QFC63 - City Pop Blues

Osaka, 1990

It's the new decade!

To celebrate Wataru got a big bonus from his boss at work. Seeing all the fancy “date” cars he wanted in on the action but, the only car he has is his old delivery kei truck. He wants something new and fancy that will impress the ladies and turn heads.

Priorities

Realism

Of course that goes without saying try to make it fit that era. Make it realistic and have the basic things such as lights, wipers, door handles and other bits there. I will try to check if the engineering / design makes sense for the time period. Otherwise instant bin.

Design

In the age of excess, looks are everything.

Don’t matter how much money you got if you don’t look the part. You could have millions of yen in your bank account but if you dress like you came out of the Edo period all you’re going to get is not looks of admiration but, of pity.

The same goes with cars you’re going to leave more of a mark if you drive the fanciest car you can buy instead of a kei truck. It’s the price of excess.

:star: :star: :star:

Comfort

Wataru wants to enjoy cruising down the countryside and drive without killing his back; He already got enough of that through his kei truck. Wataru would like for his spine to not be rearranged by extremely stiff suspension and nonexistent seats.

Prestige

If Wataru wants the respect of the people he needs to have a car that shows to the world that he has something more than a tin can on wheels, technology has progressed so far now and if you don't have the latest and greatest then you're practically a fossil.

Drivability

Sure, Wataru drove around Dotonbori, Kabukicho and even to the countryside but, that wouldn't make him a race car driver. Quite the contrary and if he's going to drive with these expensive wheels down Chinatown then the car needs to be predictable as well as not have snap over-steer.

:star: :star:

Safety

The kei truck Wataru has might've been dangerous if you managed to hit 80km/h in it but these new cars he wants can go well over that and it's not the speed that kills you but the sudden stop. We are at a time where deathtraps aren't sold and for good reason; return customers are hard to find if they keep dying so try not to do that.

Reliability

Wataru would like to not be stranded on the side of the road and have to call the tow truck. Sure he could use his kei truck if his new car plans to stay in the shop for 15 business days and pass the time away listening to city pop on the radio. However, he doesn't have time to do that for every single car breakdown/issue. So he'd prefer if his new car was a little more reliable. It is a personal luxury car after all.

Purchase Price

Even in the bubble era and age of excess Wataru isn't willing to spend all of his hard Yen on his new car even if it's an export. He needs to have at least some of his money for his friends and +1. If he can find a better deal for a car elsewhere he will try to do that.

:star:

Running Costs

Well even the most reliable cars out there eventually breakdown and require maintenance. However, Wataru is no stranger to this having it done for his kei truck. Sure it might be a bit more expensive to maintain a luxury sports car with it's higher fuel costs and service costs but then again he doesn't want it to break the bank sort to speak.

Performance

For Wataru anything better performing than a kei truck is impressive for him. But, it's not the main draw when he thinks of "date" cars so it doesn't rank high on his mind and the same with convertibles but if it he can't choose between competitors it might be the tiebreaker he needs.

Sportiness

Well these new cars are sportier than the old delivery truck Wataru has but they sure don't have to be on the same level as one. They should at the very least handle decently well and not careen down the mountain pass because of terrible handling.

Submissions

Since this the first time I have hosted a challenge it might take more time for me to finish all of the reviews (also I will be my first time reviewing cars and scoring them as well). I'll try to get the reviews as fast as I can but with university starting for me in a few weeks and other bits I am a bit unsure on how long it might take. Furthermore, if I get something wrong then sorry about it and I may misjudge engineering or other bits.

Anyhow if you want to send the .car file DM to me on the forum. You can resubmit your .car file until the day of the deadline, I will go with the latest .car file that is provided

Naming Conventions

I plan on trying to get all of the reviews done by the end of September if possible.

