Design a reliable and economical car that can be afforded by most of the population.
Jakarta and its 4 satellite cities are a masterclass in how to do everything wrong in urban design. It is the second most populated urban area in the world, with 35.6 million people. This density, combined with a lack of reliable and accessible public transportation networks and a continued focus on building more highways and American-style suburbs has lead to most Indonesians suffering under daily 2 hour traffic jams and breathing toxic fumes in their homes (that are next to highways). With no other option of getting around the places they need to go, car (or motorcycle) ownership is necessary. In a country where the cheapest of cars are considered a luxury to some, even the bare minimum that provides a climate-controlled cabin to protect them from urban heat and pollution, a roof to protect them from the rain, 5 seats to carry their friends or family, and 4 wheels to take them cross-country would be enough.

You are a car manufacturer looking to take advantage of this market need.

Design

With such a big financial decision, you definitely want a car that at least looks cool for your friends and neighbors to wow at. The preference are sporty looking cars or cute/chic.

(Doesn’t mean that the car needs to have amazing style, just make sure it’s well-built in game)

Drivability

The car needs to be extremely easy to drive. You are sitting in traffic for at least 2 hours everyday for the rest of your life and occasionally need to visit your cousins/friends/family across the country in 6+ hour long drives.

Purchase & Service Costs

You are doing okay - for someone from Indonesia, lol. Unfortunately your purchasing power is still one of the lowest in the world, and you really don’t want to spend more than you need.

Fuel Economy

Even with government subsidies, fuel is still prohibitively expensive. It also literally burns off as you sit for hours in traffic, so the more fuel efficient the car the better.

Reliability

You do NOT want to reach into your wallet to fix something or replace anything. Ever. That’s so expensive!

Practicality

You can really only afford one car. What if you need to take your friends to the trendy new cafe? What about a weekend getaway trip? What about delivering cakes to customers for your Instagram cake business?

Comfort

Statistically, the average Jakartan literally spends 10 years of their life sitting in traffic lmao. Please make it comfortable.

Safety

Neither you or the government cares. Most of the time you will only go 40km/h anyways so it’s just a minor collision. If a random truck suddenly hits you from behind because its brakes failed due to lack of government oversight and regulation, well at least you will get to heaven quicker.

Prestige

Ehhh at this price point you’re really not flexing anything to folks who already have a car.

Sportiness

You will be stuck in traffic or carefully weaving through a sea of motorcycles, so unfortunately there is no road left for you to exercise that 74hp engine!!!

We are designing and making a car for the 2024 year, but we will use Automation’s 2020 year.

  • Engine & Variant Year: 2020
  • Max Wheelbase: 2.6m or below. (110 in)
  • Body Styles: Hatchbacks highly preferred. MPVs or subcompact crossovers acceptable.
  • Fuel Type: 91 RON.
  • 0-100kph Acceleration: Faster than 14 seconds.
  • Safety: Basic 10s or Above.
  • Seats: At least 5 full-sized seats.
  • Doors: At least 4 doors.
  • Tyres: Radials ending in 5. (No semi-slicks)
  • Emissions: WES10
  • Max Loudness: 50
  • Max Budget: $10,000
  • Minimum Quality: -5
  • Techpool: $40M, Combined
  • No Negative Techpool

(The default techpool of +5 everywhere gives a combined $26.36M. An additional $18.64M should be plenty enough to bring down costs and allow you to specialize in a particular area.)

Changelog & Notes

Please remember to double check car and naming schemes, as well as the rules including the acceleration one. Also, usually cars in this segment have tiny engines and only really need 60 or 100hp so no need to go overboard lol but it’s up to you.

Please also do NOT bother with interiors, this is a QFC.

On the other hand, you wouldn’t want to end up with something that’s too slow to keep up with traffic.

I’m not sure if a sedan/wagon body style should also be acceptable, but greater local taxation on those types of cars would rule them out, unlike hatchbacks.

A minimum wheelbase limit (preferably 2.3m) would also be welcome, to avoid ending up with something that’s too small.

One more thing: I’m expecting interiors to be completely optional, and hence won’t be judged if fitted.

Negative quality is a good idea for this segment, but it would be wise to add “minimum 0 quality” to the safety rule so we dont get actual deathtraps

Damn, it’s just criminal that we don’t get some market-adapted version of the Fiat Argo here in Europe.

Aaaanyway, cool idea, me likey. Somehow, between work, uni and possibly writing some article I might cram in making a car for this! Especially since I already have a pretty precise idea of what I’d like to build, and how to do it, how to style it and how to name it. Heck, I have a prototype of the earlier generation in my sandbox.

As for the negative quality, IDK, I rarely even use it personally, but I think allowing it except maybe safety or tyres would make sense given the premise, maybe with some sane limit like -3? Or without a limit, just relying on the participants’ judgement (lol, that may have funny effects).

I’d say just avoid it because people don’t really buy diesel powered shitbox outside of Europe except trucks and vans

When you say basic 2010’s safety minimum, does that mean it has to have at least 2010’s safety? Or does it have to have a better safety rating than basic 2010s? Because I’m seeing that standard and advanced 2000’s safety does better than basic 2010s in terms of safety rating. As does advanced 90’s.

I’m assuming it has to be 2010s-era safety.

It will jack the price up, but it can still be fitted without breaching the budget cap. I was able to sneak it into my test mule (which somehow doesn’t have any negative quality) while still being under budget, though, but I’m assuming it won’t be required.

My assumption is that all of these seats must be full-sized - not reduced-size +2 or +3 seats.

Alright, I think we have enough poll voters to close it. I’m not exactly sure where you’ll put negative quality at, I tested with -15 and it didn’t really help much with the cost but affected stats a lot.

I’ll allow up to -5 negative quality.

I think any more than that feels kinda weird - you’re a large manufacturer with the supply chain and factories (40M TP) to support standard budget cars lol you don’t have to cut down even more on already basic components I think.

Yes just the option, not the stat. The stat itself is affected by other things such as weight and chassis, but the safety option should be basic 2010s minimum.

Yes 5 full seats, practicality is still somewhat of a consideration.

They’ve disappeared from Europe too, I don’t think any manufacturer still offers a diesel in the A or B segments (Panda/Aygo like or Polo/208 like). Though apparently they like diesels in India, including very small ones :thinking: Or Japan I guess, since there must be a reason why Mazda offers a 2 diesel there.

Yeah, it’s a bit of offtopic curiosities at this point.

At this short of a length, hatchbacks, crossovers or MPVs are more practical and space-efficient for this intended purpose, so I will say no to sedans.
