The Car Shopping Round (Round 64): Tears in Heaven

@TR8R Just wanted to know if everything is ok, I was hoping to see some reviews today (Sunday). Just remember the 72 hour rule stated in the original post. :slight_smile:

Culling time

@conan

The first car he spots in Autotrader is the BKOO St Louis 360. The photo of the car makes him wonderā€¦.ā€Could this be it?ā€ He adds it to the list of cars to visit in person.

In the flesh, the BKOO St Louis 360 has the look of a well sculptured piece of automotive artā€¦.until you look at it straight on whereby it looks rather mean and angry. The shivers ran down his spine.

The interior is luxurious and comfortable. To the amusement of the seller, he climbs in the boot and asks for the car to be started and revved. With the engine revving he closed the boot and was a little dismayed at the noise level drop. Not quite what he was expecting.

The test drive went well and the car was easy to drive ā€¦.but the noise from the back, or lack of, was disappointingā€¦.maybe the luxury interior was too much.

@Madrias

The next car was the Sinistra Savage and, from the advert, it looked aggresive. It didnā€™t ā€œring any bellsā€ but he thought it would be worth a look anyway.

The car looked pretty classy, once he moved away from the gaudy front then he opened the doors.

HOLY CRAP!! Hadnā€™t Sinistra heard of seat springs or have they just collapsed through age? He tried sitting in it but it was far too uncomfortable.

Out of curiosity he asked for the car to be started up. Right sort of noise but in the wrong car.

He decided to forego the test drive and carried on.

@HighOctaneLove

Next up was the Bogliq Ambassadorā€¦or, he thought, a nonBogliq-blue Bogliq!
The front of the car looked years ahead of time and, in his mind, more akin to a muscle car.

The rest of the car looked a lot classier but, in itself, wasnā€™t menacing.

The premium interior felt comfortable. The exhaust sound was loud. Not as loud as the Sinistra but loud enough.

It seemed bad manners not to take it for a test drive and he found it an easy and smooth ride.

Unfortunately the front end just didnā€™t have what he expected. Disappointedly he left the seller and continued his search.

@TheElt

Next on the list was the BM Screamer. Another good looking car without exuding any great feelings of menace but there is something about it.

Another premium interior give a comfortable feeling as he tried different seats. The engine was loud and very audible from the boot. He ponders that someone is going to call the local psych ward with him closing himself in car boots.

The test drive went well but the ā€œmenaceā€ factor was still hindering him. He adds it to the list of cars he will consider mainly because the car looked like it was frowning, due to the extended bonnet and the sad mouthed grill.

@LinkLuke

This looks very promising. The advert for the LLA Infiltrator showed an angry and savage looking car. Reading through the advert he noticed it only had 4 seats but he knows, from his notes, that the car had 5 seats in it. He flicked the page.

@abg7

Next on the list was the Fleet Industries Landship. This was a big classy looking car but failed to promote any sort of feeling. He classed this car more in line with an executive car, with a more slightly stately look.

The seats were very comfortable and from the inside this could be the car. But from the outside it definitely wasnā€™t. He started the car up and the sound coming from the exhaust was a little underwhelming.

The seller mentioned that it was easy to drive but the looks stopped him taking it out and he moved on.

@koolkei

When he looked at the Chapel he thought it had was more dementedly happy than demonically vicious. Itā€™s like they used Barney for Jurassic Park he thought! But as he looked longer it reminded him more of those creepy clowns, which unnerved him slightly.

The creepy clown car stared at him as he walked up the driveway and he didnā€™t want to be here. The seller opened the car up and he had a look inside. 4 comfortable looking seats.

He apologised for time-wasting but explained that he needed a car with 5 seats. This was another car, similar to the Infiltrator, that had so much going for it but not where it mattered.

@phale

The next car to be seen was the Penrose Customs Imperator. The looks were very understated whilst also having an air of importance. Had it been black then heā€™d have assumed that a crime lord had been a previous owner.

The car itself was the most comfortable car heā€™d seen but the looks were more ā€œexecutiveā€, as was the Landship. The sound from the exhaust was very loud, not as spectacular as the Sinistra, but still impressive.

The test drive went very well but, as with a lot of cars, it didnā€™t have the right look. He thanked the seller and carried on his search.

@nerd

The advert for the Rado L2 showed a rather bland car. It looked more like a sales rep car than something that wanted to kill him.

He decided to pass on this car hoping that heā€™d find something more suitable.

@LordLetto
lordletto
The next car he found was the Serpente. It was a car with ā€œinterestingā€ looks. The fact that the indicators were larger than the teeny tiny headlights amused him greatly.

He was greeted with another nice and comfortable interior. The engine and exhaust sounds were very muted.

He looked at the front of the car, again, realised that it was the quirkiness that got him to look at the car and nothing else.

@thecarlover

The last car on his list was the General Atomic Enfer and it looked like it wanted to cause trouble.