Changelog

03/09/2025: Added Changelog, made the deadline shorter, adjusted realism criteria to remove the lore aspect of the cars and only judge them based on time period, removed arbitrary loudness, added the use of advanced trim settings, added that I will not be judging interiors, added and then removed max quality on the slider +5 for car parts and engine parts and +0 for tires. Added that there can't be any negative tech pool, fixed typos. Added 300zx to inspiration list. Clarified variant year and model year.

04/09/2025: Clarified that only the front seats will only be used when scoring and added full back seats in the seats rule.

05/09/2025: Clarified the body style rules, added 2dr saloons and soft/hard top convertibles/targas are allowed now. Updated, streamlined and change the positioning of the inspiration for easier readability and have more of a focus on GT cars. Changed the order of the Toronado to be closer to the FWD GT cars instead of at the bottom.

16/09/2025: Extended the deadline to be on the 18/09/2025.

Even tough I get where your coming from, I think generally including peoples lore in judning is a bad idea, some people have IG lore, some have IRL lore and some dont give a shit about lore. So to avoid sour faces and a judging headache I would advise to ignore lore. This is a QFC after all.

Also some rules regarding negative techpool and quality would be good to avoid too much cheese

Agree on the lore part. If anything, since the array of inspirations is so wide, maybe making sense for the type of car if anything. A Reatta, Eclipse, Saab 900 and RX7 would not have been direct competitors (being cross shopped is another thing) and that reflects in both styling and engineering. It would surprise me a bit if something looking like the RX7 had a lazy V6 and front wheel drive from a Reatta when I opened the hood. More important than lore IMO.

Ah yeah I think I was too caught up on the whole technology factor instead of how they work as competitors i’ll try and adjust the inspiration list later on.

I’ve never encountered a universal quality ceiling anywhere - I’m sure this is meant to deter minmaxing.

Tbh, not needed IMO. It can always be fun to have different possible approaches and see which one that will work the best in the end.

Probably would remove the quality ceiling myself, quite restrictive for what should be a fast challenge. Why is tyre quality 0 as well? Makes sense for beam challenges but why for automation only?

I was trying to deter min maxing but I think I went too strict for it I’ll remove both the tire quality thing and the max quality and just clarify you shouldn’t have +15 everywhere.

I mean I didn’t want it all to be japanese sports/luxury coupes so I tried include some foreign cars. I tried to include lower end vehicles and high end cars there e.g., Honda with it’s 4WS, Buick with its touchscreen dash thing and Nissan with it’s electronic voice command etc. Although the list is a bit big there and is a bit muddled with Gran tourers I hope it makes sense what Wataru wants.

What does this mean? Are we allowed to have cars from 1992 despite the challange taking part during 1990?

Basically have the main model year be 1990 but the individual car models can be up to 1992 (it’s because I realized some of the body styles automation has from that time period is a bit weird done like the evade 3000GT body unlocking at 1992 even though IRL the car came out around 1990).

You unlock bodies with the body tech pool with one point adding one year to the body unlocks so you don’t need to allow the trim to up to 1992. If the round is set in 1990 it should be 1990

Oh I forgot about that I’ll update the rules.

I agree - having a trim year of 1990 at the latest (even though the model year may be older than this) makes perfect sense. But that also raises a key question: why should the family year be 1990 exactly despite the variant year also having to be set to 1990, when allowing the family year to be older than this would help accommodate some companies’ lore?

It feels kind of silly to have 2.7m wheelbase but only 2+2 seating despite there being space for 4 full seats. Is allowing 4 full seats to larger cars something that could be considered?

damn why do most of the fun challenges not allow Al Rima

It’s still in development and there are numerous odd bugs that crop up with every new patch

any chance we can make a shooting brake? IDK why but I’ve got an idea for this one.

I am a bit conflicted since irl most cars from that era have like unusable back seats. But there’s also a few that do have back seats that can be used by adults (Mazda Cosmo iirc although the wheelbase is a bit longer). I think I’ll consider having full back seats as an option.
