The Car Shopping Round (Round 64): Tears in Heaven

It is a time of strife. The oil embargo has driven up the cost of fuel, the economy is in recession, the White House is rocked with scandal. But tough times don’t mean impossible. Money may be tight, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a good car. Now is the perfect time to buy…

THE PETOSKEY VULCAN

The Vulcan is the newest entry level model by Petoskey Motors. With the Vulcan, we return to the basics. When things are tough, nothing can beat the rugged simplicity of the Vulcan.

Initially launched two years ago, the Vulcan is driven by a 151 cubic inch inline 4 mated to a three speed manual transmission. For 1974 we’ve increased the size of the rear brakes for improved stopping performance and less fade. Power steering is now a standard feature.

The engine produces a modest 62 horsepower, but you’ll find the car makes the most of it. Make the most of your dollar by purchasing a Vulcan today. Fight the fuel crisis with the Vulcans 20 mpg* combined. The Vulcan is also covered under the Petoskey 4/40 warranty. 4 years or 40,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Petoskey: Simple Budget, Exquisite Taste.

*Based on EPA estimates, your mileage may vary.

Sure, you’re after an affordable car… but that’s not ALL you want. Power, performance, economy, reliability… and a name you can trust. That’s where G&W comes in. We might be from “across the pond”, but scope this out, dude! It’s a second generation Seax. You get an AM radio, a quality interior, and a coupe you can be proud of.
152 Cubic Inches of Straight Six with 133LbFt and 117 HP. Want to impress the neighbours… umm, neighbors? (damn you, U.S. dialect) How does 60MPH in 10.1 seconds sound? You can have it all for 11250AMU (9K @ 0%).

Note: We’ve even given you a new grille grill and a special carby manifold because our MFI was too complex for you. That’s how special you are!

I misread this Seax as Sex, apart from that there are no problems imo

The Erin Civera. The perfect car for our Young Americans. A well rounded entry level GT coupe, with straight 6 smoothness and British styling.

Specifically, this being 1974, this car has just come finished its third storming season in the European GT Championship and the ETTC, and had made it’s IMSA debut the year before. It was the star car of the ErinSport team at the time.
More information here.

So basically, this is part cool 2 door coupe and part 70s racing legend. The only catch? The fuel consumption is a bit naff.

But ya know, if you can look past that ‘minor’ inconvenience…

That is among the best ads for this round, right up there with the Blue Marlin!

And I thought about submitting a competitor to the Mk1 Escort, but decided on a Capri rival for the sake of Kramer company lore.

Dynamite’s first Mid-engine Convertible is sure to make a statement. The MC-01 is powered by a lightweight aluminum V6 through a 4 speed manual gearbox. With a price of $13,650 (at 30% markup. $10,500 at 0%), it’s not exactly cheap, but fun isn’t free.

My wildcard entry for CSR-49. Figured I’d at least do something, and I got it stuck in my head to do a mid-engine build. So, here’s a mid-engine car that isn’t really good, but I just had to do it.

How can you squeeze a such small amount of horsepower from such a big engine?

same way ford did with the Mk.2 Mustang

I know… And I’m still wondering how it is possible.

Torque-focused engine.

Huge low end torque means good low end power. Nothing wrong. It is necessary for some applications.

But torque focused engine means nothing truly different from power focused engine. Torque by itself is nothing usable.

There was an interesting video made by killrob explaining this matter very well. It should be on the Automation game channel
