The Car Shopping Round (Round 64): Tears in Heaven

And it is me again! I entered the Estrada Karhma for those who do not know me. Anyway, who wants a car that is almost as fast as an Aventador but cheaper than a base Camaro and has over 1000l of boot space. We at Cacent think that Kai had a car like this in mind, it is called the ME and we have supplied 2 test cars for Kai, the top of the line MERs and the bottom of the line ME30. The MERs has a 6.5l NA V8 pushing nearly 700 bhp while the ME30 has a 3.0l turbo inline 4 pushing over 510 bhp, both can go from 0-62 in under 6 seconds and can do over 200 mph. The car has a premium interior and top of the line infotainment systems for daily driving ease and enjoyment. A 6 speed manual gearbox (MERs only) allows you to slip it into a higher gear for cruising or to get it down to the lowest gear the engine will allow for some high speed overtaking or general fun.

OK, so here is my officially officialington entry: the JHW Cypher

An economy car that has supercar looks, sportscar handling, and all with 4 seats and a great ICE setup.

it has 220+ bhp, does 0-100kph in under 6 seconds and goes on to 160+mph.

oh, and did i mention it does all that whilst acheiving 40+mpg???

it’s $30k. that’s it. get it ASAP

So I guess I’m not the only one who discovered this body is way more op as far as top speed goes. lol. Enjoy it while we can, I expect people to ban it soon.

It’s very aerodynamic, much like the VW XL-1 is all. The downside is the limited size of the engine bay and its large size. Also, while the version with the wheel covers is more aerodynamic, it limits the size of the rear wheels to about 245 without clipping through. Depending how things go, I might raise the Cd value a bit, but expect it to remain substantially lower than the McLaren and Crown Vic bodies. It’s a purely aerodynamic design.

actually, my other saloon was much better in some aspects, but i was able to eek out much more reasonable emmisions and slightly better MPG figures for the performance

@thecarlover it’s a great piece of work, and this one is certainly better for the task than my last effort. has your back recovered from the Vigilante yet???

Speaking of which, why the hell is the Crown Vic body so aerodynamic? Didn’t the real thing have a Cd of 0.33 or something? The minivan body also has a way too low Cd.

It s only unfair if it s untrue
Sides the US started it

No idea, even the McLaren body shouldn’t be so aerodynamic. The Lamborghini MurciĂ©lago is actually more aerodynamic, but I wasn’t going to go from 0.33 to 0.17, so it’s just as 0.22 or something like that. Lower than I initially planned, but it just couldn’t compare with the standard supercar bodies. The McLaren MP4-12C is really at 0.35. I figure the supercars have such a low Cd due to the downforce they generate, and that’s negated in the game unless aero features are tuned for it.

The van is a fairly slippery shape, but it’s still too low, and no idea on the Crown Vic.

I found many bodies that have strange cds. Sometimes it fells quite randome.

^^THIS. And the mclaren short body, which has the exact same shape, but minor frontal area for some reason it has a higher Cd.

That’s because we all use different approaches to find the Cd of a body, thecarlover seems to use some sense based in real life Cd values, I use a mix of hpwizard aerodynamics and daffy’s tool to calculate the Cd of a car minus the cooling, and VMO uses some flow software.

@phale That’s the real life Cd, you need to take into account the drag caused by cooling and in some cases downforce.

I used to use the real Cd values (and I think some of my earlier bodies still have it) before learning that I should have it lower because the basic shells don’t have any grills or anything of the sort.

Yes, this is where Daffy’s comes in. It calculates body CD based in how much ventilation is required based on power and whether it has forced induction.

@strop this challenge was a total doozey as i really had to be careful with what i did. i showed 4 design studies, but i think i made 30 or so revisions to all of them before settling on the final one. usually i’ll just put one together and tune it over 30mins-1 hour or so, but this has been much much longer

@Strop, can you tell us what the running costs for Mephisto are?

You should ask @asdren first, the resemblance is striking  It’s probably the headlight array.

@phale in excess of 5k. Could be closer to 7. When I first built it the costs were like 12k lol but that’s because I had everything on +15. A lot of that is insurance, the premiums are exorbitant. Note for Kai this matters less as GG fixes the car, but if it’s not a GG car

As I said I expect a reasonable top flight car to have running costs of 5-7k.

Would just under $10K be acceptable?

If the amount of car it is matches, then sure.

Better be ridiculous fast and ridiculously sexy, though :stuck_out_tongue:

I actually did consider submitting a hypercar, but no matter what I tried to make it as sexy as possible, I was afraid GG would refuse to pay for it, and also could not come up with an accurate expected price or annual production total for it in time, so I PMed you a replacement for Toothless instead out of necessity. :disappointed_relieved:

Edit: There is one week before the deadline, but the real deal breaker was the possibility, however slight, that GG would not subsidize it on looks alone, even though, after hours of deliberation, I projected annual sales of between 20 and 100 examples at $160-225k apiece. I also suspected it would not be fast enough around the Green Hell even after its performance had been optimized as much as possible.

You do realise that the deadline isn’t for another week right?

For everybody else too: the whole point of this is not to rush. Don’t be surprised if you can’t make your mind up about the design and go through half a dozen ideas or more. Due to beta testing I can’t even look at the entries until Monday anyway.
