Introducing Sun Cars Glb.
The order of posting will not be chronological, as this topic is contructed like a wikipedia/website description. Also, I will not feature all models pics but only the important ones). Anyway, enjoy
(original logo, unchanged since 1979.)Sun is a car company created by Matthew Clarkson (a far cousin from Jezza) in 1979.
SCG’s founder had a very simple goal, quite similar to Porsche’s engineers; to build cars he would have wanted to drive.
M. Clarkson was not starting from scratch, in fact, his father had a steel factory in Louisiana which had been closed, but the building was still owned by him. (is that correct english?)
Matthew’s uncle gave him 30.000 dollars, in return of a major share in the company. (I shall extend the lore later).
Along with a few friends from Uni, Lewis James, Joel Barker and William Hinton, he recruited a small team of workers (Matthew’s friends were already qualified in design and research).
Their first car, launched in 1982, was the Cavalier.
A revolutionnary front grille is what caracterizes the best this car. Oh, that and a 285 hp V8.
The Cavalier was popular enough and made enough sales to allow SCG to release, in 86, a second gen Cavalier.
Same engine, same style, same glory.
This version did not know the same sucess as its predecessor, the 1rst gen was popular because of it’s grille, and the 2nd gen ditched it for a more simple and modern one.
The third gen of Cavalier cars tweaked the body a bit, while maintaining the classic allure of the range. In 1990, the body was a bit dated, and sold a lot less than other generations. Although, pop up lights were cool.
The engine had been changed for a V6 producing no less than 240 hp.
A generous fan gave us photos of a “secret” prototype, never finished, set to release in 92. Apparenty, it’s body was made in fibre glass.
Hop on to 1994.
M. Clarkson was still head of the company, and Joel Barker, it’s senior designer, wrote him a mail about an amphibious car, because, why not? It would have to be a fast coupé, streamlined, stylish, but able to cruise in the water at about 7-8 knots. Guess what, they made it.
Presenting, the Amphicar coupé 1.0 (a 2.0 was planned but never released, why oh why…)
On the second picture, behind the rear wheels, those black “things” are actually stabilizers, that extend by the press of a button.
The fourth picture shows the car’s propultion system, 4 hydrojets situated in the diffuser (the actual exhaust is the oval chromed piece in the center).
The fifth picture (pictures) the water pump air intake, in the middle, and the water exit.
Only problem was the engine. An I4 developping 108 hp. The car weighted about 900kgs, but it got nowhere near “fast”, looks nice in Cherry Red tho.
