The 40 Fixture Challenge (ONE-OFF - ENDED - RESULTS RELEASED)

The 40 Fixture Challenge

Efficiency is everything, especially when it comes to design - but what if you were even more limited? In this challenge, you will be given just 40 fixtures (with some exceptions) to make a complete design. I want to see what you can do with less, while still making something aesthetically pleasing and creative. In this challenge, you will be tasked with making a 2020 compact sedan, and with just 40 fixtures to do it, you’ll have to be creative with what fixtures you use, and how you use said fixtures.

Rules

  • Only entries made on the stable version of the game will be accepted. Any entries made on the open alpha will be binned.

  • All entries are allowed a maximum of 40 total fixtures. However, in the interest of keeping things fair, and because all cars would have these things, these fixtures will not count towards your total - Fuel Doors/Caps, Mirrors, Door Handles, Antennas, Windshield Wipers, License/Number Plates, Premade Badges from the Badging category, and Typeable Text Badging. However, I will only subtract these fixtures when used for their intended purpose. Spamming these fixtures in an attempt to use them in a way other than their intended purpose will result in a bin. DISCLAIMER - Automation’s built in fixture counter starts from 0, not 1, so please remember to add 1 to your final fixture count before subtracting any free fixtures. (ie 50 total fixtures becomes 51, and so on.)

  • In addition to the fixture rules above, mirrored fixtures only count as one fixture, as they do in game.

  • Trim/Variant Year - 2020.

  • Engineering is not being judged, this is purely a design challenge.

  • 4-door sedan and liftback bodies only. Liftback sedans listed in game as hatchbacks, and sedans listed in game as coupes are also allowed.

  • Wheelbase between 2.6 to 2.9m, standard rounding rules apply.

  • Interiors are not required, and will not be judged.

  • Advanced trim settings are allowed- however, you are not allowed to make the car look like something that it isn’t using them.

  • Legacy car bodies (it should say “Legacy Car Bodies” in the mod name) are not allowed.

Judging Criterion

All entries will be judged in 4 core areas, scored out of 20 in each area, for a maximum possible score out of 80. These areas are-

Creativity

This encompasses creative use of fixtures, creative design cues and aspects, and experimenting with how you place fixtures on a design.

Coherence

This encompasses whether or not the design makes sense, was the design approached thoughtfully and intentionally, is it proportional, etc.

Execution

This encompasses things like whether or not your ideas were well thought out and applied, is the design clean and smooth or is it messy and haphazard, was there clear attention to detail, etc.

Realism

This encompasses things like whether or not your design could feasibly exist as a real car in 2020 and in the segment of cars it was made for, are the design aspects and cues consistent with the era/segment, and if it actually looks like a car.

Changelog

  • added License/Number Plates and Premade Badges from the Badging category to the list of exempted fixtures.

  • Clarified that exempted fixtures are only to be used for their intended purpose, and that spamming or using a lot of those fixtures to do something other than their intended purpose will result in a bin.

  • Clarified that mirrored fixtures only count as one fixture.

  • Fixed a minor error in the judging criterion where I said there would be a possible maximum of 100 points, updated it with the correct value of 80.

  • Added a disclaimer that the game’s built in fixture counter starts from 0, not 1 (so for example, if your car’s final fixture on the fixture counter is 50, you would actually have 51 total fixtures.)

how about numberplates and numberplate holders, non-text badging and patches with custom textures for badging purposes?

numberplates yes, holders no because those can be manipulated into doing other things design wise (the reason I selected the exempted fixtures is because they’re hard to use for other things aesthetically)

non text badging you’d have to give an example, and patches no (even for custom textures) for the same reason as plate holders.

just badges from the badge category

tentatively I’m going to say yes then.

The VW Jetta is also a compact sedan, so it should also be listed as inspiration - not doing so seems like a glaring omission to me.

If we want to get down to it there is probably 20 small sedans from Europe and Asia not on the list but I’m sure we all understand what a compact sedan in the American naming is

@vero94773 I assume the “free” fixtures are only that if used for their intended purpose? So I couldn’t make a headlight from 20 door handles and a fuel cap for example

correct. I also chose those fixtures because it’s difficult to make them into something that they’re not, so attempts to try to use them in a way other than intended wouldn’t help people. I’ve also added a note to the brief about using those fixtures only for their intended purpose.

Interior also counts aswell right @vero94773?

yes, any fixtures that are not explicitly free to use count against the 40 fixture limit.

Big clarification question: for determining total fixture count, are you using the fixture numbers displayed in the fixture selection box on the left side of the fixture screen? Or are you going through and counting each fixture? I ask this because if how fixtures that are mirrored display. Are mirrored fixtures counted as 1 or 2 fixtures?

Also, if I were to use two wing mirror fixtures(stalk and actual mirror, for things like rotation and such), would those both still be exempted, since they’re both being used for the purpose of a wing mirror? Same thing with getting wipers to sit flat on some windshields, breaking the same wiper fixture up into stalk and wiper to rotate independently. Also for getting door handles up to the surface through body molding, sometimes two are used, one for cutting through and the other for the visible handle. Would that count as 1 or 2 fixtures, since both are being used to place the door handle?

answered this on discord - copying my answer and posting it here for posterity

i’m using both the fixture menu with the numbers and counting the exempted fixtures on the car, then subtracting those numbers to get your total fixture count sans exempted fixtures

mirrored fixtures count as one fixture, as they do in game

when it comes to using multiple exempted fixtures, things like cloning a door handle, painting one set transparent and using 3D on the other set to make it smoother wouldn’t count against your total, it’s only when you’re spamming them or using them in a way that would let you skirt around the 40 fixture rule that it becomes an issue

Are you allowed to create a challenge, i want to too.

In theory anyone can host a challenge, but they are a lot of work to do. So it’s strongly recommended you spend some time competing in others, to learn the conventions and standards of how they’re run first.

Also, some challenges are serial in nature- that is, hosting is reserved as a “prize” for whoever won the previous one.
