Repmobile '86 (EARLY ELIMINATIONS PART 2!)

THE SPRING OF 1986, SOMEWHERE IN HETVESIA

No need to get complicated with the backstory here. Our client has been climbing the corporate ladder for a while now, and has now reached the point where they want to give him a company car. As usual, forget having fun, forget Ferraris, Porsches and even the Golf GTI. It comes with some constraints, of course.

What he can choose is a C or D segment car, preferably around 1600 cc. Also, a sedan since they want the security of a separate, lockable luggage compartment. Finally, he has been given a budget and…cheating just a little bit with that is not a risk that is recommended to take now.

It is as boring as it sounds, but maybe your car company is the one having the right car for him?

RULES
  • Car trim and engine variant year should be 1986. Model and family can be older for lore purpouses.
  • The car should have a wheelbase between 240 and 260 cm, and that’s hard limits and not how the numbers are rounded by the game. So, for example, a 238 cm body that the game classes as “2.4m” is not allowed.
  • Legacy bodies allowed.
  • The body should be classed as a sedan by the game. Convertible tops not allowed.
  • Race or billet parts are not allowed.
  • Maximum engine displacement of 1625 cc (gives some leeway for a “1600”).
  • The fuel should be regular or premium unleaded
  • The engine needs to meet WES6. If you can do this without a catalytic converter, you’re free to not use one.
  • Loudness numbers should not exceed 45 (I rarely use this stat but we are not building performance cars now)
  • Tyre profile needs to be 60 or higher. Only regular radials allowed, and they should be hard long life or medium compound.
  • The car should have two full seats up front, three full seats in the back, for realism purpouses all other configurations are banned.
  • Safety has to be 80s or newer (era wise) and standard or higher (level wise).
  • Engineering realism will be encouraged. I know that there were outliers in this class and I will allow some creativity, but it’s up to you to look up what was actually used, if you don’t want to get dinged. And if it is completely bonkers, I will take the right to bin your rear engined 1600 cc V10 car with solid front axle, hydropneumatic suspension, CVT, handbuilt interior with basic AM radio piece of crap. You have been warned. Keep in mind that the choices should not only make sense by themselves, but also paired with each other.
  • ATS should be used in moderation and not to make the car look like something it is not. If you are unsure, just ask.
  • 3D/Patchwork that makes the car look like something outside the scope, or that makes something that’s not within the rules look like it is, will result in an instabin. Of course it is allowed for reshaping the body as long as it is only cosmetic.
  • Maximum purchase price $ 10 500 AMU. A CVT transmission will add $1500 to the price on top of what the game stats says.
  • Maximum techpool costs (car total cost + engine total cost added) $32M. Negative techpool not allowed.
  • No hard limits on quality, but keep it sane, not +15 interior paired with -15 safety for example, that’s something that will fall under the “engineering realism” clausule.
PRIORITIES

:star::star::star::star::star:

RELIABILITY
It is a car that needs to be trusted to do its work after all. Having it stand in the shop will cause inconvenience for both company and employee.

FUEL ECONOMY and SERVICE COSTS
Reducing costs of use for what’s basically a tool for working should be a no-brainer.

:star::star::star::star:

COMFORT
You won’t get a Bentley at this price point, but “as good as it gets” would be fine since a lot of time will be spent in the car.

DRIVEABILITY
Do I really need to tell you why a car like this should not have a horsekick turbo lag or terminal oversteer?

:star::star::star:

EXTERIOR STYLING
Not the most important, but it is after all about the image of both company and employee, so looking good is not a drawback.

PRESTIGE
The same thing applies here. Now, it is generally not a good image for a company to “waste money on luxury cars” either but since you won’t get that at the price point, as good as it gets for the money is all fine.

:star: :star:

SAFETY
That was generally not thought much about in this class in the 80s but it would be fine to not spend a lot of miles in something that would turn into a sheetmetal and meat sandwich in a fender bender.

PRACTICALITY
Game stats are a bit borked here but good enough to be taken into consideration.

WEATHER RESISTANCE
It is good if the rust at least becomes the second owners headache.

PERFORMANCE
Yes, we’re not building performance cars, but at least safe passing acceleration and 0-100 times that won’t give you a brain hemorrhage should be expected even from a 1986 blandmobile.

