This week the bad comes from one of my favourite car companies and might be slightly controversial with some of you as apparently there’s even a fansite for this car. And its the Aston Martin Lagonda. Some people would say this could have been included in the ugly but in my opinion its a little too dull to be ugly although its certainly not pretty either. Its… well it’s odd. On paper everything about this car should have been pretty good. It was a performance luxury saloon with a 5.3L V8 engine like the BMW M5 of its day really but it wasn’t very good at all.
It broke down a lot. There were plenty of gadgets in it but none of them ever worked. It was certainly luxurious for the 1970s but the dashboard looked a bit botch job. And the pedals in a lot of the versions I’ve seen seem to have gaffer tape down by the pedals around the blue carpet. Which is not a good look. The other thing is if you want a luxurious car you want it to look elegant and sophisticated. The Lagonda was neither. It looked more like an american muscle car from the outside, which is fine if it is an american muscle car. They are supposed to look brutish and mean but a luxury saloon? Worst of all Aston Martin really on this occasion didn’t appear to know what they were doing at all and seemed to be trying to sell to a market that didn’t exist because they produced an estate version. Now who wants to buy a luxury estate? It’s been tried several times and it doesn’t work. And if you still don’t agree with me perhaps you will when you see the estate in question because they back appears to have been welded on with cellotape.
