley Zephorus GO
- @the-chowi Jefferson 400S
- @AndiD Mara Xenia 1.6 SRS
Final take aways with our choices, the reason as to why we decided to get the Teyami Sontana instead of the Arlington or the Régal was mainly due to its impressive drive and comfort as well as fuel economy that promises as a great base for any future that Cockman would want such as a stage 1 tune to the engine and the equipping of Sports compounds that would 100% make this car just as sporty that he wants. As the Camryman himself I enjoy its impressive approach to comfort and design as both of us approve of.
Other entries we decided to bump up higher was the Archer this was mainly due to the fact that the Automation devs decided to make manuals nerf any builds in terms of drivability and comfort so we decided that if we ignored the fact it will actually be a competitive build with its low SVC and reliability in comparison to the Chowi which had significantly lower and only marginally better drive despite having an 8spd Adv auto.
Zephorus GO could of been higher if the sportiness factor matched up with it’s handling it could of been up for grabs for the best hot hatch entry but the Régal takes what the Zephorus GO does but better overall.
And with the Xenia 1.6 SRS, its overall seemed like a decent entry until further inspection its slow, sluggish and only made up due to the use of sports compound and being light, any other car would probably achieves its performance with some easy tire switch. As for the cost, it wasn’t high on our priority so the two would decidedly get the most premium option instead if they are spending this much anyways.
Why isn’t the Rosewell Bearcat (created by @SayokiN) here? I suspect it wasn’t actually submitted to the hosts, even though an ad was posted, so it didn’t count. At any rate, congratulations to @vouge and @Tsundere-kun for winning!
There was no entry and also the body could not have another row of seats
Thanks for clarifying. It seems its creator mistakenly chose a body with only one row of seats for their entry, then chickened out upon realizing their mistake, but had no time to submit a compliant replacement.
And I didn’t expect a boggo FWD (or transverse AWD) Altima clone to claim top honors in a field filled with muscle cars and hot hatches! All head with a dash of heart - that’s the Sontana in a nutshell, and it still leaves some headroom for mild upgrades.
Thanks for the Camry and the Cock for tbe amazing round! It was certainly competitive and exciting. We’ll be unable to host so we’re passing it down to @Texaslav.
Grats to the winning car! The 4k less financing play did not pan out, but still quite surprised with a 3rd place finish, losing to two much larger cars! Grats to our gracious hosts for this very nicely written round.
Unfortunately I am not in a good place to host right now, but I had a great round idea Next time it is.
@vero94773 is next in line.
congrats to the winners! overall a fun round, thanks to comet and wrekt for hosting!
as for me hosting, i don’t really have any good ideas nor do i particularly feel like taking on hosting right now, so i’m gonna pass to @Riley
Oh me? Sure it’s qfc I’ll come up with something
