QFC42 - Retirement plan [Final Results Posted]

Here comes the bins…

With a new round comes more bins. Unfortunately, two entries did not make the cut.

IP Taiga 4x4 Dual cab

@Knugcab

image

Reasons: So close, but it only qualified as WES 10 and not 11. A very nice and competitive entry otherwise.

Yinzer Command CVLN

@NoahC

Reasons: First, the engine Tech Pool was all set to 0 - not a bin, but it would have been hard to compete. The real reasons are the 230mm wide tyres and it only qualified for WES 9. It was a unique design among entrants.

Now on to the reviews…

Maybe it had something to do with me changing engine family year to the more lore correct one, without double checking WES. Oh well.

Most likely yes, setting engine family year to 2005 instead of 2002 made it pass

@ldub0775 To whomever took those photos, there’s a very fancy plaque on a very high office of my Ad & Marketing department ready to have your name on it. Name your price.

These cars are nearly all neck and neck, not a lot differentiates them. All good options with many compromises. Unfortunately none are the best options for Peter, but might be for others.

Never thought that the Buchanka would make it in the Top Ten. I count that as an archivement.

Hearse :sob:

ADVENTURE
Audax Mojave

Style. Practicality. Efficiency.

Audax has long been comitted to durable, reliable vehicles. Ever since our founding in 1935, starting as a humble engine manufacturing company, to our first road cars boldly going against titans in the market, and now standing alone atop the pack, we can proudly say we've delivered on that promise. And we continue to do just that with the revered Mojave line of pickups. Durable steel, utilizing our revolutionary partial-unibody chassis to give you the strength of a modern automobile with the practicality of a traditional
body-on-frame truck.
A Mojave can pull its own weight — and then some.
Mojave remains one of the strongest new trucks you can buy. Offered in single and crew cab configurations, as well as a practical 3-door hauler, a sporty 3-door turbocharged SUV, and a more family-oriented fullsize SUV, there's a Mojave for anyone in need of a truly durable and rugged truck.
More rugged than ever for the Canadian market.
Our line of Canadian-market specific Mojave trucks is optimized to give you the confidence to brave the unknown as far north as you can imagine. Despite its desert-inspired name, any Mojave is just as at home in Death Valley as it is the tundras of the far north. And if our reputation for reliability and our commitment to the best service we can offer isn't enough, or seeing even our oldest models still driving with ease today, we're not quite sure what could convince you.
Our apologies.
Visit or contact your local Audax dealership to find the Mojave
or other Audax model that's right for you.

These are the most likely to please Peter, not all are perfect (see post-mortem below) but the 5 contenders are really anybody’s game…

Winner

… while most of the previous entries were close, very close, the winner was ahead of the pack by a lot (as much as the difference between 13th and 2nd in scoring). Actually, the winner would still have won if it would have been designed by BetterDeals… but thank god it was not and ended up the best looking entry of the class!

Without further ado, the winner is...

1 - @iivansmith / @Oreology

Congrats!

Post-Mortem

Thanks to all entrants, that was fun to judge. As a QFC, which was a very simple ranking, no realism bins, just dinged on one priority. This allows everyone to send in something.

First and foremost I really expect SUV and offroad to fare a bit better… but they also did not compromise for Heavy Duty and stayed true to themselves, which was not great here. A dedicated trim would have fare much better.

I think raising the budget was a mistake, as I thought it would be. It allowed to easily pick the Env Res meta (Alu + CR steel). Also moving Load Capacity to top priority (to curtail more/better luxury SUV a bit) was maybe a bit much. Still, overall the stats balance worked individually, but yeah, overall a lot more priorities related to trucks than others, so they fare much better here. Still think a properly ruggedized Cayenne could have been a contender.

The biggest thing was towing - 2 of the top 5 entries had anemic engines that would not tow much. They were dinged in cohesiveness a lot, but overall there was not actually any rule that pushed for being a good tower. I actually had some basic rules (wheelbase, weight, torque, etc.) but did not post them explicitly so since this is QFC I decided to not apply them.

Feel free to comment here or on discord, always happy for feedback!

Fun Facts
  • There was a lot of VVL in this round. Not surprising because it can be found in many modern engines, but was not a necessity here. The biggest issue is that it is costly, and many people misused it or did not properly took advantage of it.
  • Safety was not a main advantage of the top cars, most very safe cars were at the bottom, weirdly.
  • Load Cap was there to balance Comfort and did work. Not all top contenders were high there, but they were comfortable otherwise.
  • Same for Cargo, it was there to balance Practicality, so a good balance of practical or cargo space in the top cars. Not entirely sure why the Centurion has the such a low (19) practicality here tho, but was near the top for Cargo as expected.
  • 2 cars had more than 5 seats and 3 had less than 5.
  • All the sportiest (top was 20) cars were ranked very low overall… except for the Armor with a surprising 16 sport!
  • Top 6 were mostly ladder or partial monocoque - 1x Monocoque, 2x Partial Mono, 3x Ladder. Probably explains the low overall safety of the top cars. The Piedmont was a Semi-Space Frame truck… a first!
  • Probably my first challenge where Double Wishbone is not the meta for rear suspension. 8x Multilink, 6x Coil Live axle, 4x Leaf Springs, 1x DW, 1x Semi-Trailing Arm. That last one did not perform well unfortunately, but the DW was in the top 5!
  • I misspelled “Ruggedized” many times, sorry about that!