Inside he found 6 incredibly comfortable seats, more than he thought were required, but 6 couldnā€™t be classed as ā€œtoo manyā€. The sound from the exhaust wasnā€™t what he was expecting, or hoping for, especially from the boot.

The test drive went well and so he decided to put this on the maybe list.

He went home to look at his options.

But, But RR With -15 Exhaust!
Also, I may have misinterpreted " In the boot (trunk) of a very large vehicle. Itā€™s VERY NOISY!!!", Was thinking Lotā€™s of Noise, such as a engine was coming from there as in RR, Not that you were placed in there & it was loud.

Maybe I needed to Remove a Muffler & open it up more to make it louder:

Also, Headlight/Indicators was a Derp, Just placed them & Didnā€™t look/consider Size.

Results timeā€¦

He hoped that one of the 3 cars he shortlisted would be the oneā€¦ā€¦

3rd @thecarlover
The Enfer was an angry looking car, angry enough to start a fight in an empty room. He returned to look at the car and drive it out again. As he was driving, this time, he looked around the interior to see if anything ā€œclickedā€ with him. There was nothing familiar. And the noise level didnā€™t do it for him.

2nd @conan
Walking towards the St Louis he still thought it was a mean and angry car. But this anger was less visible than the Enfer. It was moreā€¦ā€¦seething. The luxury factor still bothered him but he decided to take it out one final time. Every thing was going well and heā€™d decided that the St Louis was obviously not the car he was looking for. It had the looks but there was no feeling of trepidation as he droveā€¦.and again, the noise level wasnā€™t there.

Winner - @TheElt
This left the BM Screamerā€¦.it wasnā€™t the meanest looking, the loudest or the scariest but it had enough of everything. Was this really the car of his night terrors? He hoped so.

He handed over the cheque and drove the car away.

Epilogue

He drove the car up into the hills, parked and got out. Taking the large petrol can from the boot he doused the car with fuel and threw a match in the open window.

He retreated to a safe distance and muses that he should have brought marshmallows. The fire blazes, quickly engulfing the car. Heā€™s sure that he can hear screams coming from the car.

The car explodes, making him shield his eyes. The explosion was enough for him to feel it in his chest.

He lowers his hands from his face and knocks something that takes his breath away as a searing pain erupts in his chest.

He looks down. A half cry, half laugh leaks out from between his lips.

Protruding from out of his chest is a wing mirror, a wing mirror from a 1956 BM Screamer.

He coughs which sends another searing pain rupturing through his chest.

A frothy metallic taste starts to fill his mouth. It tastes of blood, his blood.

He collapses to the floor, gazing up at the flame tinged sky while listening to the crackle and pops of the fire.

The smell of blood, smoke and burning rubber fill his nose as he blinksā€¦.onceā€¦twiceā€¦ā€¦

Well done TheElt - itā€™s been a long time coming but he has finally won a round!

And I love your epilogue in which you had the client be hoist by his own petardā€¦ What a way to go!

Surprised I won at all, cheers for the round!

Sadly Iā€™m gonna be a bit too busy to take on hosting, so Iā€™ll have to pass it onto the next person down, @conan

CSR54: Guardian Readerā€™s Motors.

This round still use the Kee engine.

The yearā€™s 1985. The cold war is still raging on. Timo have been a professor of political science at some university in London for 9 years. And while he doesnā€™t show his profession to his neighbour, the fact that his daily commuter is a 1974 Fiat 126 that always park on the street in front of his flat branded him as a goddamn communist. His vaguely Easten European looks doesnā€™t help the case either. The fact is, while he obviously support the case for socialist movement. His political ideology has nothing to do with his choice of wheels. Why shouldnā€™t a man be able to operate simply a basic, practical and affordable automobile?

Then, on a very cold and miserable monday morning. The Fiat cough itā€™s last. That car finally gave up itā€™s ghost on the way to university, leaving Timo stranded on the street of London. It was then that Timo decided that he needed a new ride. The car he bought brand new after he graduated his doctorate degree has traveled nearly 140,000 miles. Quite impressive for any 1970ā€™s machinery, let alone one thatā€™s this cheap.

Now. Timo is not living in poverty, despite his choice of automobile telling otherwise. He came from a wealthy family and obviously couldā€™ve had a better car. But Timo has never been one for Bourgeoisie. Why exactly should he splurge on a more luxury car, when the old Fiat could do the same job? And while his neighbourā€™s Rover 2200 or Ford Cortina was long gone after 3-4 years, the Fiat made it far longer than that.

So, Timo went to a shop and bought a copy of a renown motoring magazine which on the cover showed a cast of the cheapest cars available in Britain today (1985).

