Omega Presents
The Galaxy, Fleet Edition
What is Fleet?
In 1996 Omega began funding an in house division specifically to address fleet sales. While Omega has provided quality vehicles with fleet options for decades, it was felt that rather than simply kitting out cars with commercial grade equipment and interiors, Fleet Division would take a more active approach.
Given free reign, Fleet Division designed a series of engines, transmissions and high quality running gear, all aimed at lowered cost per kilometer, improving in service hours through improved reliability, and improved safety through strengthened chassis, improved restraint systems and all weather controlability.
Each design is subjected to Million Mile Testing, at our proving grounds in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia.
This test heavily focuses on the heavy pressures of city driving, with much emphasis on stop and go, as well as severe broken pavement service, and long idling hours. There is even an extreme temperatures test set, where vehicles are punished in simulated weather as hot as 50 C and as cold as -40 C.
Fleet’s engine design is a modular set up. All engines use an identical bore/stroke ratio, optimizing heat transfer and providing excellent low down torque (Where it’s needed for city service). To that end different cylinder counts and thus displacement and power variants are available in I4, I5, and I6 for city service vehicles, and V8, V10, V12 for highway, heavy duty, or luxury service vehicles. All engines are subjected to twice the industry standard of testing, before they even make it off the bench and into the vehicles they will serve, where they are then tested under normal Million Mile standards, but in service.
Another innovation (which has actually filtered back to Omega’s regular vehicles, was the development of computer control systems for Traction Control and Stability Management (w/ Roll Over Mitigation). On our mainline vehicles these are known as Trac-Assist and SMROM. These provide excellent all weather drivability, and an extra margin of safety in emergency maneuvers.
After all testing is complete, and the vehicles have passed, they are sent out into the world and asked to perform a week of normal duty in active service, in whichever role they have been designed for.
All this testing tells us what goes wrong, and when, and lets us plan out a service schedule to meet your needs, with no surprises. It allows us to set service intervals of 10,000 kilometers, and we offer a bumper to bumper 200,000 kilometer warranty on every vehicle. If you choose to sign up with with our Fleet Service Package, we will provide full mechanical support for your entire fleet, as contractors in your own service centers, and so long as our program is followed, under this package vehicles have their limited warranties extended to 1,000,000 kilometers. (bumper to bumper remains at 200,000)
The actual entry: (This vehicle was submitted for reviewing as the entry, others on this post are lore/supporting vehicles)
For your Jumbo Taxi service needs, Omega offers its all new Galaxy Fleet.
Powered by a very efficient 2.5L inline six cylinder engine, making 130 horsepower while running on 91 Ron. A Five speed transmission is offered that puts down power efficiently and reliably.
Omega believes in passenger safety above all else, to that end we’ve done away with bench seating. That’s right, this van is an 8 passenger but in 4 sets of Captain’s Chairs. We found, in real world testing, that this encouraged passengers to buckle up, despite being in cabs, and provided an extra level of comfort, as well as easier entry and egress by way of a central row, rather than squeezing around bulky bench seats. The centre row also becomes extra storage for backpacks and briefcases once everyone is settled in. These seats are designed to quick release easily by just one person, in cases where more cargo space is desirable (Airport shuttle, Mail/Cargo runs, conversion for Wheelchair service).
Wait how did we fit four rows in like that? This van is Front Wheel Drive. In Combination with the well designed Multi-Link rear suspension this allows for a very low floor that is flat all the way to the rear of the vehicle. This gives a load floor of just 21 inches at the rear, and a step in height of just 15 inches at the passenger entry doors. Stepping up from the curb is a breeze.
A sophisticated but heavily strengthened suspension is on tap in the form of thick double wishbones at the front and a strengthened multi-link setup at the rear. Spring are progressive rate, which Fleet Division found was more reliable, long lasting and significantly less expensive to replace than air ride. The springs become stiffer as more weight is introduced (be it from cornering or out right load factor) maintaining handling characteristics as well as ride comfort.
Fuel Economy is excellent at 9.13 L /100 km, which places it in the 1000-1500 kg category (compact to midsize), which Omega feels is truly excellent considering the van’s 1800+ kilo weight and buttery smooth 6 cylinder power plant. Emission are low for this class of vehicle and while outright acceleration is average for this size class , 168 lb ft of torque is available (150 of it from 1,200 to 4,000 rpm) making city driving very good. The irrelevant top speed is 170 kph. And while the exhaust mutes the engine very well, if maintained hard acceleration is required, it does make quite a good noise. ¬.¬
At $17,500 per vehicle, the tender is for $21,000,000. That is 1088 vans to replace the entire fleet of current vans. as well as 112 stand by units to cover for those out of service due to accident, mechanical servicing, etc.