PURCHASE PRICE
The company has given a budget and probably has no interest in the client going for a clown car to save some bucks for them - but still could be taken into some consideration if you can build a car as good for some bucks less.

:star:

SPORTINESS, OFFROAD
Included mostly as “credits for not cheesing them away” stats.

INTERIOR DESIGN
Interior not needed, but a good one can give some bonus points, and a terrible one won’t set you back compared to none at all.

Now this looks like a job for me

If my car takes 20 sec to 0-100 should i be worried about this rule or its fine? That’s a performance similar to real world cars from my country from 1986.

Those tires should also be hard or medium radials, for realism’s sake.

And I’m assuming this was meant to be a QFC/CSR, but became a standalone challenge given that both of those have just launched a new round each.

Hetvesia is supposed to reflect the northern part of western europe more or less. 20 seconds to 100 is IMO too slow for a car in this segment there in 1986. I can’t spoon feed you (where “you” means as for the whole community, not you in person) with what is acceptable or not, but sub 10 times were still something that mostly the performance versions of cars like this had, and 20 was something you could find among naturally aspirated diesels, or extreme budget cars (none of them relevant for this challenge). So aim somewhere in between I would say.

And yes, I didn’t want to put in a ton of rules, but offroad or sports tyres would get dinged for realism, absolutely.

And no, this was just an idea I got for a challenge spontaneously from a FB post I read some days ago. There is actually a rather fun group that can inspire you to challenges called “Car confrontations”. It really reminds me of Automation challenges sometimes, haha…

So this was never intended for a QFC or CSR, but to some extent it is hard to make a challenge about making a car for a client without making it quite similar to them.

By the way, I am thinking about clarifying the seating rules to “2 full seats up front, 3 in the back” because that’s what everything would have had and 4 seaters is kind of cheesy when it comes to comfort…thoughts?

You might be right. 2 full-sized seats in the front and 3 more full-sized seats in the rear should be required for realism’s sake.

plus high mountains, so you want a car that doesn’t die climbing up on the Weisshorn pass…

1986 Globus Intruder ES

Gasmean cars are huge, thirsty and impractical? Not the Intruder. Launched in 1982, it was designed to compete in a market changed by two fuel crisis, and also to be successful in export markets. With this year´s facelift, the ES version is powered by the same 1.5 liter four-cylinder found in the Primus Advance, Hetvesias best compact hatchback.

A reasonnable trim level for a low price are rarely the reasons for excitement. The Intruder features multi-point injection, a four-speed automatic and five comfortable seats.

We broke with almost all Gasmean conventions to offer you a car that is best at what it should be in first place: A mean of transport.

GLOBUS. Buy clever, regret never.

1986 Seongu Gran Kando 1.3i LX

By then the largest offering by aspiring car maker Seongu, this is the sedan version of the Gran Kando, a stretched version of the smaller Kando, the company’s main staple.

SOME CHANGES:

Specified allowed tyre types and seating configurations.
Opened up for using premium unleaded.
Moved comfort down to a four star priority since it felt more balanced.
Added the Austin Montego to the inspirations to not ruin @mart1n2005 s day anymore.

I don’t like how you use the word ‘should’ in rules

are 4 doors required or are two-door sedans acceptable? If allowed, is the only drawback in that case a lower practicality stat?

As long as the game classes the body as a “sedan” you will be fine with 2 doors, since practicality will be counted with, I feel that they are given enough of a handicap. But try to look at 2 door sedans with no sporty ambitions from the era to get a grasp of what is wanted styling wise.

Thinking about raising the techpool to $32M to make the budget a little less tight but still giving restraint that will make it hard to squeeze in pseudo-luxury vehicles. Opinions?

Seems reasonnable. My car isnt exactly fancy but at the upper end of the budget.

I’d agree with HHH with this. It’s enough of an increase to help with the budget but not so much that it allows for a lot of cheese.

is it okay if I have 0 sportiness?? it says credit for not cheesing stats but I don’t have a manual transmission so my sportiness is realyl lowered

I think so, since its a low priority you won´t sacrifice too much, still, my car is far away from anything sporty, still scores around 5 if I remember correctly. Maybe aim for 2 or such, and you will be fine. From anything of the 80s, a zero score is quite hard to get except you are doing a truck.

Nothing is banning it in the rules, how far you will go is another thing.