Hereā€™s the catch. Timo do like his car. After all, he had kept a flaky Fiat on the road for so many miles. And he know a few things about them. A shoddily built crap will NOT do. Going the cheapest route wonā€™t mean heā€™ll accept the car. And obviously, he noted that thereā€™s been a lot of improvement in automotive industry since the Fiat rolled off itā€™s assembly line.

Heā€™s very much delighted that the magazine he bought compared the cars with the Fiat 126. And then assigned the points in performance, fuel efficiency, handling/stability, comfort, finish and durability. With the car matching the Fiat getting 0 and reaching the standard of a very standard rep car of the day, a 1.6 Cavalier, getting 10. And while the magazine stated that these points arenā€™t to compare the cars directly. Of course Timo is going to base his choice from this.

And then of course, Timo will try the cars out himself at the dealership. And then decided his workhorse for the next how many years it would take to break it.

A few things of note. Timo is a near 40 years old bachelor living alone in a London flat. He parked on the street and usually doesnā€™t have to carry anything more than a few kilo of papers but he wouldnā€™t mind extra space for that occasional uses. Timo will not make prejudice about carā€™s origin as long as itā€™s a good one.)

Rules

  • Year: 1985
  • Price: $7,000 at 0% markup.
  • Engine PU/ET: 20/35
  • Car PU/ET: 70/30
  • Safety: 25
  • Must post an advert (just the car full name is required, no price needed).

Tips.

  • If itā€™s not in the rule, itā€™s not required.
  • This is a highly subjective round and quite LORE HEAVY. Min/maxing the car will simply not do.
  • That means you can send in a car using whatever octane you want. 92 98 80 91 or 95. Itā€™ll be commented accordingly. (No recommendation! Only the 98 is penalized somewhat).
  • You can give the car a cat although itā€™s very much not required.
  • Be sensible, be VERY sensible. Timo is an extremely sensible guy.
  • But if one decided to do a Citroen 2CV. Eh why not. He might like it?
  • Stats are important, but not THAT important. As I said, this is a very subjective round. Do not go for absolute number (this includes reliability and other stuff, all stats basically).

Deadline for entries is 24th October @ 17:00 GMT.

UK fuel in 1985 was leaded. Unleaded appeared in 1986 and was rated at 95 Ron.

Hm. So should I fix it so that 95 is recommended or use proper leaded fuel then? If the latter itā€™ll probably be regular 92 as a 1 star fuel.

I guess Iā€™ll allow all of them.

Another 80s econobox round, but with a very tight budgetā€¦ I wonder where I have seen this before?

Is a car from 1984 acceptable? Itā€™s sold new in 1985 after all.

I have one lore car suitable for this. And itā€™s notā€¦ very good.

:joy:

As long as itā€™s sold in 1985 itā€™s alright. :slight_smile:

Ahhā€¦ I have an LLA Bandit that will work for this. But, will it be the 1600, 1400 or 1200ā€¦

do you mean 24th or 22ndā€¦

It was going to be 22nd. But I changed itā€¦ Fixed now.

A British Hero Returns - Introducingā€¦ The LLA Bandit 1200 Si

The Engine

After 3 years of development the LLA engineers are proud to release the LLA b1200 Injection. A small 1.2L Iron Block inline 3 that uses a single overhead cam driving 6 valves and a single point injection system that casts out any barbaric carburetors. Furthermore with forged internals the b1200 Injection can reach 6000 RPM reliably whilst producing an adequate 51.3 Hp.

The Gearbox

Paired to the b1200 Injection is a manual 4 speed gearbox. It may not be innovative but due to the cars small dimensions will propel the car to 92 Mph. This also means the car has great fuel efficiency, 30.1 Mpg(UK) to be exact.

The Interior

The Bandit is meant to be a city car, which also means sitting in traffic and short journeys. This is why the Bandit has been designed to be comfortable, but in order to keep the car available to all, the construction of the interior has been designed with one simple matter in mind: The Bandit is meant to be Adequate not fancy. But this doesnā€™t been the car isnā€™t driver focused. This is why LLA engineers have fitted power steering to the Si model, making the Bandit easy to manhandle around city streets.

The Summary

Finally, in summary, the LLA Bandit is designed to be a city car for all. It offers simple yet expansive features that other cars in itā€™s price range do not offer. This makes the LLA Bandit perfect for those looking for a cheap runabout that is reliable and efficient that isnā€™t all that lack on features.

Si models go for around $6600 each.

Prices vary depending on dealer. Totally non rip-off finance is available but the car is owned by LLA Finance, not YOU. Finally other colours such as poo brown or not so popping grey are available.

Designed as an inexpensive FWD sedan, the Dynamite LC-4 has quite a decent features list for the price-point. Built to the demands of the California Emissions Requirements, the LC-4 wears a catalytic converter proudly, while still making a proud 60 horsepower from a 1.4 liter inline 4 under the hood. Sure, other cars use that leaded crap, but when the smog bans roll in and leaded gas disappears, the LC-4 will still be driving around.
